Your Shoo-Fly Pies look yummy, and your daughter's hand pies look delicious. I love how your son kept looking at the pies at the beginning of the video and how happy he looked when you said he could have some. He's adorable.
Thanks so much
❤
Your videos are such a blessing to so many strangers. But just think of what a blessing it will be to have these videos for your children and grandchildren one day (a LOOOONG time from now) when you're not around. I would love to have videos with instructions from my MawMaw on how she cooked things. ❤
This is REAL. Thanks for including the kids and finger licking and all the real stuff! That’s what it looks like in a kitchen where kids get to be part of things. My kids and grands have fond memories of helping in the kitchen and gives them so much confidence! I love your less edited style Ruth Ann! 🏆
Harrison is so sweet & cute. He can’t wait to get his hands on that pie
Man I LOVE Amish & Mennonite cooking videos. You guys were the first preppers. I learn a lot and the food tastes awesome!! Thank you!
❤
Haha, why make one pie when you can make three?! Love it. So interesting! My mom was not a pie-maker. My Gram never shared her baking secrets. And nobody in the family ever made Shoo-Fly Pie. I never even heard about it until I was much older and out of the house. It has always been a big mystery to me ~ not just the pie, but also how it got its name. Anyway, the kids are great helpers! Thanks so much for sharing your approach. These pies look really tasty. 😋
I was going to say, Harrison needs his own pie cutter but you gave him a job egg washing pies, good job mom. Both my boys are cooks and love baking to.
I’ve haven’t made a ShooFly pie in 40 years.😁 This extra special to watch. Thank you so much for sharing.🕊️
This was my dad's favorite pie. My dad and mom were born and raised Amishm
Your son’s face says it all! I can’t wait to try this. I found you via the Pie collaboration. Thank you for sharing this!
Thank you for being here!!
She has so many amazing videos. I've been binging since I found her!
This is a new idea for me. I have heard of it, but never tasted or made one. Thank you for sharing!!
So , I have been canning and baking and such for years and years. Some of your videos I watch for information, some I simply watch just to watch~ you are such a joy ! FYI I love how you say the word "Now", it's adorable as are you. Blessings to you and your family and thanks for being you!
I love Shoo-Fly pie. My grandmother made them all the time, she only used the molasses, not Karo. She was Pennsylvania Dutch and loved the Chow Chow. Still looking for a good recipe for Chow Chow. My grandmother always used two forks to make the crust. My grandmother said the same never overwork the dough. My grandmother made it is smaller batches. My grandmother has been gone since 1968 and I sure miss her even now. She made great apple butter also. She made Blood sausage and head cheese sausage, but would not eat it.
Kids will be kids-especially when cooking is concerned! I am 75 and love watching your videos. I have learned from your background of wisdom from your up- bringing. I would have loved to have spent time with my mother in the kitchen. She always wanted us to not be under foot when she cooked. Your children are so Blessed to have a patient compassionate mother!
From Berks County Pa. I've been craving a good shoo-fly. Thanks.
Hadassah is going to be a great cook. Learning at the hands of a master cook.
♥
Your Shoo-fly pie looks delicious! You're so good at making pie crust too :-) Love the little hand pie making device and your sweet helpers!
My mother was the best pie maker ,just one of her talents,..and this is my favorite pie along with a cup of hot tea, thank you again 😋
I have never had Shoo-fly pie. Maybe I can try this recipe on my own. Thank you for sharing.
I have never had a shoo-fly pie. Looks amazing. I love how your daughter was in there making her individual apple pies too. Thank you for sharing.
You are so welcome!
Thanks for the fun! The reason pie dough should not be worked too much is because wheat flour creates gluten. The more it is worked, the more gluten strands are created and the "tougher" the dough becomes. So, for delicate, flaky pie dough, ingredients should be worked as little as possible so gluten formation is as little as possible. Also, if ingredients are cold cold cold, the water creates steam and puffs up the fat-infused dough. Cold and gentle are the keys!
Yes!!
I had heard of shoo fly pie but never knew what it was. Thanks for sharing.
What I would have given to have that hand pie gadget when I was younger! My mom and I used to make fried apple hand pies to sell for our church every year. Mom always just used a saucer for the round template and a fork to close them. Worked great but the uniformity wasn’t there. Made my share of Shoo-Fly pies too! We always used molasses that weren’t black strap. Used to buy it locally. I loved the stuff! Mix it with butter and eat with a hot biscuit…..it was heavenly!
Thanks for making these they look amazing. I have had these in the past but never knew how to make them 🥰
I am Surprised Ruth Ann that you do not like to Cook, Well you sure put a lot of Love into your Cooking 8-4-2023❤

I had shoo fly pie twice. Once was at an Amish recipe and was delicious. The other I bought at the grocery store and it wasn't so good. I never attempted to make one. You make it look pretty simple to make. I love the kids pies too. Nice that they enjoy helping in the kitchen.

Thank you for taking the time to share this recipe. It's always nice to watch someone else make something and learn new technique's. Also, I was taught to use a pastry cutter and still do- I have taught both my kids to use one to. My dad learned to make pie crust from my great grandmother and he makes the best crusts. Maybe I should have him write it out how he does it
