To illustrate what kind of company Buck is, i know a Vietnam Veteran of the 101st, who had a Buck 120 he bought before deployment. The stitching started to rot in the intense heat & humidity of the jungle. He wrote a letter to Buck, and very quickly received a new sheath stitched with fishing line, which wouldn't rot, along with a note from Chuck Buck! Last year, my well worn 110 needed some work, and they made it like new, and returned it within 3 weeks. Great company, Great service.
Bought mine at Wal-mart for 19.99+tax. Love it. I some how bent the tip, sent it to buck and they sent me a new one with a leather sheath..gotta love buck.
My 119 was made between 1972 and 1974 in 440C stainless. Bought it and a 112 from a fellow airman in 1977, It was next to impossible to sharpen. Sent it back to the factory where they sharpened and polished it to look just like this new blade. Love the 119!
Buck makes the best value knives around, right here in the USA. With the Bos heat treat, 420HC acts more like good AUS-8, or even like a stainless 5160. While the Codura sheath stays drier, Buck includes some really nice leather sheaths with their knives, at very low prices. The 119 is an absolute classic knife, and belongs in every collections. It is still a 1st class hunting knife and a great camping blade.
Ha ha that's what happen to me not really a knife guy but knew about this one, saw it for 40$ and was just beautiful to me, I'm planning a hunting trip and going camping soon so I'm excited and glad this is an awesome knife, vary sharp by the way
i have a much the same knife. . well its a buck 119 but its a leather sheeth and they put something on the blade that makes it not shiny its sick. i use it for hunting and combat/duety blade its sick. its a GREAT hand to hand knife its a fast blade
I suspect the 'buttcap' or pommel is threaded on. Either that or the (threaded)tang is held on with a barrel nut The tang may be threaded, however it is very common to weld on studding/treaded rod to save time and money. The Spanish & Italians do that and I believe Gil Hibben did that for hir R III bowie. Shouldn't make a major difference.
i love this knife. i have been using mine non stop in the woods for over and year and it still looks brand new and is still just as sharp as the day i got it.
I just bought this knife today at Wal Mart for $39... Haven't used it for any real purpose yet, but it looks very nice and came out of the package razor sharp.... Much sharper than most knives that I've bought are from the factory.
The pommel is pinned from the side. You can actually see the pin on some older knives due to difference in the type of aluminum used for the pin, on newer knives you have to make an effort to look for it but sometimes it is discernible as move the pommel on light. This is a very valid method also used on many other knives like the traditional style Ka-Bar, Ontario and Camillus knives issued to the Marines
I have this knife. I absolutely love it. I carry it everyday. I've wanted one for a long time and my wife got it for me as a gift last year. Hell of a knife, dependable, holds a great edge and doesn't break the bank.
I've had mine for 30 years. I am a big fan of Buck sheath knives. Yes it is full tang, or an overmoulded tang. The "blood" groove nothing more then a Fuller to lighten up the knife. Is it a tactical knife, in a pinch it could be. Is it a good survival knife, of course. Would I process wood with it, NO. But I would never batton or chop wood with any knife. Thats what a axe or saw is for. But this is a great knife that has been around for at least 40+ years.
I suppose you could, but I'd be afraid of taking so much metal off the point you would weaken the tip. Also, the handle is made out of the same stuff that pool balls are made out of.
In 1990 or so, on my way out to the west desert to shot, I stopped by a K-mart to get some ammo. They had the 119 special on sale with a nice leather sheath. I couldn't resist. It has been my favorite camp knife every since.
Awesome knife, my dad still carries one in his truck tucked beside the seat for easy access. Dressed out many deer and hogs with this knife in conjunction with a Buck 110, for the money the 119 is a great choice!
Usually the so called "blood groves" especially with kitchen knives prevent a vacume effect like when slicing meat or fruits. It allows the slice to fall off the blade by creating an air pocket underneath. Great video as always. *****
hahaha british english funny stuff mate, great knife had mine for years rarely use it. it was a gift and the steel of the blade always felt brittle to me and I've read many reviews saying it breaks under pry tests and the such. they usually cost a lot more than the dude on here says but mb at walmart.. you will see this knife everywhere from hollywood to the deer hunter's belt if you are a man and an american you should have one...or maybe two.
If you think about it, you could draw it pretty quickly if you put it upside down on the left side of your lbe and you can just stick a soldering iron through the plastic/nylon on the bottom and it works as a drain hole
Valid, perhaps. Still a narrowed tang. spektek9 seemed to think it was full tang. Thank you for providing this useful information for all the readers! Merry Christmas sir!
Is the spine squared off (ie- when you move your thumb across the back of the knife do you feel a drag)? I am inquiry because I'm curious as to whether or not it'll strike a good spark on Firesteel.
We still got the buck 110 my dad found in alaska some 30 years ago; never carried it much, but it makes a great workshop knife. OH,and if I had to cut down a sequoia, I'd need a ka-bar at least.
have had two of these knives for over ten years, and just to echo the edge retention and rust resistance... lightweight versatile blade. High Value Blade!
I just bought this knife off of Cabela's for $50. I think its quite a nice knife especially for the price. Pros: Real Leather sheath. (I guess Nutnfancy got a nylon one) Good looking. Good price. Made in the USA. Cons: None, Tho I have heard some reviews about how people who have chopped wood with it and having it break. but usually 5 star reviews. All in all, A great knife.
We have it here in Saudi Arabia for 225 Riyals thats around 60USD but it comes with leather sheath as u said they really make a good sheath. I will buy it thanks for the good review dude.
I've used this knife for years, camping, skinning, farm work, butchering, chopping, great high-value knife. keep up the great vids nutin!! Also would LOVE a review on the gerber F.A.S.T draw, another high value folder that souls fit perfectly in ur best folders under $40 series.
I just got this knife today at walmart myself :P I love bowe style knifes too and this one i just had to have. just the look of the knife screams "buy me" and so many other things.
+Timothy Ryan Fisher I'm in that same boat. I have a few folders and my prized Ka-Bar USMC. I think this will be my second purchase as well. Next up will be the Fallkniven A1 at a pricey $200...
Wal-Mart is able to sell these knives as well as a lot of other products cheaper due to volume sales. As the Buck rep states, the company refuses to lower the quality of the product for any retailer and that definitelly applies to the knife itself but not the scabbard. Even the leather scabbard is now made in Mexico, as marked on the sticker in the plastic liner but the quality is still there somewhat.
I'm a beginner blade collector (as in just starting to make the jump to quality knives and swords instead of cheap wall-hangers), and I got this as my first functional fixed blade. I've gotta say, I absolutely love it. Good quality steel from what I can tell, great cutting ability, and in my opinion, a great looking knife. To boot, mine came with a wood-reinforced leather sheath, which just adds to the appeal for me. Great review by the way :)
@nutnfancy I got this knife a while back. It was the 119 "pro gold". I was gutting a deer last winter in some chilly weather (-20°F) and I had forgotten my hatchet to chop through the pelvic bone on the deer. I used this knife knowing it wasn't the tool for the job, but hoping it would hold up better than it did. The blade chipped in 2 small spots and it made a lot of waves in the edge. Is this normal or should I get a different knife?
The WM 119 specials are indeed made in the USA. But the nylon sheaths are imported. I got mine at WM for $35. I like the knife especially for the price. I would rather have the leather sheath because i do a lot of hiking and the knife rattles around in the plastic insert and makes some noise which i find annoying. I'll probably get the leather sheath atsome point.
@nutnfancy - BTW the false edge on top of the Bowie ("Boo E") blade design is for maximum penetration into the Cerebellum of vertebrates. Like you said, it's a very versatile design! :)
Blood groove? PFT Listen up. There is NO such thing as a "blood groove" That is a fuller and it serves two purposes. To lighten the blade and to strengthen the blade.
I actually just bought this knife and it's actually on the packaging called it a "blood groove", so I did a google search on this topic and found the blood groove has nothing to do with actual blood. You are correct, but the tool used to create this groove is called a Fuller. The groove is often called many different things even "blood gutters". - The More You Know
Funny, I have several 119's and none of them advertise a "blood groove" because that is something a stupid teenager made up. If I did see a knife advertising a blood groove I would not buy it because it shows you how much they don't know about knives....
Dude, the blood groove not only lightens the blade (slightly) its primary function is to stiffen the blade. Ask Fitzen, he'll tell you better than I can. I've had a 119 since I was 13! It's pretty good, but I really want to get a Kabar USMC.
@fretfeeler I KNOW they make leather sheaths, but it doesnt matter if you cant buy them at walmart. And if you've actually been in the rain with cordura, nylon or whatever, you would know it doesnt dry out that quickly, especially when the water is to the point where its in your sheath.
I have used this knife somewhat abusively, one day I was chopping at a small 1 inch in diameter oak sapling, then a 1 inch long piece of steel flew off the knife, I love this knife, but the 440 steel kills the durability but it awesome on rust resistance
Not a fan of the sheath but I do love this knife! I use a Recon Tanto for my primary on my P/C or Chest Rig but this is my go to for skinning or other camping type needs. With all your recent knife reviews Fance you still feel the same way about this knife now as you did in 2008?
I think because its from Walmart and clamed packed u will get the cheaper nylon sheath to keep costs down. I believe any other sporting goods store when it comes in the yellow box would contain leather sheath. Don't quote me though.
i just got a buck 119 from scheels and it has a small crack on on side i don't think it will break the point off but i don't want it to break when i need it so my question is can i return it to scheels or do i have to send it in to BUCK and if i send it in do i have to pay for postage.
No problem dude. You have always posted such great comments to TNP and much appreciated. LIGHTINGELVIS is squared away guys. As far as my answer goes to the question I think I'll pass here to keep the knife topic focused though. Thanks!
Yes the symbols represent year of manufacture. You can google manufacturing dates of Buck knives to find out more about it. I have one with an inverted U that was made in 1993 if I remember well. Great knife. Hard to sharpen though...
@Fretfeeler I was in the infantry as well and was never issued a knife. Although my PL did give me a Hissatsu saying its the only knife you should ever trust to effeciently destroy the enemy. So kinda issued?
My uncle gave me a 119 but it doesn't have the sharp point like this one it has a larger belly and one know if it came like that or if my uncle put his own edge on it
I know that leather sheaths aren't better, but the only reason most nylon sheaths repel water is because of the plastic insert. I may be wrong, but the only sheaths that completely repel water are kydex.
Do you mean the general model has been discontinued? Damn. Somebody stole mine years ago and I haven't gotten around to getting another. You know if their still available?
I found this knife in my brothers old stuff and thought it was just a cheap knife like the rest of his "collection" . But little did I know it was a quality knife.
Anyway their special is a lot better quality than some of their other knives. I was a BUCK guy and still am for many years but they have been failing lately with their other crap, I think I'm going to purchase a Benchmade D2 steel "Bone Collector" next, with a guthook (buck style, go figure).
i have a 119 special aswell for some time now and i busted my tip, grinded a new 1 on it and its oke again, sort of a down side i got a leather sheath and its loud, rattles and makes lot of noise in it,and its kinda heavy for me anyway but i am looking to upgrade it. might look at RAT or Coldsteel who knows.
The fuller does make the blade slightly lighter, and it's somewhat aesthetically pleasing, but I believe the main purpose to be strengthening the blade. I'm not an expert, it's just what I've read online - do some research on your own on this interesting topic (of course I, like many people, originally thought that it was to better allow blood flow from a stab wound)
@Fretfeeler And yes, Buck will replace damaged blades as long as there is an adequate reason. Striking the knife against rebar will void the warranty for instance. Just create a belivable story if it wasnt a major malfunction due to normal use.
@nickpprimm - Why would you need a drain hole with a nylon sheath, when nylon dries out in a few minutes and is water repellent to begin with? This knife is unaffected by water unless you throw it in the ocean and forget it. The leather sheath that you get in places other than WAL*MART also has a drain hole, by the way. Think about it.
@stealthbeast The WM in Milford sells Buck 119 & 110 as well as as some others. They also sell Gerber, lall in a glass case so you have to get store help.
@nickpprimm Nylon, being made of synthetic materials, is in itself "water resistant". Treated leather with mink oil for example, will repel water as good as plastic but will not be waterproof.
@Fretfeeler Yeah metaluragy is hard to master, even the masters have trouble. The trouble with production knives is the quality of steel. If the knife is lets say .09 carbon, it will require a different heat treatment than a .10 carbon blade. Its pretty much a craps shoot with production blades unless it is supervised with a highly trained expert from slab (when it comes in from the foundry) to finished product. You can have a little leeway as far as quality goes (very good - excellent),
To illustrate what kind of company Buck is, i know a Vietnam Veteran of the 101st, who had a Buck 120 he bought before deployment. The stitching started to rot in the intense heat & humidity of the jungle. That's awesome! Try some ceramic, or diamond sharpeners! Works great on harder steels!
I've got a buck 120 from some time in the 80's, I think 88.
It's a solid knife, I love it.
They are my favorite! Made to last!
this knife is very scary looking, the shine off the hilt even sends off a warning, gotten me outta trouble before
Buck knives are made here in Idaho and are top quality for the price, Love my 119 special.

This knife is a legend that hopefully will never die!
Yeah my dad has one from the 60s and Ive used it a couple and is still perfect. Deer hates that knife!

i got that exact same knife at wal-mart for $57.71 but so worth the money.
I just bought this knife today at Wal Mart for $39... Haven't used it for any real purpose yet, but it looks very nice and came out of the package razor sharp.... Much sharper than most knives that I've bought are from the factory.

All the 119s I've seen (and own) came with a leather sheath.
I miss leather! I am not a big fan of nylon sheaths!
buck 119 for the win
I've had mine for 30 years. I am a big fan of Buck sheath knives. Yes it is full tang, or an overmoulded tang. The "blood" groove nothing more then a Fuller to lighten up the knife. ty for telling me its full tang just got it for x-mes haha ty
the top looks like it could be sharpen can you ??
I suppose you could, but I'd be afraid of taking so much metal off the point you would weaken the tip. Also, the handle is made out of the same stuff that pool balls are made out of.
agh nice thanks i was wondering why that material felt so familiar lol. Anyways i might or might not who knows lol
Full tang, that awesome! I had one before, gave it to a friend. I miss it! Going to get another
In 1990 or so, on my way out to the west desert to shot, I stopped by a K-mart to get some ammo. They had the 119 special on sale with a nice leather sheath. I couldn't resist. It has been my favorite camp knife every since.
This is the first knife I ever bought myself. Love it. There maybe many better knives it there but I still carry this one from time to time.
I love this knife, I modded my sheath, and rigged it up to my molle vest, this thing never dulls!
Awesome knife, my dad still carries one in his truck tucked beside the seat for easy access. Dressed out many deer and hogs with this knife in conjunction with a Buck 110, for the money the 119 is a great choice!

Got mine from Wal-Mart for $40. I'd consider it the best Knife I've ever had. Even better than the USMC Ka-Bar in my opinion.
New TNP'er here. Great video Nutn. I have owned this knife for four years and it does great for me in the deer woods.
hahaha british english funny stuff mate, great knife had mine for years rarely use it.
it was a gift and the steel of the blade always felt brittle to me and I've read many reviews saying it breaks under pry tests and the such.
they usually cost a lot more than the dude on here says but mb at walmart..
you will see this knife everywhere from hollywood to the deer hunter's belt if you are a man and an american you should have one...or maybe two.

Valid, perhaps. Still a narrowed tang. spektek9 seemed to think it was full tang. Thank you for providing this useful information for all the readers! Merry Christmas sir!
This knife was given to me by my father. I will keep it forever for just that reason.
I use to carry this every day, till I realized It's larger than the legal limit in texas
Is the spine squared off (ie- when you move your thumb across the back of the knife do you feel a drag)?
I am inquiry because I'm curious as to whether or not it'll strike a good spark on Firesteel.
I think that the 119 and kabar usmc are two of the most popular knives ever
in canada they all seem to come with black leather sheaths my buck 119 special is a favourite and a classic
Pros:
Real Leather sheath. (I guess Nutnfancy got a nylon one)
Good looking.
Good price.
Made in the USA.
Cons:
None, Tho I have heard some reviews about how people who have chopped wood with it and having it break. but usually 5 star reviews.
All in all, A great knife.
One last thing. The leather sheath has a smaller belt loop.
We have it here in Saudi Arabia for 225 Riyals thats around 60USD but it comes with leather sheath as u said they really make a good sheath. I will buy it thanks for the good review dude.
great video. good description of the knife. I have the buck 120 and I love it. It was my grandfathers.
I've used this knife for years, camping, skinning, farm work, butchering, chopping, great high-value knife. keep up the great vids nutin!! Also would LOVE a review on the gerber F.A.S.T draw, another high value folder that souls fit perfectly in ur best folders under $40 series.

You should do a review on the Buck 110 Hunter. I am curious as to see what your opinions on it are.
When I decided to start collecting knives this was the second one I bought. I love this knife. The sheath sucks, I have the nylon.

Just an amazing knife and it's history, with Les Stroud and th scream movies along with Bucks most selling knife, it's worth it.
The finger guard on my 100 year buck 119 is loose is this how it come from factory or is it common for this to happen? Thanks
it shouldn't be like that get a hold of Buck, they will take care of you they really are a great company.
do you like this more than the fällkniven a1? please answer
Dude, the blood groove not only lightens the blade (slightly) its primary function is to stiffen the blade. Ask Fitzen, he'll tell you better than I can.

Got one of these w/ black leather sheath at Big 5 today. Sale ends today, was supposed to be 30% off but somehow I got 50%. $25+tax, killer deal!
In My Opinion One Of The Best Knives For Under $100 Along With A Kabar
Probably the best balanced hunting knife there is!
Is it good for wood carving? how about is it full tang?
Yes the symbols represent year of manufacture. You can google manufacturing dates of Buck knives to find out more about it. I have one with an inverted U that was made in 1993 if I remember well. Great knife. Hard to sharpen though...

the 102 woodsman is a great hunting knife...the 119 is alittle to big. love the US made buck knives!

I found this knife in my brothers old stuff and thought it was just a cheap knife like the rest of his "collection" . But little did I know it was a quality knife.
I snapped mine in half cause i used it so much i dont know if they have a warranty or something but i hope they do.
Is this knife full tang? I really am looking for another decent FULL TANG fixed blade to add to my collection.
DUDE!!! You could sell water to a drowning man! I seriously had a hard time waiting till the end of your vid! I'm off to Wal-Mart!
Oops they do, sorry, i was quick 2 jump, its called the general right? i think its been discontinued...
Mine had a really nice waxed leather sheathe, and the gaurd and pommel were nickel.
I carried a Buck 120 in the 70s and I used lemon juice to dull the finish.

Great video! But is this knife full tang?
Jake St. Amand yes.
I have had this knife for 15-20 years. No rust whatsoever. incredible for 440 (420?).
It is amazing that you can buy a knife this incredible that is made in the U.S. and only costs $39.95. Go to Walmart and buy one now!
Yup, you got ripped at your Canadian Tire. I bought my 119 at my local Canadian Tire for under $60. And that was a few years ago.
I got this at walmart, dropped it and now the blade is loose. im guessing it isnt full tang but im not sure
119 Special? Hm, it looks cool I like it! :)
i got one at canadian tire with a leather sheath, it takes a great edge
