I still can't grasp the long hose purposes in sidemount. In an out of air situation I'd just pass my second stage followed by the tank ones the situation is under control. Why would I want to be attracted to someone? You have more control over this situation of you both are independent.

Hi Joe, yes there are a couple of different philosophies and methods/techniques in sidemount that give options for OOG situations. Your method is entirely valid if you have the space to do a cylinder exchange and also are diving Aluminium cylinders. ISE and Toddy Style divers use 2 x 1m hoses, AL cylinders, and do OOG sharing this way. If you are diving in a mixed team, backmount and sidemount and/or if you are diving steels (as we are in this video) then firstly, it is good to have a similar technique to your backmount teammates but also handing off a 12L steel is not a good option. They will overweight the receiving diver and underweight the donor. There are also other advantages to the longhose. If you want more on this topic, I discuss it with Steve Bogaerts in my podcast "Speaking Sidemount" Episode #4&5 and with Thorsten "Toddy" Waelde in Episode #24.

I am not a professional instructor and apologizing ahead of time for butting in. Coming from the back mount community we trained on donating long hose , thinking since side mount was a descendant of back mount that’s where the thinking came from

@@sidemountpros this is what I was planning on using for my transition to sidemount, we dive dry cold water, a few people have advised alu ? but I thought steel for sides and alu for stages would be a better combination ,.. from the vids that looks like what you dive ..
Great vids , shame your courses are not in the uk ..

@@aevans692 Hey thanks for the kind words. Yes, Steels are your weapon of choice in colder water with a drysuit. It means you can carry less weight with your cylinders becoming part of your overall balanced rig. Yes, be good to be able to travel right now. There's a bunch but check out Garry Dallas for a top UK sidemount instructor.

Reciever didn't clip his long hose in the OOA exercise.

Well spotted :). This was his first attempt underwater and you can see he is a little tentative and uncertain also. Clipping the long hose was debriefed with him during our video review.

Good to know, I also spotted that, when equipping, he dons the longhose before connecting the drysuit inflator, but I suppose he just makes sure he connects it under the long hose when doing it, I recall that it should be connected first. Great video, I enjoyed it very much.

Thanks Alvaro for the positive comments. Re the drysuit inflator, he has in fact donned correctly. It seems counterintuitive, but the drysuit inflator hose goes over the long hose when stowed in the manner we do it i.e. 1st stages inward. This is because the long hose lies along the top/inside of the cylinder when in trim. Once fully deployed with the turret oriented upwards, the long hose will come from above and the inside of the drysuit inflator. If you do it the other way it will still deploy, but you will lose a few cm of hose caught around the drysuit inflator hose plus will not be able to orient the turret upwards. Hope that makes :)

Wow, I'll check that out... maybe I'm not doing it in the propper way. My instruction didn't involve a drysuit and, even I recall being said how it should be connected, my memory might being confusing me. Thanks a million. Keep up the good job.
