Wow! Love the video. It takes me right back there. I got my stingray bicycle in the late sixties. A red three speed. What a great time to grow up. Even the bicycles were cool.
I loved the 70's with all the ape hanger bars, sissy bars, and the banana seats. I remember how everyone wanted that chopper look and some guys went as far as cutting off the lowers from other forks, stacking the pieces, and then welding them together.
I did exactly that, ground em down nice and painted em. Shit yeh we did that, I had one bike that had 8 sets with the last one flipped over, it was dangerous as hell but it looked cool, for an 8 year old in 74’ lol
You were big time to have a welder for them. We had a drill and 2 smaller bolts to attach extra forks. To cool though to here from others we did the same things in our day with no internet or cell phones to spread the word on tricking things. Surely spawned a lot of later careers for the kids that upgraded their own toys.
I remember trash picking parts of old bikes to build something to ride. We couldn't afford a new bike , but we had the most unusual bikes around. Long forks up front, ducked tape seats, funky handle bard. I wish we had pic to post.
Had a 5spd Schwinn w/ the banana seat and tall sissy-bar, the got my older “brother from a different mother”’s Raleigh Chopper bike after he got his Honda 250cc enduro… I then got the 250cc enduro when at age 16, he got his 72 corvette
Just subscribe; 7/12/2021. Great looking bikes…..but my dad worked at a lumber yard and mom was the best at keeping up even with her arthritis. My bike was extended front forks using cut off pieces from another set of forks slid on then drilled and bolted front caliper break bracket from a flattened piece of copper tubing, handle bars were bent in, banana seat was set back using 3/4” water pipe and a 90 elbow, tall sissy bar, the three speed shifter was mounted on the down tube of the seat pipe.had a large knobby rear tire, skinny front tire. As I got older I switched to 10 speed road bike. My father told me when he rolled the home made chopper out to the curb on garbage day it was gone before he got back in the kitchen. I guess I got this fabricating tinkering bug from my father and my son and daughter have it too, hopefully the grandkids have it too. Thanks, stay safe.
I had half of those bikes growing up. Every summer we were building a different bike. I recently had the good fortune of finding a near mint condition Raleigh Rodeo 3+2 at a garage sale. The tires were dry rotted but had no wear on them. Everything was amazing. Got it for $25. I'll prolly be buried with that thing.
So many memories. Wow. I had the Eliminator We would cut the front forks off a bike then push them on to our bikes to make a chopper. . The best of time
When I kinda out grew my Sting Ray I found an set hollow tube front forks off another bike and cut them off and hammered them on my Sting Ray and after a little grinding and some Bondo I had an awesome extended forks …hey I was 12 years old that was the limit of my abilities at that point…😂😂😂😂
I had a Schwinn stingray and ordered a chopper fork from the Sears & Roebuck Catalog… I also had a sissy bar in the back…… I have to admit it was a much simpler time, and the music was bad ass🤙🏽👊🏽🤘🏽
I remember guys would cut the front fork from one bike and sleeve it over the fork and nut and bolt it on their primary bike to make an extended chopper along with the banana seat and the high sissy bars that had a cushion on it for your head
i had the yellow chopper back in 1976 .... it was a hand me down in mint cond, i wish i had it now. the best bikes where made in the 60's & 70's those were the days !
I got a matel corporation vrroom bike 1964 model that's all chrome with racing red stripped fenders. A 20 inch frame. It's missing the toy motor on it that made it sound like a motorcycle engine. Has shocks on back of seat. The seat is shaped like a motorcycle seat. It's a cool looking bicycle though.
I remember hacksawing off the front forks of my sister’s bicycle to create cheap long forks for my stingray. The original fork ends fit nicely inside the hollow new forks. Looked kind of cool, but… tricky to ride… and sister not happy
I had a purple Huffy. Purple metal flake Banana seat. HIgh handle bars. Man I loved that bike. Paid $44 for it. Hummm....I suppose I got it around 1973. I remember some of these. I know someone that had the Schwinn with the shifter. Rode it once.
A refreshing diversion of silliness. I am always amazed at the willingness to crush the sacrum and coccyx with those skinny rail ‘seats’ for the ‘looks cool’ payoff.
Anyone remember the home made "high" bikes? Would take frames from 2 or more bikes, Cut them apart and then weld them back together into one very tall or long bike. Handled like crap, ......... but looked cool......
Called them sky bikes. Take a 26 inch frame turn it upside down, put 20 inch forks on it. Long pipes for seats and steering. Usually tried to find a small steering whell from go cart or lawn mower.
One of my favorite bikes that I had was the Orange Krate with the 5 speed slick on the back and the little wheel on the front yeah I thought I was the cool kid on the block 🤘🤙
thats what im doing now for my friends. we design a frame together and i weld it up. we have races in empty parking lots around cones and its some good fun
A friend of mine had #,8 think is was made by huffy not sure but is wasn't as good as my home made chopper from hell man I had some time and cheddar in that bike
None of those bikes held a candle to the Western Flyer I had. Medium dark green metalic paint, high back sissy bar, banana seat with racing stripe, custom ape hanger wide handle bars, rear cheata slick, 2 rearview mirrors, speedo, headlight, taillight w/ brakelight, turnsignals, & custom turned forks
@@WindRider2 Unfortunately I sold the bike in the late 70's. I did have some pictures of it, but they are in N.C, I am in W.V. But damn it was a good looking bike. It won a couple of small shows around my area back in the day
Ah back in the days of making your own chopper bikes with no idea of actually how to set up the geometry of the steering. Then to add to the fun you would make a ramp with some plywood and cinder blocks .
Wow! Love the video. It takes me right back there. I got my stingray bicycle in the late sixties.

We would replace the whole fork using chrome touring bike (10-speed) forks. Not as flashy, but the bike still rode well.
You were big time to have a welder for them. We had a drill and 2 smaller bolts to attach extra forks. To cool though to here from others we did the same things in our day with no internet or cell phones to spread the word on tricking things. Yea, I remember them doing that.
We just got a hack saw and cut forks off an old bike and just hammered them on and hoped they stayed.
I remember trash picking parts of old bikes to build something to ride. We couldn't afford a new bike , but we had the most unusual bikes around. Long forks up front, ducked tape seats, funky handle bard. I wish we had pic to post.
Word we use to go to the dump with a few inner tubes and some vice grips and ride something out of there

Bring back the banana seat! It never made your sack go numb like the bike seats of today!
Preach it my man!
yep that's what I had in the 70s except the front forks, I hammered an extra set to the existing one
I did the exact same thing.
me too , it sure sucked when u wheelied an tha dam tire an forks would fall off ! we never had a welder
@@rsmith3033 Ha ha Exactly!

I thank the low riders out there for keeping these bikes in our hearts minds and hands!

I have that exact bike right now
I had the Eliminator Mark Z in yellow
Great video, I gotta put an emergency brake on my bike.....
This is before BMX bikes and I was forever bending rims
'
favor old time schwinn bicycles were the best top bikes in 1970's
I had one as a kid took a shiter hanging low in a turn, if I remember right the crank comes low to the ground.
I always as kid the appollo bike but never got one till i was in my 50s
We made our own chopper bikes. Our Dad was a welder we just cut it up and he would weld it the way we asked him.
thats what im doing now for my friends. we design a frame together and i weld it up. we have races in empty parking lots around cones and its some good fun

I was still on a banana seat when everyone else was on a bmx. And jumping the same jumps
