Attack On Titan's Racial Themes Explored
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 чер 2024
- Attack on Titan is one of the most popular anime series of the last decade. In this video, we'll be exploring the racial themes and real world parallels that are presented in the Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) anime and manga. Ethnic and racial identity become a very important part of the story in the later part of the series. This video will explain the main races and their histories, and compare/contrast their situations to real world parallels. There's been debate if Attack on Titan is meant to be 'fascist' or right wing, and this video somewhat covers that.
This video has very light manga spoilers, so it is safe to watch if you are an anime-only viewer. This video features Eren Yeagar, Mikasa Ackerman, Armin Arlert, Reiner Braun, Gabi Braun, Bertolt Hoover, Levi Ackerman, Annie Leonhardt, Falco Grice, Connie Springer, Historia Reiss, and more.

You could also have touched on the fact that it was the Eldian elite who essentially allowed their empire to fall.
In reality, the one running Marley who oppress Eldians are also Eldians (The Tybur Family) who enjoys lavish lifestyle.
And the Will of the First King made Frieda prefer the death of her own people to defending them. Almost like irl cosmopolitans…
@Yang Wen Li I think that is a pretty far fetched interpretation in this case. Some of the other examples you give seem more convincing.
Indeed, elites whose only claim to power comes from a fake government commanded by a fake king, and whose only purpose is to milk their population dry using media, religion, and degeneracy. Sound familiar? (Hint: Zionism)

It really is sad how most Europeans hate themselves over lies
@@Boy-wi9tk You mention conquest like that’s a good thing. Is that Really something to be proud of?
Are you being serious ? Europe & US celebrate their history in all formats of media throughout the 19th, 20th & 21st centuries 😂 So now there’s stronger opposition to the way history is taught and a stronger critique of how European institutions impacted the globe you revert to saying “Europeans are taught to hate themselves” Winston Churchill maybe a hero to the British but not to Indians, Africans and even working class Brits for obvious reasons. Furthermore, European institutions taught the global south to hate themselves and told them they had no history and were barbaric uncivilised people groups. You suffer from historical amnesia my friend.
Yes, every civilizations conquers
It's not most. It just seems that way due to the false reality you are shown by the media, academia etcetera. The truth is most people just want to live their lives and don't care either way and the liberals you meet who say they hate their own race are just doing a performance to maintain their "good person" status with other liberals. Who set this all this up? I can't really say who because my comment may be taken down. I'll put it this way; it's a group of swindlers that have been living with Europeans for 2000 years and have an axe to grind due to us not wanting to be their slaves and telling them to get lost when they just won't stop. Also just a general power tactic.
@@Sahih_al-Bukhari_2658 as long as civilians aren't harmed, yes its morally correct to defeat an inferior government and army to supply a people with a superior one. Most great conquerers like Aurelian never harmed civilians and granted them equal rights almost immediately after conquering them, which ironically caused his downfall.
You can only find themes like this in japanese media anymore.
A western series with such themes wouldn't even be allowed to run.
Million Dollar Extreme's World Peace made relatively light jokes that merely alluded to these themes and the troupe was blacklisted in the entertainment industry.
@@raccoononymous The problem with MDE is that they went too far, you must realize that when Sam made the "Dews are awesome" episode, there were 2 dews producers inside the set. They(dews) were more afraid of what it would happen to themselves than of what Sam was actually doing. If they greenlit that stuff they would be over. MDE was not cancelled before because they were avant-guarde, it is like that Blades of Glory(2007) segment: "nobody knows what it means, but it is provocative! It gets the people going". Soon enough, for better or worse, everyone discovered what was going on, MDE just accelerated that process. You can't tell if this wasn't their primary objective after all, and in my POV it was a success. That event blew up the lid of an entire generation and culture wars became mainstream.
You cannot say precisely, but I imagine there is intelligence assets riding twitter accounts, UA-cam shows and podcasts. They are eager to understand memetics and how it works so they can exploit it for their own goals. 4chan, MDE and frog twitter is a mystery that they are starting to unravel. They still don't know how to use it, but they are starting to understand how it happened.

That's why they're going for Lord of The Rings right now. Too white, gotta "diversify" it.
It's hard for me to have sympathy for Gabi, she really resembles some of the worst people in our political situation...
The whole point of Gabi's character is for the viewers to try to learn how to let go of their hatred. It's not easy, but you gotta try.
And Eren is the symbol of a person who could not let go of that hate. (though technically "hate" isn't his actual motivation)
@@MIZZKIE Her whole point is to be a counterpoint to Eren , another side of the same table.

@@GabrielAlves-fw7bj Yes, I am aware of that, ever since she appeared in the manga. She even has the almost exact character design of official female Eren that Isayama drew.

@@radegastov1570 That's not far off from the truth, only these children have been brainwashed into WANTING to kill their fellow countrymen and betraying everything we stand for.
They're indoctrinated, but the atrocities they commit, like the "Summer of Love," is just as much their choice as it is their leader's wishes, therefore it is folly to not regard both as a threat.
You're literally the only person on the internet who didn't fall for the armband ruse and say that eldians are jews. Bravo. I mean, people who claim that are so oblivious they're not even aware of how hilariously anti-semitic this analogy is.
Theres some obvious references to nazis and jews but I think its much safer to assume the mangaka is taking about something thats happening right now. Your right though.
*looks at Cartoonshi*
Thing is, no one really believes the Eldians are Jewish stand-ins. "The Eldians should be put out of their misery for world peace" is considered an understandable perspective both in-story and among the fandom, even for those who disagree. If people really thought of the Eldians as Jewish, no one would asset that opinion and anyone who tried would be cancelled. The only reason people connect the Eldians with the Jews is that we're all taught to see the Jews in every fictional oppressed people by default. The armbands are the one parallel.
Okay, there's two. There's a real world country that has its own version of The Rumbling. It's called the Saul Doctrine or the Solomon Plan, something like that...
@Gabi Do blonde blue eyed jews not exist to you?
@Gabi Wrong.
The message of the anime is one so simple and obvious yet so far away from today's discourse:
A people that have power at one point in time can be bad an oppressive against another people.
At a different point in time, that same people might become the oppressed by those who they oppressed.
No people is inherently evil, and we should allow people to be thankful and take joy in their own group while promoting peace and cooperation with other peoples.
I can’t help but think about how whites are demonising constantly and so many hate their own race/people and want to be “one of the good ones” shows how this show really correlates with the real world and like you said the oppressed become like their oppressors you could also look at Israel’s and Palestine the same way

The fact that Eldians really were oppressive in the past makes the parallels all the more salient. Despite this, the guilt forced on them is portrayed as wrong, and their actions of self-defense justified. This is why AoT is the most based anime.
Frieda, and all of the Paradis monarchs, are like the elites who are more concerned with others’ wellbeing than their own peoples’.
@Yang Wen Li Isayama has said in interviews that his inspiration for the series began after he noticed disgust he felt for a Korean guy… That said, the white-guilt analogy also clearly works…
@Yang Wen Li Also, Japanese people love MacArthur to this day, and Guilty Crown portrayed Dan Eagleman as an absolute Chad…
@BK Agreed, and that’s also clearly the stance that Isayama himself takes, with Armin as his primary mouthpiece character.
@BK It is acceptable if those are the only remaining options. Either you perish, or your adversaries do. That's total war.
Attack on Titan shows that if you accuse and treat innocent people as devils they will become the very devils to defend themselves.

Well I think it's worth noting that the same dynamic explored in AoT and in the west toward whites can also be applied to the Japanese. Since you mentioned that the author is rumored to be nationalist then maybe that's where the real source of inspiration for the plot comes from. After WW2, many Asian ethnicities but particularly the Chinese have had a deep resentment towards Japan for all of their diabolical war crimes and the Japanese themselves were forced into passivity back onto their home island by the emerging world powers.

Great video. I’m glad other people saw past the surface level similarities between the Jews and the Elidians. Neither the marlyans nor the eldians are the nazis. The eldians were once the oppressors, who, under the ideology of a greedy king seized land and oppressed other people. Now the Eldians are are the oppressed, both by the marlians and the rest of the world. This is portrayed as unjust, bc it simply is. The marlians have turned into that what they hated, they use the “devils” to win wars and force others to become their allies. They are just like the eldians once were. Yet, the rest of the world also hates them, the cycle continues. The story is obviously anti imperialism, anti colonialism and anti war. The pro eldia faction participates in active history revisionism in order to make their cause look good, bc instead of acknowledging their peoples past actions and condemning them while still fighting for their own freedom they need a false clean and perfect image of themselves. The pro eldia faction is therefore also fundamentally flawed and even contributed to even more harm to their people (stealing the king leads to paradise loosing countless people as well as land, they indoctrinate zeke in the same way as eldians are indoctrinating their children). No group in attack on titans is a direct parallel to nazis or the people oppressed by nazis. The story uses references to real history but it is not parallel.
Also the videos interpretation is pretty much the opposite of the message the story. The story is about how no specific group but rather about humanity itself and how people have the right to live.
@@lunariancat6841 The eldians does represent Germany most of all. As Marley "2's", led almost the entire world against them. They were spreading anti-german media throughout Germany, before WW2. That's why Germany ended up burning a lot of those books, once they'd had enough.
@@lunariancat6841 "The marlians have turned into that what they hated, they use the “devils” to win wars and force others to become their allies"
That's exactly what Isreal does with the U.S military right now. Fighting all their wars for them in the middle east, which America gets absolutely no benefit from.
Thanks to you my final essay is going to be way easier
Wow this is my favorite video you've ever done Pax. I've watched all your other videos but for some reason i skipped this one. Really great stuff!
Very impressive essay on this series. I saw the parallels too and was especially with Eren when I realized what was going on. I don't know how it ends but I'm looking forward to see how it goes. One day we will also need our own real life Jaegerists.
Hmm read the manga. You’ve gotta do it or it’ll get spoiled for you.

I'm surprised Pax did not mention Zeke in comparison to Eren whose plan was to sterilise his own Race/People
The fact that Gabi was so hated belies the hypocrisy of the average Redditor or Twitter user.

God bless the Japanese.
Got turned onto this from the Comments Section on Argent's AOT vidya.
Good to see a based take on this Series for a change.

Interesting, while watching I was making all the small connections that would lead to here, but never made the big one.
I was like "Yager is literally me, I just want to live."
And then I find this video, it's like you pulled the thought straight out of my head.
Very well done.

I like how he pronounces "lie bell."
Lol. Yeah. I thought that was interesting too. It does make more sense if that's how it was really said since libel or "lie bell" is a *lie* about someone else.

perhaps i treated AOT too harshly...
Great Video! I had noticed these themes of race and the destructive nature that wrongful “forced guilt” over past misdeeds can lead to unnecessary cruelty & destruction. But you are the first person I’ve seen on UA-cam who has laid these themes out. Best of fortune to you on future videos.
Eldians weren't really Titans, we wuz the real Titans. Eldians just stole Titans like dey steal everything.
Oh no you half breeds certainly are of the Titans lineage. But I don’t think the author was referencing that.

Great analysis, Pax. I have been seeing the propaganda in the west which you hint at in the video. Really sad state.
The anime I recommend you watch (and it is one of my favorites) is Deca-Dence. It has some essence of the idea of the fringe and the center and the domination of the tyrant to account for all entities which Jonathan Pageau talks about.

To us Eldians that feel that way I would cite Jonathan Bowden and to build up upon that guilt. As he says:"I HAVE OVERCOME THAT".
Great work as always, Pax. You drew a clear, concise link between political reality and the fictional narrative. Very compelling analysis. Now I've got another show to put on the watchlist.

This was a brilliant video thank you for making it and showing the parallels with the real world.

Seasons 1-3 are the good stuff of the anime (which this analysis appears to be on). Season 4 is alright but if they do the manga way it will be the worst season of the show by far.
Also great choice of background music 👍
This hit deeper than I thought.
If the author is a nationalist then it would explain a lot. Maybe the author was inspired by what happened to Japan after WW2. Japan went from having a vast empire and strong military to now having no power to settle disputes by waging war. This might be a critique of the system imposed by the liberal powers after Japan's defeat. By creating this he might be saying hed like Japan to be restored to its former might and glory.
