@@alexac3098 I'm pretty sure it's intentional. If you watch Bob Balaban's character throughout the movie, he's clearly striving for perfection. He cringes constantly during the auditions and tries to dismiss them, when Corky is in awe of their performances. He's clearly the real professional, when Corky is a well meaning but lovable hack. It's just a brilliant subtle running background gag.
I mean, it's conceptually very funny that, in a stage production honoring the 150th anniversary of a town, there's a whole song about how boring the town is, and the inherent dichotomy of depicting that in a form that's intended to entertain. But ultimately, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy in terms of, if this sequence is about how nothing's happening, of course you'd cut it, despite some of the goofy choreography, O'Hara's comedically overemphatic delivery, Willard coasting on polished confidence despite vocal ineptitude, the line "bupkes ever happens," and the narrator's spoonerism mispronunciation "furry of blabies."
Plenty happens in small towns, you just have to know where to look. All those true crime shows talk about the serene suburban veneer, only to reveal the seamy underbelly.
The only good thing about "Red White & Blaine" is the music. The lyrics are lame. The choreography is awful. The singing sucks. The costumes are mostly bad. The makeup is hilarious. The melodies and the playing is great.
The orchestra is total Broadway every number!
The ending makes me tear up, every time. Perfection.
