    One of the most vibrating, horrible idling, ticking and rough running engines ever - but also the reliablest engine I know about. I love it, even if it sounds like falling apart the next few miles.

    Had a starlet in the family for years
    Drove it down every route in my country and drove it hard out and never once did the drivetrain have any issues
    One of the most reliable cars ever for sure

      Thanks! I still have that car, 7 years later, 77k miles on the clock and still never broke down nor a drop of oil burnt;)

    So I just inherited my Mum's old 1997 Starlet with the same 3rd-gen 4E-FE engine.
    According to my old man, they got it serviced once every 2 years (!) because she never did many kilometers in it.
    This thing was severely low on oil when I picked it up, I mean the dipstick was bone dry, and it was idling rough.
    I did an oil and filter change, put in new set of plugs, ran a couple of tanks of premium through it... now she's running sweet again. I used good quality semi-synthetic oil, so I can basically forget about it for another 20000km's. :)

      20000 BETWEEN OIL CHANGES - IN MY OPINION U SHOULD CHANGE OIL EVERY 50000 MILES
      SERVICED EVERY TWO YEARS DUE TO LOW MILEAGE BUT STILL BONE DRY DIPSTICK - THE DAMAGE WAS ALREADY DONE.

      toyota says change oil every 8kkm or 5k miles. it is only 3 liter oil inside

      This is so true, it is not loosing or burning a single drop of oil between yearly service!

      I'd say the whole car is one of the most reliable automobiles in the world. She's almost 17 years old and only one thing broke up: a light bulb burned!!!

      Only thing you really gotta watch on starlets is the wheel bearings.

      I've had my '95 starlet for 10 yrs now and I refuse to sell it even tho I had a few issues with it on n off over the yrs and recently. but I rather fix my lil beanie as I call it; before I sell it, plus its good on gas and the body seems a lil sturdier than some newer cars.

    I just bought a corolla 1.3 4-efe with only 36 thousand miles on it and its making a ticking but i can also hear it on deacceleration inside the car it seems to be coming from under the valve cover is that normal ? I thought maybe the valves need adjusting but its only got low genuine mileage. Thanks for any info on the subject :).

    • @EricJones1969
      @EricJones1969 5 місяців тому

      We checked valves in mine 4efe at 170000km. No adjustment needed.
      Mine is also got that rattle and ticking. All the 4e I've heard sound like this one.

    • @MisterAmbassador
      @MisterAmbassador 5 місяців тому

      @@EricJones1969 I checked the valves also and they are fine. I've since realised that they all make that sound. Still going no problems other than I hit a massive pothole and had to change my suspension. Even bent my rear suspension arm! So had to replace them to, that was an expensive hole !

  • @ergodynic

    Can anyone tell me where that high sounding ticking noise comes from?
    Just bought one of these beauties and was a little confused about that. Seems to be normal though

    • @DiBodiMax
      @DiBodiMax  8 років тому +2

      I asked my mechanic the same question years ago and the only thing I remember is that it's completely normal. Maybe it's the ignition distributor making that ticking noise when producing spark?

      I have two 1998 Starlets with the same engine. One was brought as a doner for the other. The doner was too good to scrap. Both are on the road now. one at 150k miles, the othre at 210k miles. Both seem happy to go on for ever. Both have that ticking, its expected and it comes from the dizzy. Enjoy.

    • @DiBodiMax
      @DiBodiMax  9 років тому

      Júlio César
      First generation 4E-FE:
      The first generation of 4E engines found in the Starlet GI, Soleil and Corolla models were produced from 1989 until 1996. The engine found in these two models produces 88 bhp (66 kW) at 6,600 rpm and 86 lb·ft (117 N·m) at 5,200 rpm. This engine had more in common with the 4E-FTE, sharing the same throttle body, and slightly larger fuel injectors.
      Specs:
      74 mm Bore
      77.4 mm Stroke
      9.6:1 Compression Ratio
      Second generation 4E-FE:
      The 2nd Generation of the 4E-FE was introduced in 1996 producing less peak power: 74 bhp (55 kW) at 5,500 rpm, but with a slight increase in peak torque 87 lb·ft (118 N·m) at 4,400 rpm. The 2nd generation of the 4E-FE was essentially the same engine as the first but the intake and exhaust manifolds were changed along with a slight alteration of the ECU meant to reduce exhaust emissions.
      Specs:
      74.3 mm Bore
      77.4 mm Stroke
      9.6:1 Compression Ratio
      Third generation 4E-FE:
      In 1997 the intake manifold was changed again along with the ECU and the result was 85 bhp for the Corolla and 82 bhp for the Starlet. This engine was discontinued in 1999.

      Júlio César It is definitely not the first.
      I can double check by looking at the bore and stroke values in my car's manual.

    That injection is from an ep82 4efe... not an ep91 like yours As you can search efi injection for the ep91 is a circle instead of the box..

    • @DiBodiMax
      @DiBodiMax  7 років тому

      Are you talking about the Intake (not injection)? Well, All EP91 in Europe had the boxy intake chamber and not the tubular one!
