We have long resisted getting an Echo. We couldn't run new wiring (which would have been expensive if we could), so we got our first Echo which completely solved our problem for about $40 (Echo Dot and smart plug). We just ask Alexa to turn on/off that light. Heartily recommend it to solve this kind of conundrum!

I have many questions with this set up. What if the power goes? Do you have to reset all your appliances? Will the main switch always be on? Well that not consume electricity? Also can you ask Alexa to set a time frame on which it should on and off the water heater? Also can I ask Alexa to start the air conditioner on 16 temperature? Putting an Echo device doesn't make your home smart, rather it is just a mere replacement of turning on and off the switches using voice with some basic Alexa routines. A smart home should automatically control itself based on the environment and the sensors.
