This is the best video I have found on You Tube to explain how to play pick direction. You can also see Don's excellent technique as he strikes each pair of strings. A lot of players never get this right from the beginning when it is so very important for many reasons, getting great tone is one of them. Thanks, Don, for this video. Well done.
For a new player like myself this was a GREAT lesson, I learned so much just half way through this. Thank you for being so detailed and not assuming everyone already knows how to do the common strokes.
Do you have any hints on bowing violin.i play mandolin so I know the patterns and shapes but I play hell switching strings with bow.? Anything will help.thanks
@@KatinaHayter-oi3uf Hi. Great question. I found a youtube video that I think might be helpful. HOW TO GET SMOOTH STRING-CROSSINGS ON VIOLIN - Violin Tutorial by Kimberly Hope. I think she does a wonderful job of explaining this. It's really important to have your upper bow arm be at the same angle as the bow. This video talks about it at the beginning. I call it the rocking chair when I first introduce the bow to my students. It takes practice but I am sure that you know that. :) Good luck and have fun! Let me know how it goes.
Hi Don how do you play repetitive triplets? DUD DUD or alternate picking? Do you know Eva Holbrook's Tuscany? What picking pattern would you use? Particularly the quick lick in the opening sequence when shet hits the Cm? Thanks.
Is this the main reason those of us who take up bluegrass just don’t get the speed of it? After watching this I’m realizing that before I was waiting to pick the notes to get my hand into action. This says move your hand in tempo like a metronome - get that rhythm or pace down first then start playing. Don’t know if I’m saying this right but Does this make sense?
Great lesson Don AND LOVE you book, "Mandolin For Dummies" It's a great resource for the Learning Mandolinist THANKS . Anyyone looking for Mando instruction on You Tube should ckeck it out. It's well worth it....
