Anna, today's conversation is very interesting because it touches the very sensitive part of modern life- politics, the topic that as a rule is forbidden to discuss with foreigners,as it is like walking at the edge of something dangerous; so many system -so many views Thanks for dareness and good luck, Olga
Hello Anna, Salam. M khurram..One of your students from Lahore/Pakistan. You are looking marvelous and fabulous in this lesson. May you always be like this...Ameen
Hi Anna. Very extraordinary" by accident" .Firstly I also thought you did it (P.Cat) matching with PC.Anyways, great lesson about politics, political English. Thans a lot.
Do you plan to make a session similar to this one on the subject of Weather and Natural disasters (probably two sessions)? Weather: precipitation (types), wind (types (blizzard, storm, tornado etc), temperatures (too high and too low) etc. And what impact it could have on people (floods, drought, freezing - to be drown, heat stroke/famine, hypertermia etc), distraction of building and structures. Natural disasters: volcano activity (ash, lava, impact on flight etc), earthquakes and thusami (tremors, aftershocks(?), flooding), asteroid strike - impact to people.
Happy Christmas and happy new year, Anna. Can I ask a question, please? What can I say, Neither of us is or are interested? AND None of us is or are interested? .... Also Neither of my parents is or are interested? ....... Thanks so much.
hi. I see this video has been filmed in May 2017, so the info about BREXIT are not totally correct, in fact on june 26th 2017 UK made some reasonable offers to EU and apparently nobody will be sent back home and asked to leave UK. Of course things will change but I dont think EU citizens will need a visa or something to visit the UK, and as for those already in the UK (working, legally) everyone will be given the chance to stay. this is just a recap of those offers, which will be reviewed at the end of august 2017 (so they say...). Love the way you teach the language, I'm italian. xxx
How to watch you live? I just saw your video about Brexit and also others that you had with Lucy. BTW, where is she? Great Video! You can make all the Politics stuff much easier to understand.
P.S . There is a democrasy in our country, I personnaly quite satisfied with present situation in politics here , and even with some changes , I value stability and firmness of our president and government that we have now, I feel secure as plenty of people as well
Hello Anna, Many thanks for your engaging lessons, I do like the way you make them and teach, congratulations! I hope in a few days I will be talking like native British English. What I can suggest is to link us as Pen Pals to practise our English by writing and improve our verbal communication skills. I am ready to exchange with anyone willing to do so either through email or Skype. Please, you guys who would like to be fast in mastering this Shakespeare's language, contact me so that we can arrange our meeting hours. My name is Celestin and I live in Lille, France. Blessings.

The Queen of England cannot realistically veto a law passed by parliament. (See 37:00 where Anna discusses this.) In other words, the Queen of England cannot prevent a law from being passed and enforced. Technically the Queen needs to agree to every law, this is called "royal assent" (see Wikipedia). In reality, the King or Queen has not vetoed a bill since 1708, when Queen Anne refused to approve the Scottish Militia Bill. Today, the Queen cannot act alone to veto a bill, she must be "acting on the advice of her ministers". Realistically, the Queen can't even do that unless the UK is on the brink of a revolution. The Queen does not actually sign every bill, they stopped doing that in 1967 because it was a waste of time. The Queen tells someone that she approves, and then two Letters Patent are sent, one to the House of Lords and one to the House of Commons. These are special letters on paper that say "the Queen approves". Some people who work for the Queen are also empowered to approve on her behalf. In other words, if the Queen is very sick, there are people that she chose in the past who are allowed to say "I'm sure the Queen would have approved of this, if she were not sick." I think these people also approve of very unimportant bills, because there are technically a huge number of bills. The Queen does sign some of the bills with a pen, while wearing a crown. She doesn't need to.
Could you please tell me the difference in spelling between the two words you mentioned : "raise" and... I don't know what was the other one -but it has a similar meaning-? Thank you.
1:03:22 - 'A huge majority didn't vote at all' - This isn't correct, the turnout was one of the highest in UK political history at 72.21%, so only 27.79% of those eligible didn't vote. This clearly isn't a 'huge majority'.
By the way,it has already passed two years since that time you made that lesson. How it is now in UK, how is it going? I mean political situations. Is it all right about Brexit? I mean is government regret of that decision they made before? Thanks again.
Anna, a very difficult set of topics handled well. Did some political history and theory courses at uni. Did my head in at times. Agee with the sex, religion and politics no-no; always a mine field - people don't like their personal views or beliefs challenged, even by their friends. Don't want to get into a I am right and you're wrong debate. Things often go pair-shaped! Finally learned how to pronounce BREXIT, I did the "K" thing too. Thank you. And yes, keep calm and carry on! A p.s. About the Queen's powers: she gives the Royal Assent to legislation and the the Bill (the draft) becomes the Act (the law); she can technically refuse as she as sovereign has the power as Head of State. She actually signs the bills. The last time Royal Assent was refused was by Queen Anne in 1708 (I think). So the Queen has the right of veto (as you mentioned) as the US President does. Down here the Queen is officially, "Queen of Australia" so basically same up as the UK. This set up is the same in most Commonwealth countries I believe. I did two years of law at uni and this sort of stuff is drummed into you in constitutional law. Didn't finish it as I decided law wasn't my cup of tea.
I don`t think she did simplify her vocabulary in order that you may better understand. Allow me to explain myself : I am listening to this video on the grounds that its title suggests it has something to do with British Politics and BREXIT. I myself am English, and would have spoken exactly as she does if I were addressing a fellow Briton. If you can hear and understand what she is saying, then she is doing very well in the explanation. And you are doing very well in the understanding. Good luck to you.
I went to the house of commons and had the luck to hear John Bercow live (I paid attention not to call him "Sir" John Bercow, as his title is "very respectable gentleman"!) and I "do" really wish the UK may remain a piece of EU28... not twisting to this (so sad!) EU27.
What a wonderful and lovely ANNA! You are so kind! Thank you for your amazing video!
