After Jessica's departure, the girls still maintained their own or "better." That's because songs like Party and Lionheart were hits and Lionheart album was so good. There is so much that goes into harmonies. When it comes to the vocal line, they can easily take over each other due to their vocal type. Tiffany and Taeyeon are Mezzos so they often don't harmonize and makes it hard for Tiffany to get main vocal title due to that reason even though we know Tiffany is a main vocal outside of titles. Sunny, Seohyun, and Jessica are Sopranos so they dont harmonize much with each other and sound better with a mezzo (Tiffany or Taeyeon). With Jessica gone, Sunny could easily take the position and notes to give the harmonizes a lighter touch. But I dont think she wants to take Jessica's position or the company doesnt want to give it to her because they dont want Taeyeon to get outshined. Personally, I think Seohyun's vocals is the hardest to replace because she has a distinct tone. Seohyun is part of a lot of harmonies and ever since Jessica's departure, has taken more of the harmonies. Honestly, Seohyun was the "third main vocal" since the beginning of their career because she was just as good as Jessica. Jessica got the main vocal title because both her and Seohyun are Sopranos and there could only be one.
It did hurt as a fan when Jessica was no longer in the group, but I've moved on because I'm sure Jessica has moved on and is happy on her own path just like all the girls. But sometimes it does make me sad watching really old live shows of Kissing You and ITNW. Makes me sad their bond is what made the group special. I just don't like toxic Jessica stans since they were too cruel to Taeyeon and Tiffany.
In all honestly, I wish SM trained YoonA and Sooyoung vocally from the beginning because YoonA shows a lot of potential vocally and Sooyoung could sing but needs the proper vocal technique, so she doesnt damage her voice. Plus dance line have amazing tones in their vocals as Sopranos so if we got to see them get trained from the beginning, we could have seen so much out of SNSD.

Interesting. I don't know how to use 'Mezzo' 'Soprano', Alto' etc knowledgably (I just know how to spell them) so in my ignorance I'm surprised you apply the same 'label' to Taeyeon's and Tiffany's voices...but I'll defer to you because I'd be way out of my depth.
Nonetheless, I confidently agree with essentially everything else you've said. Here's my two cents, as notes (rather than a coherent analysis or reasoned argument):
From the start, everyone in SNSD had a distinct vocal 'color'
For me, Seohyun's great vocal talents were properly displayed in TTS, and in OT8.
Overall, I thought Jessica and Tiffany were 'equal' with complementary vocal strengths and weaknesses but I have my suspicions that there is a 'cuteness' in the middle of her range that Tiffany didn't have, that had a greater appeal to a lot of people in the OT9 years.
One member whose vocals have been and still are, underappreciated, is IMHO, Yuri. Inoticed it from the start..her part in ITNW...a high note with a tone as clear as a bell and as sharp as broken glass (ooh...sorry about the pun!). Bottom line, Yuri, Sunny Sooyoung Yoona and Hyoyeon IMHO are all good singers who could have become 'great' with some encouragement and serious coaching.
The thing is though, SNSD just sounds effing great, all the time, regardless of vocal training, imposed, willingly embraced or neglected for whatever reason because the basic talent/gift is still all there.
Yes there's a difference between OT9 and OT 8 when the same song is sung...but then SNSD did plenty of performances when they were missing a member because of their crazy schedules, and there are plenty of new arrangements of their familiar hits that they did for their live concerts and they ALWAYS sounded fantastic, because they are all individually talented, and they and the production teams always worked together to make the most of their talents, regardless of the situation.
FYI : I qualify as a "Samchon".who discovered SNSD by accident in 2019 and learned about them through their early variety shows and interviews, before delving into their MVS and performances. I was captivated by their individual personalities and their group dynamic...their sense of fun, their seriousness, their consideration for each other and their fans, their wicked sarcasm....from the very fist episode of Girls Go To School, and I chose to learn more about them specifically in chronological order...every interview, radio appearance, commercial, variety show, special stage, MV, concert, etc..
Of course, I've LIKED various entertainers, actors, musicians and groups before, and still do...(and I was even a celebrity photographer in New York, for a couple of years, back in the 80's) but I've never been "a FAN" of anyone, until SNSD.
Anyway.. IMHO you are correct in what you said. I shall now educate myself on what Mezzo et cetera really means! Thanks for the 'nudge' to improve myself! 😁

I personally think its because there were diagreements & miscommunications regarding her fashion brand that she started @ the time. Which is hilarious bc they said she was priortizing her fashion brnad over the group blah blah blah & then literally two years later they went on hiatus to do THEIR OWN STUFF just like Jessica was trying to do. Not to mention other members even at the time had solo acting schdeules & would miss group schdules for it yet they weren't forced out for it lmaoooo. i just thunk its funny. I love them all bc i dont know them as people & i personally do not care. They are all 9 thriving now in their different ways & thats all that matters in the end.

Good points. At the LA K-Con a week before Jessica got the boot, Tiffany (in typical supportive and also 'Manager Hwang' mode) specifically promoted Jessica's fashion business on her behalf. My guess is that the timing was really bad. My guess is that Jessica reached a critical point where she had to make a major commitment to whoever was investing in her proposed business to take it 'mainstream' and independent of SM...and that happened just as they were gearing up for their Japanese Tour, which was a BFD as well. The pressure from all sides had to be considerable, and I guess Jessica decided (or indeed may have been legally pressured at that time) to choose a future as her own boss, rather than an employee of SM. And surely the rest of the girls from all sides were under great pressure too, from SM and their own feelings.
As a very late SNSD fan (since 2019) I don't have the emotional stake in OT9 as 'original' SONE do...but as I took a chronological journey in learning about SNSD, I've always enjoyed and appreciated Jessica's 'ice princess' persona of boredom (and sarcastic humor) with the amount of artifice involved in professional entertainment.
What does fascinate me though, is how extraordinary this situation was. NOT because a member group member left. or was 'fired'.. but because of immediate and consequent effects.
SM shares lost 16% of their value when Jessica left...a testament to her importance to the group, and SNSD's importance to SM.
Historically, in a typical 3,4 or 5 member group, the departure of a "Main Vocalist" would result in a disbandment...but SNSD had twice the typical number of members as the average girl group, and three times the number of 'main' vocalists, while the 'sub-vocalists' were arguably as good as 'main' vocalists compared to some other groups...so the loss of Jessica's vocals was arguably a technicality, despite her talents and popularity. And unlike other groups, SNSD members, despite their respective personal ambitions, were still hugely invested in each other.
So SNSD not only survived, they continued to thrive, and IMHO this was the point where SNSD became their own entity, their own 'brand', rather than one of SM's 'products'.
I think their current comeback illustrates this very well. Since 2017 Tiffany , Seohyun and Sooyoung signed with other agencies, and yet they not only performed at the latest SMTown concert, they were the last to leave, and they were all hugged by Lee Sooman.
At the last pre-pandemic Dream Concert in 2019, instead of closing with 'Arirang', as they had done for 20+ years, they closed with SNSD's debut ITNW...an acknowledgment of SNSD's impact on K-Pop.
As important as Jessica was to SNSD's rise, as talented and hardworking as she was, despite her 'main vocal' status, she was never the most significant member of the group, because NONE of them were, or are. Look at all the times they've performed missing 1 or 2 or 3 members, on radio and special stages and events, or as SNSD or TTS or SHY or Oh-GG! or in duets. As individuals and as a compete group, they've always been 'top-tier', and such is their commitment to each other and their fans, they will always be "Forever 1"...in spirit, and in the K-Pop pantheon ( OMG...apologies for being so 'cringey' but really...I mean it!)

25:50 Girls' Generation music (or more specifically their sound) did indeed change after jessica's departure, sure, as you mentioned, snsd had many other great vocalist so there wasn't really a void, however Jessica's voice was the most featured in the group's choruses and harmonies, even more than Taeyeon's, there are even some songs in which the choruses (in wich they supposedly sing all together) are just Jessica's voice with taeyeon or seohyun doing harmonies (try really listening to kissing you)

OMG! You never saw this before?!!! Greatest performance in history. This was the tour right after Jessica left...that's where the intense emotion comes from. That gap is for sure Jessica's spot.
Jessica's was seriously trying to really establish her fashion business and what she needed to do to make that happen created a conflict with the tour schedule. Decision's had to be made, tons of pressure on everyone, and...boom..Jessica and the show had to go on without her.
IMHO anyone trying to claim Sunny or Tiffany pushed Jessica out is just peddling a 'cat-fight' trope.
" I should learn this choreo"....there's a very recent video by "floopy" who IIRC was an idol trainee, and is a dancer who did a marathon of SNSD choreographies...all the hits you'd expect, and ranked them in order of difficulty. The hardest was....ITNW!
    Here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/jwpI0qEqMCU/v-deo.html
    Regarding lip-sync/live...
After all the SNSD performances I've watched and listened to, it seems to me the music shows use lip-sync the most, and that's understandable because they have a tight schedule with lots of performers and the purpose is to promote, and reproduce the recording studio sound and quality.
SNSD in concert, performing for 2-1/2 hours, has used the backing tracks and there's been some lip-syncing at times, but it's definitely been 'ratioed' for each member and for each song...and SNSD has still clearly sung live even if the mix has been 80/20 in general because they're doing three songs in a row without a break...and even then the mix is individualized. It all has to be balanced for the overall concert. and its clear from too many perfectly captured moments to count that SNSD really do SING because even if they aren't on top form, they know its their duty to perform to the best of their abilities, and that's just what they do. They really don't 'fake' anything.

16:00 Actually every member is singing their own lines "except" Yoona who is singing Jessica's line, but the verses of ITNW repeat so Yoona is singing her own line which is the same as jessica's but in the fisrt verse. Also Yuri took Jessica's line in the bridge, but other than that is the same.

The Sunny Lee Sooman thing is totally BS, LSM resign in 2010 to take care of his wife with cancer.
I don't think the girls have power to kick her out of the group, you know Suju have even worst fights between them, why SM will waste a lot of money reshooting Catch me if you can, re recording a lot of their songs for the Tokyo Dome concert, even banning Jess from korean entertaiment just bc the girls told SMent to kick her out.
I think is all bc Jess Fashion brand (Blanc&Eclare) doing so good and SM was not happy about them not getting a cut out of it

This!!! SM didn’t like that Jess is having something outside from them. Something they can’t control and can’t make money from. Though yes the other girls were also busy with solo activities none of them made a contract “business” outside SM. It was more “give us percentage or leave sm for good” I remeber her brand was so huge back then because a lot of sm artists promoted it and also they were in their peak era. Yes they were in 2 year hiatus and I think it was also because the girls saw growth outside the group, hence the 5yrs for them this time.

On the matter of Jessica's departure, in my opinion, it's more probable that the problem was her clothes brand (Blanc & Eclare) and the possible conflict in either schedule or money. And for me the problem wasn't between the girls but with the management, because they have exclusive contracts in KPOP that are very strict and way different than what we have in Europe or USA.
Mr mr was the last title released has a group of 9 and they had just renewed their contracts for 3 years. At that time there was a lot of discussion since several of the girls wanted to do other things (solo, acting, radio...).
And their next song Catch me if you can included Jessica initialy and the MV was redone after her departure.
But yeah, we'll never know for sure.

23:18 THAT THEORY IS THE FURTHEST FROM TRUE ... from Jessica's side she claims that there was indeed a fight, but she only really puts the blame on 2 of the girls (and their parents), and long time sones know that sunny is for sure not one of them, actually people said that jessica mentioned (not sure about this) that she keeps in contact with SOME of the members ..... HOWEVER most fans actually "confirmed" this (me too, this is 100% true) a couple years ago when in JESSICA's BIRTHDAY VLOG we heard the voices of YOONA and SUNNY, and both were some of her closest friends in the gorup.

About the LIPSYNC comment actually Yoona and Yuri both lipsync their parts in the first performance (despite having nice vocals they always laked a lot of confidence) and sooyoung and hyoyeon sang very lightly so we hear a bit more of the backtrack they are all sub vocals and ITNW choreo is actually very hard and tiresome so it's expected .... JESSICA's case is very interesting cuz she actually also lipsynced her lines in the verse and bridge but sang live the high notes in the last chorus .... which is almost the contrary of what most singers do, but she used to do that very often.

    • @jesusrivera0509
      @jesusrivera0509 2 роки тому +3

And about the mic it is very true that most of the time when they have the little head mics they are probabbly lipsyncing but with SNSD (in their old day) they would have the members with challenging notes with a hand mic and the rest with head mics, for example in THE BOYS in some LIVE performances taeyeon, seohyun and jessica would have hand mics (since only those 3 have high notes in the song) while the rest were singing their lines live on the head mics, and with DANCING QUEEN taeyeon, jessica, seohyun and tiffany all have the same high note (even if they execute it differently) but (in some of the live performances) only seohyun and tiffany would have hand mics while taeyeon and jessica would have head mics ... and that is because it is more difficult to sing challenging parts with head mics since the control dependes entirely on the singer, while a hand mic helps you control your voice, and at the time it was still difficult for seohyun and tiffany to handle those high notes live.

@@jesusrivera0509 I have an SNSD archive like JaeJjae's and no doubt when I've detected lip synching by SNSD it's been 'consistently inconsistent' meaning it has varied according to the performance venue, event, the specific song, member and assigned vocal part.
I have quite a few examples of SNSD members failing to hit, or avoiding a high note, going flat on a low note and so on..mostly during their live 'viewable radio performances from the early days, proving they aren't all perfect, all the time.
Lipsyncing is 'performance insurance', mostly used by the network pop-chart shows. IMHO SNSD has used lip-syncing sparingly and specifically, and for practical reasons because they all can sing well, for real..they've demonstrated that fact countless times.
I forget which tour..Girls and Peace maybe (?) when Sooyoung 'goes-off' singing really badly on purpose at the end of the concert. Along with her (and Yuri's) infamous sloppy Lion Heart stage rehearsals, I consider them some of the greatest performances in K-Pop history...because I'm perverse like that. 😁
