Hi there! I’ve made some game related load out videos too, and I’m really impressed about the detail, facts and performance put out in this video and the arma one, I remember these guys from COD MW very well and thought they were cool as hell. Nice work! 🎉
I never understood the politics of COD's Russian Ultranationalists: Ultranationalists are almost ALWAYS far right fascist and right wing, conservative reactionaries in their political, social, and often religious ideology, no matter the country or culture. ALL Communists are by definition of their political and social worldview INTERNATIONALISTS, with the few communist movements in the developing world who claim the 'nationalist' label being those living in a colonized or puppet nation seeking liberation from their foreign imperial oppressors, hence, "National Liberation Front" being commonly used in many of their names (The FMLN, FSLN, ELN, etc...) - these movements are still run by a Communist or Socialist Party. National Liberation Movements are not a separate political ideology or subsect of Socialist political thought, but rather, a TOOL, a WING of the struggle that has a very specific purpose: armed combat against an imperial oppressor. Other tools which are just as important involve mass union/labor organizations, student organizations, academic organizations, international outreach coalitions, etc. who each serve their own distinct purpose in the overall struggle. Communist movements - including National Liberation movements - do not seek to 'restore former glory' (restoring a nation's former past glory is, in fact, a RIGHT WING, FASCIST goal, not a Communist's), but rather, look to the future to build a society BETTER than the past and move BEYOND the outdated traditions that restrain the people from their potential, this is a major difference in right wing and left wing political thought. Now, you see none of this in COD's Russian Ultranationalist movement, and frankly, given COD's role as US government and military propaganda, I don't think they even put this much thought into this Big Bad. But if I were to guess their ideology: The superficial use of Soviet themes without any revolutionary message as well as their identification as an ultranationalist movement makes me think they are more like the Nazbol movement ("National Bolsheviks") of real life Russia, who are literally just Russian Neo-Nazees - right wing fascist reactionaries (reminder that the German Nazee Party stands for National Socialist German Workers Party).
One thing that can be done is taking a Czech winter winter coat. And wearing it under an additional camo jacket. (Flecktarn, DPM, various Russian camos). This is a cheaper alternative since Czech coats are cheap. If your coat is longer than what you're putting over it. Tuck it into the trousers. If it's too hot. Remove the fur collar since it's a modular jacket. Or take off the jacket entirely & keep your camo on after.
Great video! Would love to see something similar but with CoD 4 Remastered version of the Ultranationalists, since some aspects of the gear change between this and the OG version.
I was always waiting for The Athelas Project's part 2 on the COD4 Russian Ultranationalists, but life has kept him busy since. This video will serve excellently as such, thank you!
Yeah it sucks how he hasn’t released the second part. Seemed like a really unique insight into a part of CoD that has been long gone. I mean seriously I loved the look of the Ultranationalists
I was thinking that Ultranationalists would have looked like mix of Army and MVD gear, like Condor and Flora camo patterns + Gorka, Afghanka and KLMK. With mix of old Soviet webbing gear from Afghan war era like RPS-56, Lifchik, Belt A and B with 6B3 and 6B5 vests + some modern Russian army (at that time) webbing gear like Grad, SOBR, B, SMERSH and 6B23 vest
I find it really weird that both the Ultranationalists and Loyalists both use the original AK-47, but I like the overall plot of the game. Great video! I think it would be cool if you did one of the MW2 factions.
The fur collar isn't from an undergarment. It's from the M88 "Afganka" winter uniform set. It's "fish fur," same as the enlisted ushanka hats, not real fur. All of the tan uniforms worn by the Russian ultras in the CoD games are based on that M88 Afganka set, either the summer or winter uniform, not the "Gorka" suits.
IMO greek tigerstripe camo looks the closest in the game. But the other solid tan variants you see other playermodels wearing are probably leftover afghanka uniforms (in my head canon at least). I think if CoD had VSR-93 camo instead of the south african-esque camo it would make a lot more sense. I think they tried correcting it in MW3 during the makarov flashback by making the camo either VSR-98 or soviet dubok. a nice canvas RPG backpack with dummy RPGs sticking out would really sell it, and a solid brown LBV with some tan pouches, dummy RGD-5 grenades too. btw is that the kommando store sasha fleece?
Good eye, it is the sasha fleece. I agree btw, other camos would have been better if the devs did more research. As for the greek tigerstripe, I was pondering getting that for the video, but the 32 battalion summer camo was closer to the maroon dominate uniform some of the ultranationalists wear.
In the CoD4MW game, ultranationalists wear an afghanka, and they wear an MVD grey kamysh from camouflage clothes, this is especially visible on mabuta pants, and even though they wear french lizard camouflage, I think they wanted to make a green kamysh A lot of Russian camouflage appeared in MW3, these are the mountain flora of the paratroopers, the gray reed of the MVD, and the KKO in dlc
I love this, hope you'll be able to do mw2 russian soldier loadout, I'm still pretty sure infinityward model the old Ranger bodyarmor for the russians.
(This is only specific to Cod 4 MW. Not Post MW) I am gonna go on a whim and theorize that the reason for the inconsistency for the ultranationalists' gear is probably because Zakhaev's Ultranationalist were more of a "Paramilitary" force rather then conventional, alongside working with Al-asad's forces (Opfor) I suspect they didn't really utilize any specific doctrine of firearms or mainstream stuff, but rather used anything they had access to at the time (Which also included weapons provided from dealers or warlords) Supporting factor: All Ghillied Up/ 1 Shot 1 Kill: The story of these missions revolve around Zakhaev's presents in Pripyat Ukraine with the goal to salvage nuclear fuel rods and sell the uranium on the black market to (As Makarov put it) "Generate millions for our cause". You can see he had a small force of Russian's assisting him (The soldiers you encounter during these missions were likely Spetsnaz either working for him directly, paid off, or soldiers who supported Zakhaev's motives and assisted him in his journey and later became Ultranationalist. My supporting evidence for this is the fact Makarov was "former" Spetsnaz, which may imply that DURING these missions that took place in 1996 Makarov was likely Spetsnaz at the time when he was sitting with Yuri in the back of the UAZ when Zakhaev got shot. Which would mean all the soldiers you encounter during this mission may have been conventional Russian forces or maybe even a mix of conventional forces with Zakhaev's early paramilitary forces) Another supporting factor: (The movie "Lord of War" does carry some truth behind it in these terms) It wasn't uncommon for Russian commanders to "Off the books" sell off military assets or try to use their position to find some form of income right after the fall of the soviet union. (Which is where this essentially revolves around) Soviet doctrine is a bit different then western doctrine as many military commanders here in the US have a doctrine and guidelines in which they train US soldiers (Essentially making training a "1 size shoe fits all" kind of approach) In Russia, this is not the case... Military commanders have some freedom to exorcise how their individual units are trained, and the training soviet soldiers receive may be inconsistent with other units.) Now? What relevance does this have to Cod 4's Ultranationalist? It essentially highlights an issue with discipline amongst Russian armed forces. Where at the time, half the country wanted to see Russia restored to its glory of the soviet era. So it wouldn't surprise me if one man who worked to fulfill this duty with his connections, received support from Russian commanders to utilize their resources if it meant progress. Contradictory views: In multiplayer the Ultranationalist appear as the "Spetsnaz" team which would technically be an official branch in Russia's armed forces (This isn't exactly explained as to why, so I am unable to provide a whole lot about this) (I know everything I mentioned was probably a HUGE over analysis, but feel free to leave a comment and let me know your thoughts as well)
I think you used a bit too much camo here, to be fair. The ultranationalists used heavy CRISAT vests with bandoliers and magazine pouches, with a few foregoing this for the heavy duty magazine vests that have two rows. Btw if you want to relieve the issue of the gasmask, you can just have them fitted with basically sun blocking lenses, removing the gasmask's true funtion to make it actually useful.
The ultranationalists and the whole second Russian civil war was heavily inspired by the first and second Chechen war specially since most of the missions are in that region hell for some reason you go to hamburg Germany how that didn’t start a third world war idk but the look of them always was cool specially with the much older and scarce equipment
loving the popped collar
That fleece coat I am wearing underneath is from your "Sasha jacket", btw.

I always loved the look of the Ultranationalists, definitely chechnya vibes
Both Russia and the U.S. had a super cool aesthetic during the 80s and 90s for sure
Especially since Zakhaev was a Chechen himself

I am gonna go on a whim and theorize that the reason for the inconsistency for the ultranationalists' gear is probably because Zakhaev's Ultranationalist were more of a "Paramilitary" force rather then conventional, alongside working with Al-asad's forces (Opfor) I suspect they didn't really utilize any specific doctrine of firearms or mainstream stuff, but rather used anything they had access to at the time (Which also included weapons provided from dealers or warlords)
Supporting factor:
All Ghillied Up/ 1 Shot 1 Kill: The story of these missions revolve around Zakhaev's presents in Pripyat Ukraine with the goal to salvage nuclear fuel rods and sell the uranium on the black market to (As Makarov put it) "Generate millions for our cause". Which would mean all the soldiers you encounter during this mission may have been conventional Russian forces or maybe even a mix of conventional forces with Zakhaev's early paramilitary forces)
Another supporting factor: (The movie "Lord of War" does carry some truth behind it in these terms) It wasn't uncommon for Russian commanders to "Off the books" sell off military assets or try to use their position to find some form of income right after the fall of the soviet union. Military commanders have some freedom to exorcise how their individual units are trained, and the training soviet soldiers receive may be inconsistent with other units.)
Now? What relevance does this have to Cod 4's Ultranationalist? It essentially highlights an issue with discipline amongst Russian armed forces. Where at the time, half the country wanted to see Russia restored to its glory of the soviet era. So it wouldn't surprise me if one man who worked to fulfill this duty with his connections, received support from Russian commanders to utilize their resources if it meant progress.
Contradictory views: In multiplayer the Ultranationalist appear as the "Spetsnaz" team which would technically be an official branch in Russia's armed forces (This isn't exactly explained as to why, so I am unable to provide a whole lot about this)
(I know everything I mentioned was probably a HUGE over analysis, but feel free to leave a comment and let me know your thoughts as well)
Could we see some Metal Gear-inspired kits?
Can you do HECU next?
COD4 VS THE WORLD
THE OG OF OG’s
this was a great idea to manifest a cool faction from a beloved game. Can we get the GWOT loadouts from MW1/2?
I think you used a bit too much camo here, to be fair. The ultranationalists used heavy CRISAT vests with bandoliers and magazine pouches, with a few foregoing this for the heavy duty magazine vests that have two rows.
Btw if you want to relieve the issue of the gasmask, you can just have them fitted with basically sun blocking lenses, removing the gasmask's true funtion to make it actually useful.
why does the russian ultranationalist have western weapons btw ? throughout the cod campaigns some russians are using weapons like the mp5 and the aug
I always thought they wore Russian P51 jackets. They have the fur liner and come in almost all the camos seen in game
Can you make FIA of arma cold war assault or the north sahrani army of Arma armed assault?

The ultranationalists and the whole second Russian civil war was heavily inspired by the first and second Chechen war specially since most of the missions are in that region hell for some reason you go to hamburg Germany how that didn’t start a third world war idk but the look of them always was cool specially with the much older and scarce equipment
Dude can you please do the opfor faction from call of duty 4?
