I've been in love with the Billy Bragg and Wilco version of this for years and years. I never went looking to hear anyone else sing and play it. Tonight, this autoplayed from the suggestions here on YT while I was busy. it stopped me in my tracks. It's perfect. I love her singing this, and I am a little sad that his has existed for so many years and I just learned of it tonight.
i was going to see laura in glasgow & literally bumped into her in the street - laura ! i love you i said - well its not everyday you bump into your favourite singer !
She's playing at the Hopewell theater next week, a small funky theater near my town that books obscure acts, lecturers, and art movies. Came to UA-cam to check her out. I'm impressed and I'm going to go to the show next week.
I first heard this song on a bootleg cassette tape I bough off of a guy on Cable Beach, Nassau, Bahamas- '90-'91 Rev. FC Barnes and his singers. They were great.
If I were to have a funeral service, which I won't . . . what's the point? But if I did, I would take pleasure if this song were sung by pretty and sweet Laura. Such a wonderful voice and talent. I will never tire listening to this song. Forgive me, Loie, but I see Dan carefully tending his beloved rose garden for you. Just something in my heart and soul I respectfully share as well as my undying respect and love for you.
Is Laura related to great Aussie singer Lana Cantrell who migrated to the US at the peak of her career in the late 60s.Lana was awarded and Order of Australia. I see a likeness.
didn't know Wilco's cover (now I do thaks to youtube), I like them playing it 'cause this is a great song, but I like Laura's cover much more, maybe cause it was included in such a wondeful record.
I suppose this is a matter of taste, but I found the Gibb/Skaggs version inappropriately upbeat for the subject matter and far prefer Laura's interpretation, although I agree this particular performance is off. A bad day at the office. I'd suggest listening to her studio version.
Absolutely amazing.

Her interpretation is spot on. The beat, rhythm, variation, etc, perfect.

Laura Cantrell reminds me of Emmylou Harris and Nancy Griffith: they have a unique, natural style all of their own.

Is Laura Cantrell related to Suzy Cantrell?

WORST, Absolutely of this song - what a shame its posted as there so many GOOD ones on youtube!
You're nuts
The song is beautiful, especially the mandolin and backgrounds, but she is falling flat vocally an awful lot in this song.
Much older than Woody Guthrie, actually.

Guitar sounded flat and L
