Jack Nicholson is such a great actor!
When he was in the middle of a shooting, he said after one scene, "Let's do this scene again." The director was amazed and said "Okay, why not".
Jack wanted to play the scene over and over again and the director finally asked why "it was perfect the first time"! Jack smiled and said "I love to act"!
No wonder he has 3 Oscars!
That's always what makes the difference. Workers who genuinely love what they do.

This movie really shows the range of Jack Nickolson. From being a crazy maniac to his comedic timing in the line "I don't want to get my feet in the gutter".
@@One.Zero.One101 Never really thought of him as a comedian for some reason...but looking back pretty much every role he did was darkly funny. And deeply funny, in a way Even One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest.
I started watching this channel a bunch and my wife asked if it was because I was missing my 20 yr old daughter. We moved from west coast to east coast and she stayed in California. I realized how much I missed watching movies with her and seeing her reactions to films I loved since she was such a girly girl who usually only watched rom coms. She just moved here yesterday so I can’t wait to show her some of the films that I have watched you react to. This channel was weirdly helpful to me when I was missing her. Thank you for being so genuine

My daughter is Gen Z and she is a wonderful human being, but she's not really into watching movies. Being a lifelong cinephile, that hurts me a little. And we all know that you can't share movies with your wife, because she'll fall asleep. 😆
This post felt like a continuation of "As Good as it gets". We all yearn for something to give us joy. And Cassie seems to do that for both of us. Thank you for expressing the joy this channel gives you. I watch movies by myself and very few people I know watch them with me. ----- It's channels like this that create a community for me to sit with a friend and watch a movie and feel joy, surprise, excitement, intrigue. People like michael and Cassie brighten my week.

To me, As Good As It Gets is one of the best films of the 90’s. The leads all give career topping performances. The writing is fantastic. The dog is cute as hell. Jack Nicholson sings “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life”

I didn't get the Life of Brian connection until like six years after this came out. Lol. Then it made sense.
Jack Nicholson redeemed himself with this movie. I hated every other movie I saw hi in till this one. Of course I was a child when The Shining came out that left a lasting impression. It still amazes me what they let a child watch in those days. haha. And they wonder why I was afraid of my own shadow. lol

"A great movie is never too long, a bad movie is never too short." - Roger Ebert. Getting that feeling where you just wanna keep following the characters is characteristic of the best storytelling. Amazing film.

@@rebo2610 Yep. I know exactly what you mean. Nothing like a good novel where half way through it you realize how much you love it. And so you start kinda rationing it out so you can make it last. And then, when you get close to the end, you read it super slow.
The dog imitating Jack is hands down adorable. Makes me grin like an idiot every time. Same with Kinnear's "Well here I am!!!"
Jack really blows away his typical stereotypes with this movie. I can't watch it without tearing up. He was amazing in his transformation. Additionally as someone with mental health issues, the attention he brought to the forefront with his acting, shows people with mental issues are or can become fanstastic people. We don't get to choose who we are sometimes, but we can always try to improve.
I love this movie. Thank you, Cassie, for not just watching the trending, blockbuster movies, but for reacting to some absolutely wonderful films that have begun to be forgotten. Both Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt won Academy Awards for their roles in this film. Nicholson gets most of the attention, but I think Hunt is perfection here. She’s just brilliant.
Helen Hunt does an admirable job. She's so believable! You know all the feelings going through her. Well deserved award.
Hunt is spot on in this, they all are. Big stars, all three, but you forget who they are when their characters are so believable. The actors, the script, the cinematography, the music...they were all as good as it gets.
This was a big hit at the time.
Feel like every single character got some incredible lines to work with. Helen Hunt's character seems the most real to me.
How could this film be forgotten if they two of the leading actors have won Awards for their roles?
The writing and acting (especially the dogs that played Verdell) in this was literally as good as it gets. I remember leaving the theater thinking "What the hell did I just watch and why did I love it so much?!" This is one that gets better each time you watch it. The look down at his foot on the sidewalk at the end is so great.
I saw it in the theater as well and that pretty well sums up my reaction.
This film holds such special meaning to me. When I graduated Middle School back in 2008 my big sister came down on vacation from Michigan to Tennessee to stay with my father and me. We had this movie on VHS copy and she told me that I just had to see it. And we stayed up throughout the night watching it. My sister passed away in 2019..This reaction made my heart full.

Greg Kinnear is unbelievably awesome here! He had annoyed me, and plenty of others, until this movie came out. His performance here brings tears to my eyes every single time I watch it and most of the time if I even think about it. Such a great film. Great reaction!
I know, he is so good and it's a shame he didn't get the Oscar for supporting role! I honestly found his character more interesting then Jack's.
This movie is criminally underrated. EVERYBODY in this film (including the dog) give the highest levels of performance. Any other way and it doesn’t work. Very happy you saw this

One of my favorite, touching scenes is when Carol (Helen) is coming home and sees the medical license plate and panics and runs into the house worried about her son and finds a doctor there and realizes he’s really going to help her son !!!
The whole scene with Harold Ramis as the doctor is perfect. Such a simple thing that made such a big difference in the life of that family.

Hi Cassie, I highly recommend Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest (1975) He gives a charismatic, Oscar winning performance in it as a prison convict who fakes insanity to get onto a psychiatric ward. And not only meets an array of characters, but encounters a strict nurse. It's another 'must react to' movie.
Don't forget Easy Rider and Terms of Endearment....

Louise Fletcher plays one of the greatest screen villains in movie history.
For me, the greatest moment in the movie is when Helen Hunt is silent after Jack says her son is going to die. The expression on her face is extraordinary.

This is a prime example of those films, where you just fall in love with the characters and all their flaws of which there are plenty.
Helen Hunt won an Oscar for this, well deserved. The whole cast breaks your heart, so like the rest of us-searching for love in a crazy world. Great reaction, as usual.

I've never seen Jack Nicholson put in a bad performance. No matter what the movie genre, he is always top tier. He can play villain, he can play flawed, he can play vulnerable, he can play comedy, he can play romance, the list goes on. You absolutely have to watch more Jack Nicholson movies. Even if he plays only a minor role, he steals the scene with his adlib & improv.
"About Schmidt", and "Something's Gotta Give" are two other heartwarming Jack Nicholson films from the early 2000's that fit in with "As Good as It Gets".
Better movies, in fact. Also: Terms Of Endearment That movie has Cassie written all over it. (And much better than this movie. same director/writer). But definitely both the movies you mentioned are well worth a watch on this channel for sure.
I love this movie. Only someone with a beautiful soul like Carol can bring out the deeply hidden good soul in Melvin. Although misguided, Melvin thinks that Carol can help heal Simon. Why couldn't she? She's the "greatest woman alive". He's right about her helping Simon, just not in the way he was thinking. It's wonderful how the trio start to heal each other.
Oh that's interesting. I never thought of it that way, as far as the healing. I thought he was just trying to stay close to the dog. lol.
This movie has been one of my favourites since it came out in 97. The phrase, "good times, noodle salad" has become one of the phrases of my life. Represents those moments of happiness. If I make an online post after having one of those nights ill use that phrase.

One of my all time favorite movies! It never gets old. That Nicholson can make you feel repulsed, perplexed, and charmed in such a short time is a testament to his skill. All of these characters were played by the perfect people, and I love each of them! ❤️❤️❤️

@@serdarLegend I haven't seen her reaction to The Shining but it doesn't surprise me really. I play a game with friends on facebook where I give them a clue about a movie and they guess the movie and only rarely do I come up with one no one has seen. Cassie has reacted to hundreds of movies and it's virtually impossible for her not to have seen any of them. How can someone grow up and not see Saving Private Ryan or Forest Gump or Dances With Wolves? Unless they lived in a cave. But she's very cute and so is her sister and I like watching them so I'll play along with their little games.

The thing Helen Hunt does with her finger, saying "Good Bye", is directly connected with "The Shining". An inside joke on behalf of Mr. Nicholson.
This cast is one of the best ever gathered in front of one camera! Jack Nicholson may be the finest actor of his generation, perhaps of all time. I have never seen him make a bad movie. He doesn't just play a character; he becomes the character and Jack Nicholson disappears. There is only one other actor I know of who shares this unique quality - Robert Duval. And put Nicholson with Helen Hunt, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Greg Kinnear and it becomes pure magic! Cassie, if you have not watched "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" you are missing the true genius of Jack Nicholson and one of the greatest Oscar-winning performances of all time!

Dr Bettes is played by the late, great Harold Ramis writer and star of Ghostbusters, writer director of Groundhog Day and many other classic comedies.
You're right, the two customers sitting together at the restaurant in the beginning are played by Peter Jacobson and Lisa Edelstein, who were both main cast members in the show House M.D. Also, two of the robbers are played by Skeet Ulrich and Jamie Kennedy, who both starred in Scream. The doctor hired by Melvin is played by none other than the late Harold Ramis who is known for movies like Stripes, Ghostbusters, Caddyshack, Vacation, and Groundhog Day.
I remember an interview where Jack Nicholson was talking about this movie, and he jokingly commented about the scene where he was crying, and the dog cried in response, saying something like "There I was, blubbering my eyes out, and I get outacted by the damn dog!"
At the end of the movie, they're both surprised when a bakery opens suddenly as they walk past, then they're choosing which loaves to get. Bread is symbolic of life and blessings and provision, and it's given as a gift to newly weds as a house warming gift.
Interesting. I always wondered if there was some significance to the lights turning on suddenly and the whole bakery seeming to appear out of nowhere.
That moment in the psych doc's place where he asks the whole waiting room. "ever wonder if this is as good as it gets?"
I think what really hits with this movie is the fact that instead of showing a hollywood romance, we get three hurt people slowly healing each other. and oddly the romantic chemistry works... which speaks volumes for Helen Hunt and Jack Nicholas and the script writer and director, that they can sell any romance with a character as vile as Melvin. The best part about it is the really mundane and "ordinary" way they ended the movie. this didn't end on riding off into the sunset, or a wedding or a happily ever after. just two people enjoying a moment in a NYC bakery just as it opened its doors in the morning.

One of my favorite movies of all time.
The old guy that says " Maybe he was shoved down a garbage chute" is Bill Murray's brother.
Funny thing is, as a kid, I never saw Jack Nicholson as a bad guy. I guess it's all about perspective. I grew up watching his non bad guy roles like "Chinatown", "Terms of Endearment", "Prizzi's Honor" and "The Witches of Eastwick" due to my mom because she was the one who bought the theater tickets or rented the videos. It was only when I started going on my own to theaters as young man that I saw him in bad guy roles like the Joker in "Batman" or Col. Jessup in "A Few Good Men." So seeing him in this role in "As Good As It Gets" was no surprise to me as this was the Jack Nicholson roles that I grew up being accustomed to.
My ex was as "Pro-Woman" as it gets, and even she cracked up at the reason and accountability line. 😂😂😂 I think its one of the best out of nowhere jabs ever written to be honest.
It is one of the best ever. The film is so quotable though that some "reviews" of it skip that as one of the best lines. It's not just a good mix of true and funny, but it sums up his character without specifically saying it.
and they edited it out. A crime to be sure.

One of the best written movies. For any writer this should be on the gold standard list of screenplays to study. Yes the acting is great, but acting is only as good as the writing. Written and directed by James L Brooks, a familiar name for any fan of The Simpsons.

Would bet NYC has a ton of really interesting characters. Feels like the script was written with the city in mind.
This movie made me both laugh and cry at so many moments. Fantastic acting by every cast member. It was nice to see this again. Cassie was looking for a way to describe the movie. I have one: It's one of the most human movies I've ever seen.
This movie is as good as it gets and reminds me of *Little Miss Sunshine* (2006). Cannot wait to see the reaction.

I wouldn't normally watch these types of movies when I was a kid, but I just accidentally caught it on cable and watched it for Jack Nickolson, and I ended up really loving it. When I got older I finally understood why I loved this movie. The characters, the dialogue, the acting are all top notch.
Nicholson and Hunt both won best acting Oscars for their performances and deservedly so. Titanic catered to the masses and dominated the Academy Awards that year but this movie is light years better because it's a real portrayal of real people and the struggles most of us encounter. I could watch this movie weekly and still find something profound in the dialogue I missed previously. What a brilliant script !!
Robert Duvall was favored to win that year and he should have. Either him, or Samuel Jackson for Jackie Brown (and he wasn't even nominated). Nicholson - who I love, and he made a terrific speech - was a total upset and a symptom of how lame the Oscars had become. Very funny you think this movie isn't made "for the masses" and is somehow like an art film. This was a completely campaigned for Oscar win for all concerned....and NAKEDLY.

Robert Duvall was favored to win that year, the Jack Nicholson win was a popularity prize (Jack's Hollywood, Duvall isn't), a total upset. I LOVE Jack Nicholson, I love that he has three Oscars, his speech that night was one of the best, but sorry: when a mediocrity like "As Good As It Gets" wins Best Picture, you know movies are going downhill. The Oscar caliber films that year were Boogie Nights, Donnie Brasco (Pacino's performance in this movie dwarfs Nicholson's), The Ice Storm, Lost Highway, The Apostle, Jackie Brown (Samuel Jackson's greatest performance and he wasn't even nominated), etc etc. Hollywood is a company town, dummy, that's a Hollywood movie, I remember it was shock it was even nominated. The Oscars for this movie were CAMPAIGNED for, you dummy, this is EXACTLY the era when the Oscars meant NOTHING! Exactly at this moment in time! The very next year was the whole Shakespeare In Love debacle! If this movie was "as good as it gets" in 1997, then 1997 wasn't very good! This garbage movie of mediocrity made by Hollywood royalty (James Brooks, Nicholson) and is their version of a flyyover country/suburban fantasy of what they think NYC is like, you couldn't find a less authentic NYC movie if you tried. Jack is many things; a New Yorker ain't one of 'em. It's a piece of nothing made for idiots. Not even in the top twenty of Nicholson movies/90s movies....and not even in the top fifty of Best Picture winners/Best Actor winners. "This is an era of cinema...." This is one of my favorite movies! I also really enjoyed "Something's Gotta Give' and "It's Complicated" and hope you get a chance to watch them. The whole cast in both movies does such a great job and they are great romantic comedies. Glad you enjoyed it!

I'm thrilled you finally watched this film. It really is one of the best films. Such a great performance from everyone involved. It really is less romantic in the cliche ways romance is often viewed. There really is something special about this story. I truly cried yet again. Thank you, Cassie!
That’s what’s so great about it. It’s not your typical girl from the wrong side of the tracks meets perfect male model with unbelievably spot on one liners and they live happily ever after. Without getting sexist about it, this is a rom com from the stereotypical male perspective. There’s no fantasy here. Everyone is a flawed, struggling person. The closest person to having it together is a Brussels Griffin named Verdel. This isn’t a rom com off a Hallmark card. It’s much more than that.

I think you should watch the film Terms of Endearment. Nicholson plays a very likable role in that, it was also made by James L. Brooks who made As Good As It Gets, and it's a nice tear jerker.

I've always seen this movie as an amplification of all our lives, the over reactions, saying the wrong thing and not knowing why, the inability to say what's in our hearts. We see ourselves in the exaggerations of Melvin, not the real "us," but the exaggerations we have of our faults and flaws. One of my all-time favorite films!! Such a wonderful cast, right down to the extras- it's a who's who. Did you notice Harold Ramos as Dr Betts? Her mother was played by Shirley Knight, a prolific screen, tv and theater actress (she was in The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya sisterhood, which I highly recommend). Yeardley Smith (plays Jackie) is the voice of Bart Simpson! And Lupe Ontiveros (the housekeeper) has had a wonderful acting career- she played America Ferrera's mother in Real Women Have Curves, she was in Selena with Jennifer Lopez, and the Goonies.
Great movie. Top reaction. Some of those late 90's movies blurred genres in a great way. So good.

I think Jack's performance in this movie is 2nd only to One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. But the movie is complete due to Helen Hunt, Greg Kinnear ( Oscars for Jack & Helen and SAG awards for all 3) plus the magnificent screenplay and direction of James L Brooks.
It's just a great film!
Hands down my favorite performance by Nicholson is in ABOUT SCHMIDT. The fact that he did not get Oscar for that performance makes me suspicious of the whole awards process. During the movie I kept waiting for his trademark eyebrow arch - never happened. He was 100%Schmidt. It is such a beautiful performance and I'm not sure anyone has reviewed it. Kathy Bates' performance alone is worthy of reaction, but Jack's is flawless.

I introduced my late Mom to this film a few years before she passed. The amount of times on visiting she was watching it was countless. So I got her the DVD one Christmas to save her searching all the channels for it. Love the film myself. It's in my top 2/3

If you want to see your boy, Jack Nicholson in a normal kind of role, check out Terms of Endearment. Spoiler Alert. Jack doesn't kill anyone. :-) It won the Best Picture Oscar and Jack won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar.
And it was co-written and directed by the same guy who wrote and directed As Good As It Gets! He’s got good pedigree, that James L Brooks

Its been more that 20 years since I've seen this film. I had forgot 'As Good As It Gets' isn't an upbeat phrase, it means what we've got is as good as its going to get.
As a filmmaker, I really appreciate it when you professed your love for the characters. You are an example of the best audience one could get.

DiCaprio wasn’t even nominated for Titanic.

Ah one of my favorite movies... Watch it in the Cinema back in 1997or 98 with my older sister and it´s always been a big part of my life....
I forgot how much I loved watching this movie. It made it even better watch you watch it, too. The movie is so stirring, you want to share the journey with everyone you can.

Francie and Johnny with Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer is a similarly one of a kind kind film you really would enjoy.

I'm so glad you reacted to this gem. Not many reactors have done this. In fact, I can't recall any reactions until yours. This is one of of my favorites of all time. It's written and acted extraordinarily well. There are numerous actor cameos. Too many to mention and some you probably won't know. This movie came out in 1997 which was one of the greatest Oscar years ever. We got this one, Titanic, Good Will Hunting, L.A Confidential and The Full Monty. As always, your reaction was sweet and genuine.

That’s what an amazing actor he is…everyone knows him (Jack) and he BECOMES whatever character he chooses. So talented.
My earliest views of Jack Nicholson were "The Terror" (1963) and "Little Shop of Horrors" (1960). You won't believe it's the same person in the first film; and his part in the second film is iconic. I think it was "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (1975) that catapulted him to major stardom. He's a unique actor, and a three-time Oscar winner. I think a review of his filmography might be very rewarding.
This is another one of those movies like Scent of a Woman or Rain Man where one of the leads is just so thoroughly unlikable at first even with their circumstances that it's an absolute delight to see them change. With Melvin I think it's the most remarkable; you almost can't imagine the man at the start of the film doing what he eventually does for Simon, for instance.
Burt Reynolds turned down Terms of Endearment which was ultimately given to Jack Nicholson. He won best supporting actor for his role. He makes every movie he's in golden.
One of the all-time bungles from any A-list movie star. James L. Brooks wrote the part of Garrett Breedlove specifically for Reynolds, who winds up doing STROKER ACE the same year instead. The notoriously picky Jack reads the script and is *immediately* like, "Yep, I'll catch them dice! Thanks, Burt". Burt's stardom continued to wane, while Nicholson wins an Oscar and course-corrects into flashy, meaty supporting roles throughout the next decade, becoming an even bigger star than ever. Poor Burt Reynolds probably thought these things are all down to Iuck...
His interactions with Aurora (Shirley MacLaine) was awesone. "I think we need lots of drinks." "To lighten the mood?" "To kill the bug up your ass!" 😮😂
It's sequel The Evening Star brought them back together again. Jack, "there aren't too many shopping days left until Christmas." Which was 13 years later in 1996 which was good just not as good. Bill Paxton RIP was in it too.
What a talented cast! Besides the leads, even the couple at Melvin's table in the beginning went on to co-star together in House.
Thank you for reacting to this movie, hopefully more reactors will too now. This one has always been a favorite of mine. Another really good movie that hasn't seemed to get it's moment in the sun is Stranger Than Fiction (2006), I think you'd really enjoy it.

This film was filled with superb actors, who made you believe completely in the characters they portrayed.
- This was Jack's third Oscar win, and second for Best Actor. Robin Williams won the same year for 'Good Will Hunting', and Robin once cracked on Graham Norton that backstage at the Oscars, Jack said to Robin, "Ya know, Rob-o...Now I've got one for every decade!" Jack won for 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest' (Best Actor, 1975) and 'Terms of Endearment' (Best Supporting Actor, 1984). James L. Brooks also directed Jack in 'Terms of Endearment'.
- Helen Hunt won the Oscar for Best Actress, and she won while still being one of the main leads in the sitcom 'Mad About You', a series she won 4 Emmys for Best Leading Actress in a Comedy. This is hands down one of her best performances in ANYTHING...and she's an actor's actor, truly dedicated to her craft as an artist. I was a huge fan of 'Mad About You' as well...her chemistry with co-star Paul Reiser as a married couple was amazing.
- Greg Kinnear was nominated for Best Supporting Actor, and this was the year AFTER Cuba Gooding, Jr. won his Oscar for 'Jerry Maguire'...and as I said earlier, Greg lost to Robin Williams.
- In the scene where Simon reveals his injuries, the woman is Yearley Smith. James L. Brooks is one of the producers of 'The Simpsons', and Yeardley is the voice of Lisa Simpson.
- Jack's psychiatrist is played by Lawrence Kasdan, who is a screenwriter and director. He co-wrote the screenplays for 'Star Wars - Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back', 'Star Wars - Episode VI - Return of the Jedi', 'Star Wars - Episode VII - The Force Awakens', and wrote 'Raiders of the Lost Ark'. He also wrote and directed films like 'The Big Chill', 'Grand Canyon', 'Silverado', 'Wyatt Earp', 'Body Heat', and 'I Love You To Death'.
- The doctor who makes the housecall at Jack's request for Spencer is the late Harold Ramis, from 'Ghostbusters', and the director of 'Groundhog Day', 'Caddyshack', and 'National Lampoon's Vacation'.

What if this is as good as it gets ?
I remember watching this in a theater, being blown away by how amazing the dialogue was. I never felt it was slow at all. Like you , I just took it all in. I knew it was going to be entertaining because Jack Nicholson is always magnetic on the screen. But the fact that James L Brooks wrote and directed it was the clincher for me. I was only 14, but I was a big fan of his shows, Taxi, Cheers, and of courseThe Simpsons. So I knew I was in for a treat. Great movie. Great reaction.
19:51 Like it or not, this is exactly what he needed. All his friends giving him pity and treating him like delicate glass. Melvin making him angry and insulting him to the point where he wanted to fight and stick up for himself made all the difference AND made Melvin respect him more.

Two of the "models" are from Scream (Skeet Ulrich and Jamie Kennedy), and because this is a James L. Brooks production, Yeardley Smith is in it (the woman visiting him in the hospital in the blue dress at 12:46), that's Lisa Simpson herself.
One of the movies I kept turning to over and over as a teenager. I loved how every character was flawed, but despite that still managed to turn their lives around.

"One flew over the cuckoo's nest'' is a stunning movie with Jack, but a lighter-hearted one with AMAZING female co-stars (Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michele Pfeiffer!!!) which you would really enjoy is ''The Witches of Eastwick''.
Michelle Pfeiffer is also in another movie which 'scratches the same itch' as AGAIG.. "Frankie and Johnny". Al Pacino, as a short order cook, Michelle Pfeiffer as one of several waitresses.
I have seen this movie many, many times but, somehow watching it with you and your reaction made it feel new. I can only imagine how your family feels having you around all the time helping them feel the world this special. This is one of my all time favorite films, my late father used to love it so much and watching it reminds me of him... He had OCD all his life pretty much and was so misunderstood because of it, but he was in reality a caring and loving person, despite the exterior coarseness. He identified so much with Jack Nicholson's character, I'm glad you watched it. No one's perfect in this film, they feel like real people living their lives.
