Great little Sunday Breakfast with Peter video, used to always get me when my elms would drop leaves at totally different times but since watching one of your previous videos I gave up worrying and started hardening them up protected but still outdoors and they are doing much better now.

I have found that ficus tend to drop leaves in response to nearly any change. By panicking you can end up killing them through perpetually moving them all over trying to make them happy.
It also really goes to show how much variation there is between individual plants. I've never had any noteworthy shedding of leaves from my ficus (all of which are propagated from 3 or 4 trees), with the rare exception of one drying out or needing fertilizer.

Thank you so much. I WAS panicking! Not so much now. I haven’t an unseated area in my house, have a Chinese elm and though other sources said leaves fall from over watering I felt my tree was shedding from under watering. I watered it very well and it has stabilised. But I was scared I had killed it anyway. Now I don’t think so and will get a tray so it gets more moisture. There is not a light place in my entire house that has not got a connecting radiator under it. So I am going to play off moving it somewhat further from the window to a less dry place and see how it goes. Also letting any leaf fall remain on the soil surface to deter evaporation. This has made my day because with the detail you gave I know what is happening. Such a great explanation and with such a wide range of detail.

Thank you very much! I was beginning to worry, as my new Ficus Ginseng (my first "bonsai") was shedding leaves. Thanks to your videos, which are a joy to watch, I have learned where in my room to put it and what else it needs in order to be well.
However, now that it gets more light, warmth and I spray water on it regularly, I am already seeing growth. Once again, I am worried that I might mess up the seasonal rhythm of the plant.

I had such a panic when my bonsai was loosing its leaves, I think it's a elm had it for 4 years now , I panicked so much that I literally chopped all the old roots down trimmed them up, thinking , maybe it's not getting water, the roots had over grown,aybe needs new soil, gave it new soil , and chopped off a couple of dead branches. It doesn't like me any more. But I'm sure in the spring new branches will begin to grow and new leaves are already shooting so . Fingers crossed, it's like you said, just experimenting and learning what works for your tree's

Yep, they're trees, doing what trees do at this time of year, in our part of the world, nothing to fret about, this is the way.
All my ficus alive in a exterior cristal room like Peter's when I returned to Madrid from Barcelona. We got down to 3°/-12° in Madrid for 11 days. I even left 2 windows opened 2cm to avoid sun heating the room to much. I can't believe they did it all alone and with such a cold weather. This cristal rooms are cool. Outside, 2 years Chinese Elm cuttings are fine, even after being under snow 11 days. Unexpected in Madrid.

i do see exactly this on my Indoor Ficus (which I keep indoors in winter) and on my Chinese elm (which I keep in a cold greenhouse at about 0-5 Celsius). Due to your advice, I am not worried.

My Chinese elm is completely covered with new shoots and it's mid January... Strange, but I'm glad to know it's normal.

@@peterchan3100 I purchased the hard copy so yes quite expensive. However I don’t believe you can put a price on this amount of exceptional knowledge on Bonsai, well worth the purchase my friend !
My condolences for your friend but that story about buddha reaching enlightenment meditating against a ficus is partly what drew me towards bonsai or ficus specifically in a spiritual sense. Its amazing that you were able to get a cutting and your friends legacy lives on with the tree. I think its about time for me to find a quality ficus or start my own from cuttings of a not so quality ficus. Cheers Peter and thanks for another informative video.

Jade tree (as many other Crassula sp.) can withstand much colder temperature, down to 5° or even less at the limit of freezing, without any great damage
I was shocked when I saw that blue atlas cedar cost $300, but amazed that the elm weighs 150 lbs. It looks so little!

I have the same black trays that you use! They are pretty much the standard.
My bonsai bougainvilleas are blooming right now - the pale orange ones. They are in a window with lots of sun most of the day and then have a light bar to one side that is on 24/7. Guess which side is blooming? The ones closest to the light bar! I may experiment by exchanging a light pink or dark pink bonsai bougainvillea with that one and see if it starts blooming! I have a dark pink one that was a cutting from place in South Texas and it's not blooming yet. I can hardly wait! There are white and yellow bougainvilleas here in the Dallas/Fort Worth area at the hardware stores like Lowe's and Home Depot. They are very affordable in fall when they are marking things down to clearance and filled a shopping cart with them this year, cut them back hard for bonsai, and they are doing great. I think there are a dozen on my shelves now.

@@peterchan3100 Above freezing most of the time (right now, this Winter). This week will be warmer! We still have chance of freezing temps in another week. I'm in the Dallas/Fort Worth area of Texas, USA.
I've seen jade trees in San Francisco growing outside, and the temperatures there do go below 0°C. But it might have been a different variety. And the temperature rises during the day to about 20°. The Lemon tree looks a bit unhappy.
My ficus have the yellow drop leaf thing when the weather cools off. They got a little "bite" from a sudden temperature drop this year when I left them out one day too long and the new leaves on the end turned brown and died back. But they are hardy, and have recovered. I expect the yellow leaves to drop off - they are messy since I keep them inside! But in the Spring I put them back outside and they grow vigorously. I have more air layered Ficus cuttings than I have room for now, so they are packed tightly in some containers. Still haven't found good pots for them. May have to special order.
You have a wonderful home and a wonderful collection of Bonsai, as a complete newbie to the art of caring for Bonsai I thank you and cannot express my gratitude enough for these informative videos. It makes sense that a bonsai in a dry location would shed leaves. The leaves create more surface area and allow the plant to lose moisture more quickly. If the plant sheds its leaves it has less area to lose moisture from.

Saved me a lot of grief. Bought a calamansi tree a few months ago and it almost immediately began shedding, thought for a long time I ruined it

Carmona can be very tricky - so be careful - They are difficult indoor bonsai in Europe where we live.

aww, mine died this winter from being too close to a radiator I think. outside the heating season it only needed watering every few days. now it's like at least two times a day before the soil gets too dry. all my windows have a radiator under them...
I have an ilex crenata that has dropped almost all of its leaves, but the cambium is bright green, so we'll see what happens in the spring!

How do you avoid root rot when keeping the soil always moist? Especially on indoor plants. I'm always deathly afraid of root rot as it seems the most common cause of illness for most indoor plants.
You need Drainage soil like Akadama so that the roots can "breathe

My ficus (rétusa) are currently in my small no heated greenhouse ( I live close to Paris France) and it support easily 3 or 5°c as minimum without any damage or leaves drops. Then I put it outside in my garden as of April till October end. Retusa is very strong. Do you agree? have a wonderful and healthy 2021 year Peter!

I’ve experienced a difference between variegated and regular plants of the same species as well. Didn’t think of it until now... but is it possible that photosynthesis in a plant with variegated leaves is not as efficient making the plant drop leaves earlier like in the two varieties you show in the conservatory? Thanks for another wonderful video!
I am not sure about that but it seems that variegated plants tend to be a bit weaker generally

As always very informative. I have a question. I'm growing some bonsai indoors. I have a warming pot by the Fukien Tea tree. My thinking behind that is that it'll give it a slight warmth and the slow evaporation of the water will give it a little humidity. What do you think? Also what about humidifiers? Thank you Mr. Chan. This was great! Curious though about Serissa Foetida. I bought one in August and have kept it in the living room next to the window that gets good light. It seems to still be very healthy so I suppose it will do fine living in room temperature. I hear they are difficult bonsai.

Hi Peter, thanks for this video, my 2 indoor ficus are doing well in a south facing window. I have had minimal leaf loss. I have 2 questions. Would you ever pot 2 together in one pot? Also, do you keep yours pot bound for extra growth? Mine are in bigger orchid pots, so that I can monitor the root development and soil moisture.
You can put two in one pot but it should look nice - dont do it just for the sake of doing it.

How much and how often do you water the trees that we see NOT being in the water trays..during winter months? same as others to keep their soil wet? do you still shower all the leaves as well or just the vase/soil ?
The customers tree at 7:21. I have this tree and it recently got frozen in a sharp frost. The leaves are a dark reddish purple now. I think it's this exact species. White sap come out of the leaf stems. I've had it for 15 years and I hope it isn't doomed. Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
If someone were to try and stop the frost from getting to the roots by covering them, would that suffice or is it the branches that are affected too?
Hi Peter. Regarding the Chinese elms - you mentioned the first batch were fed later in the year. Does this mean that you started feeding them later in the year, or continued feeding them for a longer period?

Hello mr Chan and hello everybody :)) can i get an advice on how to procced on taking care of a small giensing ficus bonsai i have one from a few days now its in a normal pot with some nursery soil , should i repot it now or should i wait untill spring to put it in a bonsai pot , and what type of soil should i use , i was living in England but now im back in my country Bulgaria and here the climate is a bit more hotter and there is not much humidity specially durring the warm and hot seasons , does this affect the soil which i have to use erc. thank so much for your replys

Only if it gets too dry. They can stand some drought as they are Mediterranean plants but not completely dry.
Hello! I am a beginner in bonsai and don't have a single bonsai yet. I have sakura tree seeds germinating and weeping willow cuttings in water rooting while I am waiting for pots to come.
I have a question, both of those are bonsai trees that should be kept outside as I understand, however, I want to keep them inside my home. What would be required for me to succeed in keeping those trees alive inside my home? I was thinking about putting them in an insulated terrarium to simulate seasonal temperatures and humidity, or is that overkill? Is there a simpler way?

That's reassuring for my ficus retusa. Half of the tree is totally bare.
What are your thoughts on grow lights for over wintering?
Grow lights are very good. Even if you use ordinary fluorescent lights, that will be good for your plants in winter.

I have one over ask of my indoor planted as the moment and one coming for cuttings and seeds. Also a heat mat. Hopefully that'll give things a good boost into spring.
Hi, my indoor Ficus has lost all its leaves over the last month, I water twice a week and have never let it get too dry. It has possibly been overwatered. The leaves stayed green then fell off. The bottom of the trunk is a little bit white & it’s brown under the branches if I scrape the bark. I have just clipped back some branches a quarter to see if they grow back. Does my plant need any extra care? Thank you.
