I bought this same one 3 days before. and I knew about the plastic melting problem when I had watched your youtube. I will not use this thing in my fish tank and keep it in a box or trash it out. By the way, I have a idea about solving it. If I could pasted a UV blocking flim in inner sleeve tube, could be the problem repaired?
Thanks for the heads up. Think I'll just spray the one I just ordered with Krylon UV protectant or for plastic. Can't hide everything and thinking I should spice up some exposed components with some color anyway.
@@jrullo4716 Don't know, sprayed it with Krylon, had a snail infestation in another tank, and forgot about it. The algae had dropped way off, I think because I'd put a couple sprigs of Potos in the tank and they grew like mad robbing the algae of nutrients.
I’ve been using these filters for the tanks of my two turtles for a little more than two years now. should i switch them due to this plastic problem? didn’t think it was much of an issue as it has been fine for a while but might take the extra precautions
I don't see why that wouldn't work. might even work BETTER, because you're now reflecting the UV light back into the tube, amplifying the effect probably by at least 50% or more. just make sure it doesn't interfere with the flow-through.
for anyone doing this just soak the piece of cut black plastic you need in hot water and your replacement piece of 1& 1/2 piece of pvc will slide right in to the black piece of plastic nice and tight
I did this mod, but with Black PVC pipe. I still get the black residue, but far less. I am gonna try to find some White pvc pipe, as that makes more sense. Haven't been able to find any UV resistant pipe though.
Why are you showing ppl how to diy? U should be tell ppl not to buy it or those who had already bought it should return it if it is having issues. By doing what you're doing, you are encouraging the sale of a seriously faulty product which can kill some precious fishes!! Pls be more sensible about it instead or think how many likes you can get!!!
plumbing pvc is not uv resistant either. PVC conduit from the electrical section is a better option

Did it work?

What if you put aluminum foil inside the plastic container of the bulb?
or a ceramic sheet. it will protect the plastic cover from the uv..so no uv on the plastic. no leeching

Crap. I just ordered this. Hope they improved it.
It’s a uv light in plastic. It’s going to deteriorate. Even the PVC will deteriorate.
Any updates on how this is doing?

So basically this is going to melt right after I put this in my tank?
If that's the case, I'm returning it right now, just got it and there are no instructions at all. I don't even know if it's on!
I did a video on these! I love this mod i will be doing this on all 3 i have
I just socked the piece of cut plastic and my pvc piece slid right in to the black plastic piece nice and tight
Don't use it 24/7 it will be fine
So it works??
works great
Isn't the plastic around the bottom and top of the sleeve still exposed to the UV light?
Did this, but used a piece of UV resistant 50ml pipe, by heating the top the threaded portion fits inside the PVC, bit of silicon and good to go.

If ur using a uv for a fish tank thats a waste uv is only really to combat sunlight
LOL here mr wizard www.animalplanet.com/search/algae/
ABSOLUTELY WRONG , YOU MUST HAVE A SINGLE DIGIT IQ !
