I put the sheepdog outside the pen of a ewe that won't take to her lamb , that way the ewes protection instincts kicks in , it works on most ewes , first lambers can be tricky
gamergirl funtimes Lolol! It would be great if that would work. I would have come nearer to hurting myself rather than my baby boy. He’s forty now and still we are very very close. I don’t understand how a mother could not love her own child.
It's even tough for a human female to have a doctor rip a baby out, you tend to go in shock, they ask you questions or talk to you and all you want to do is cry from feeling like someone tore your insides out of you, it's barbaric!!! Try having someone push their arm down your nostril to rip your heart out and it's the size of a watermelon coming out your nose. Now you get it??? Probably not.
I feel like my story can back up your thoughts. Its with Goats though. 3 of the farm goats were pregnant. 2 by the same male. Both had twins, 1 set of girls, and 1 set of boys....each one had a stillborn and a live healthy one. Same male for both girls, both moms were the same age/breed, etc. healthy as you could want throughout the whole pregnancy. nicely cared for, birthed both solo and without issues. I always wondered if it was genetics that caused them to have identical issues
Sandi, Tie your Dog to the outside of the Pen, were the ewe is rejecting the lamb, the ewe will soon let the lamb feed, and protect the lamb. 100% works..
Girl don’t let anyone give you the business. Hard as you work. Invite them out to help for a week. That will shut them up. Your compassion and patience is amazing. I’m a city girl and enjoy videos, thank you!
I see my dad when this happened Sandy he would force the ewe to let the lamb suckle once the mims milk passed through the lamb she would accept it. My dad was a gentle sweet man but this really upset him. And we were sure of the mom our flock was small. But it's time consuming to work with one ewe so long.
I discard all the ewes that creates an issue during lambing. Theres a 50% chance that it happens again next time, and I dont have the patience to handfeed babies.

Thanks again for showing the whole spectrum of lambing from good to not so good. It makes me feel better about myself and some of the lambs we've lost. We have a much smaller flock, so we probably over-empathize with all our lambs and ewes.

I've just found your channel in the past couple of weeks and have been binge watching (I'm down with a crappy cold today). I'm not a farmer, but always thought I wanted to be. Guess it's a good thing I didn't marry a farmer - I would never have had the physical strength or endurance to do this kind of work, even if I would have loved it. Thank you for documenting and sharing your life!
This vlog was really interesting. It seems that the majority of lambs that died or are struggling look the same! The grey polka dot ones. Would that be a dad issue? Bad genes?
When you have a lamb that may have fluid in its lungs after birth there's a trick to expectorating the fluid. We did it hen our pups had the same problem. Hold the lamb stradling your forearm, cradle it's head in that hand, hold on to the body and in a sweeping motion from your mid chest swing the lamb downward. We'd cradle a pup in our hand with head at fingers swing downward and with the pull of gravity the fluid would be expelled.
Thats what we did with our lambs and goat kids. My dad used to take a piece of straw and wiggle it around in the babies nose to try and get them to sneeze in hopes that would help get the fluids out of the lungs
The ewe which wouldn't take her lamb was she a first timer. I had a first timer which had a hard lambing with a big single and took 12 hrs to take, she went on to have several sets of triplets which she raised with just a bit of help
This month I’ve got the experience of taking care of four orphaned lambs that didn’t get taken by their mothers at my school barn! It has been a really fun and heart warming experience taking care of these precious things!🥺💜
The best advice from my vet: when lamb get out, let it laying on his chest, front legs forward. Never let it laying on side. Breathing is easier and it will get up very fast
