  • democracynow.org - Commemorations are being held today to mark the 50th anniversary of the death of Pedro Albizu Campos, popularly known to many as Don Pedro, the former head of the Nationalist Party and leader of the Puerto Rican independence movement. Albizu Campos spent some 26 years in prison for organizing against U.S. colonial rule. He was born in 1891, seven years before the U.S. invaded the island. He would go on to become the first Puerto Rican to graduate from Harvard Law School. Once he returned to Puerto Rico, he dedicated the rest of his life to the independence movement, becoming president of the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party in 1930. It was a position he held until his death in 1965. In 1936, Albizu Campos was jailed along with other Nationalist leaders on conspiracy and sedition charges. His jailing led to protests across Puerto Rico. On Palm Sunday, March 21, 1937, police shot and killed 21 Puerto Ricans and wounded over 200 others taking part in a peaceful march to protest Albizu Campos’ imprisonment. The event became known as the Ponce massacre. After his eventual release, Albizu Campos was arrested again in 1950, just days after a Nationalist revolt began on October 30. Pedro Albizu Campos would spend almost the rest of his life in prison, where he repeatedly charged that he was the subject of human radiation experiments. We hear Albizu Campos in his own words and speak to three guests: Rep. José Serrano (D-NY); Nelson Denis, author of the new book, "War Against All Puerto Ricans: Revolution and Terror in America’s Colony"; and Hugo Rodríguez of the Puerto Rican Independence Party.

The sad thing is that it seems, for me , that no one talks about the educational system of Puerto Rico which is the clear example of colonialism and oppression against the Puerto Rican’s. History class in Puerto Rico starts with Columbus to Spanish colonialism to European, mainly Spanish, history to US history, but Puerto Rican history is really vague. You learn about Albizu only in la UPR (Universidad de Puerto Rico).

This is so true. Born and raised in PR until my 17th birthday, when we moved to Tampa. It wasn't until I started reading more into Puerto Rican history that I discovered this. The sad thing is that most Puerto Rican are unaware or dismissive of this educational war that we are losing, shown in the unpopularity of the PIP (Puerto Rican Independence Party) in PR.

My mother’s uncle was sent to Vietnam and they never found him, they believe he and other Puerto Rican’s were prisoners of war. My great grandmother waited by the balcony and window to see if anyone from the military will come by with any news. She died waiting. My mother remembers as a child in school the teachers yelling and crying when Former president John F. K. was murdered by (not the one they said it was) and they hid under the tables not knowing if a war was going to start. Everyone was sent home and my mother remembered teachers saying that the news were lying about who killed Kennedy.

Mrvidluv, Puerto Ricans are Puerto Ricans because they were born in Puerto Rico, the same as Americans are Americans because they were born here however, Puerto Ricans are not tainos (although many have Indian blood) as they are members of different races just as you have here in the U.S., there are white, black, mulattoes, mestizos etc.etc. and regardless of race we are all "Hispanics" by the way that's not a race but a cultural designation dreamed up by so called pundits here in the U.S.

Wasn't it pro USA Puerto Ricans who were doing these things following the orders of the USA leaders?
      Ponce Massacre
Many were chased by the police and shot or clubbed at the entrance of their houses as they tried to escape. Others were taken from their hiding places and killed. Leopold Tormes, a member of the Puerto Rico legislature, claimed to reporters that a policeman had murdered a nationalist with his bare hands.[23] Dr. José Gandara, a physician who assisted the wounded, testified that wounded people running away were shot, and that many were again wounded by the clubs and bare fists of the police.[21] No arms were found in the hands of the civilians wounded, nor on the dead ones
In the aftermath of the massacre, no police officer was convicted or sentenced to jail. No police were demoted or suspended and Governor Winship never issued a public apology.[13

Puerto Rico, considered by some to be "the world's oldest colony.
To understand Puerto Rico's current political status, it is important to know the events of the past.
Taíno Indians inhabited the island when Christopher Columbus landed in Puerto Rico in November 19, 1493. Soon after, Puerto Rico became a Spanish colony and remained under Spanish rule for over 400 years.

@@dearjohn8789 actually the USA launched an invasion of Puerto Rico on July 1898 near the end of the Spanish-American War. With few casualties and little resistance the USA was able to capture the island by August of 1898 after signing an armistice with Spain. On October of 1898, the island was given to the USA and Gen John Brooke was named the military governor. In Dec of 1898 the Treaty of Paris (1898) was signed ending the war and Puerto Rico officially became a territory or Guano island to the USA.
What the USA's history books don't tell you, is that on May of 1898 the USA lined up many warships or in the northern and eastern part of the island and bombed the cities close to the beaches which killed many citizens. Anybody can say they've studied any sort of book on the Caribbean or even taken classes. It doesn't impress me, especially with what's been coming out (both good and bad). What was suppressed, filtered by the media and lied about is emerging. The history of the Caribbean is much more complex than most people can imagine. Information comes out all the time.Like I keep mentioning, read War Against All Puerto Ricans. Otherwise you're misinformed. Just the fact that you're against reparations means you're against justice. If you do serious wrong to someone you're in trouble usually and am obligated to pay that person back return their possessions to their original state, like in an auto accident for example. If you do damage to an entire nation with its own peace and economy. Their own currency and turn their land upside down with violence and colonization, don't you think those effects which can still be felt today, should be corrected in the best way possible?I see some people choose to take the easy way out and just stick their head in the sand, pretending reality doesn't exist.

According to official records yes, however later released documents with the freedom of information act have it that he was given specially selected jailers who especially loathed him and were loyal to the Americans.
Considering that his imprisonment was a show trial being acquitted but the judge pushed for retrial with a jury selected specifically of racist anti Puerto Rican white Americans. With it being said by the judge that he had the DOJ behind him to assure his incarceration.

In Puerto Rico, historically, political parties have been created along their preference for status. In 1948, the earliest I've been able to obtain election results, the party in favor of independence received 25% of the vote. At that time, Puerto Ricans were fully in charge of their own government with all three branches, executive, legislative, and judiciary. The executive and legislative, the latter with a Senate and a House of Representatives, were elected freely on elections organized also by Puerto Ricans. Pedro Albizu Campos did not have a mandate, let alone a right to impose his will on 75% of the Puerto Rican electorate that had already expressed their political wishes democratically and freely against independence. He had no justification to take arms and explosives and respond with violence to push for independence. The insurrection of 1950, the assassination attempt on Harry Truman, and the attack on Congress in 1954 were all despicable acts of terrorism by people who had failed to convince the majority of Puerto Ricans, peacefully and through the tools of democracy, to choose independence for the island. By the year 1956, the independent movement had seen their anemic popularity lose half of their support to 12% of the electorate while the pro-statehood followers doubled to 25%. The independence movement continued losing support over the years, and today it obtains 5% or less of the vote.
