This track is beautiful. It fits so well with the scene in the movie, and the events that followed the kiss. It also holds a faint sadness, representing the distance that will now seperate them
I just can't use words to describe how make me feel this movie. It's all about let go and grow up... but at least you have the memory of your real first true love and it would make you smile no matter what.
Many claimed this movie had a sad ending because the last scene before the credits was too loose for interpretation. However I'd consider it a uplifting yet hanging ending. The last scene when "One more chance" was banging the atmosphere with a few recaps and the trains left a slight detail that is metaphorically uplifting. Just when the trains crossed the line and Akari disappeared, Tohno smiled and carried on. This seemed like he actually moved on from his trance, and his life is anew.
That we could not be together forever after this... was a fact I clearly grasped. The vast lives we had ahead of us... the boundless amount of time which laid unavoidably stretched out in front of us...
Let's not Forget about the letters they were going to give each other the day they kissed. Takaki lost His and Akari felt the moment so much she ended up forgetting about it (And so did Takaki, he probably wouldn't have given her the letter for this reason). Perhaps, those letters would have been the key to kindle their interest and start texting each other. Maybe it'd would have been a reminder of the love they both will never end up losing completely. Yeah my eyes are teary.
"At that moment, I felt like I understood things like the existence of eternity, the heart and the soul! I felt as though we had shared all the experiences of my thirteen years, and the next moment...I became unbearably sad! Sad because I didn't know what to do with her warmth against me, or what to do with that soul, or how long I should hold onto them. I also came to the realization that we would not be able to stay together. The overwhelming weight of our lives to come, and the uncertainty of time hung over us.But soon, all my fears began to melt away, leaving only Akari's soft lips on mine. That night, we stayed in a tiny shack by the corner of the field. Wrapped up in an old blanket, we talked all night, until finally we fell asleep. The next morning when the train started, I got ready to leave, and there...Akari and I said goodbye!"
We, who were small and sickly at the time, preferred the library over the playground. And because of this, we were teased by our classmates. But when we were together, we didn't seem to affected by those things... T-T It brings it all back!
When you spot that at 1:34, when they kiss and the music goes to a more energetic rythm, it's just notes from the Song "One more time" at the end of the music, foreshadowing that this kiss and this last meet is the last thing they shared and what hurt him so many years....

I hope I don't sound like a heartless monster when I say this, but I didn't get impacted by this film as I wish I did. I didn't end up crying and I didnt need to sit in silence for a few minutes to regain my mental stability. I realize this movie takes a lot of maturity and understanding to experience the full emotion, which I'm too young for. I learned that in life no matter who you begin your life with, you'll slowly drift apart and meet new people. You may keep some, but you'll always be moving on. That's life. A Hollywood ending would have completely ruined this film... ruined the entire POINT of this film in fact. If you can't appreciate this film in it's present form then I'd say you have no idea what it is like to have truly loved and then lost. And IMO that is sadder yet.
they'd have made it into a shitey romantic comedy with like, the point where everything goes wrong, followed by the 20 minutes of awkwardness until everything was HAPPY ENDING. woo.
I felt the exact same way! I used to hate the ending, but then someone told me that if anything, it was a very realistic portrayal of real life. And that made me realize how true that was, and I finally understood the ending.
He stole the words outta my mouth!, but ya, i love how even a slight change in melody of the same song, can make it something beautiful in its own ^^. Good movie.
Your comment made me realize how brilliantly the ending of 5 cm/s emulates the feeling of a break-up. First you hate it but with time you come to accept it and realize it was the best way. And even when it ended the way it did,you are left with the good memories.
Perhaps, Shinkai made this film as a way of learning how to let go of the things that he had in the days of his youth. This is just an observation since I could see the trend in his other films: Beyond the clouds the Promised Place, 5 centimeters per second, Voices of a distant star and even his latest one: Children who chased lost voices. Maybe, he yearned for the days of simplicity like that.
And right then it felt like I finally understood where everything was, eternity, the heart , the soul. It was like I was sharing every experience I’d ever had in my past 13 years. And then, the next moment, I became unbearably sad. I didn’t know what to do with these feeling. Her warmth, her soul. How was I supposed to treat them? That, I did not know. Then right then, I clearly understood that we would never be together. Our lives not yet fully realized, the vast expanse of time. They lay before us and there was nothing we could do. But then, all my worries, all my doubt, started melting away. All that was left were Akari’s soft lips on mine.
