      belated response, I know. In Inquisition, if you explore and speak to everyone in Skyhold, there's a physician (around the wounded/dying soldiers) that explains that there's always use of good herbs and plants to be used as an alternative to magic. So for this predicament upon Leliana to work, I'm guessing that Brother Genitivi found her gravely wounded and provided likeness treatment with herbs and plants, until was able to pass her towards an Enchanter for better treatment. I could go outlandish and say that Andraste herself swooped down, after seeing her ashes being defiled, and blessed Leliana with new life, which is why she was more dedicated to the Chantry in DA2 and Inquisition.

I understand giving the player so many choices makes that an issue but it can be done.

    I love dwarves in my fantasy games. To say that it's a fetish is stupid when those saying it are usually the ones going out of their way to expand or use elves, or dark seductress mages, or sexy pirates, or bulky sexaholic barbarians, and the list goes on. Truth is they had their own fetishes they think is supreme, thus the sexualization of them. However I loved the Josephine romance and adored flirting with Harding. It also doesn't escape me that the elves in Thedas are by and large considered to be inferior/slaves but are still written as love interests or sex objects or whatever, but romances/sexual encounters with (fantasy) dwarves are toooooo taboo to write or include because of irl HUMAN people with dwarfism, (as if they are not capable of 1) having sex; 2) being considered attractive). Another commenter mentioned the fact that people with visible disabilities are infantilized, making them inherently "unattractive" outside of people with fetishes... which is more telling of the devs/writters than the people who play their games.

    The issue with retconning character deaths is that it makes it progressively more difficult to have emotional stakes. It’s becomes the same as killing Batman or Superman - no one really takes it seriously. Would A Song of Ice and Fire be anywhere near as popular if the next book revealed that the people from the previous book who died are not really dead? Sure, you can have one or two fake outs,like Gandalf in Lord of the Rings, but once it becomes common to retcon deaths people stop having emotional investment in the characters.

      tbh, the origins body shapes were a result of the team using the human male body rig as the base shape for all race+gender variations. it's the same reason why the dwarves have gorilla arms that drag the ground and human females have yaoi shoulders. so, they may have tried to make the elves look the way they did in da2/dai the whole time if they'd built each body rig from scratch.

    The only retcon I didn’t like was the change from having the Templar’s take lyrium for their powers. Having the church control their army by controlling their access to an addictive substance had some interesting implications from a thematic perspective, especially for a set up like Inquisition. I have a theory that they wrote a story that critiqued conformity and related religious fundamentalism or zealotry and then removed the critique when they actually made the game. As a result, a bunch of dark elements were introduced but never interrogated and it feels like the story just lacked the punch that DA:O and DA:II with their stronger themes.
    I didn’t really like that they had an opportunity in Inquisition to really explore the demons in relation to the religious themes that could have been present in the game and then chose to make them mindless mobs instead. They were much less interesting. But that isn’t really a retcon, it’s just that they ignored the cool demons and gave us a bunch of mindless mob demons to grind for xp.
    I was fine with Anders appearing in DA:II the way he was. The Anders character fit the theme and the story and was extremely well executed. I didn’t mind the aesthetic changes either. I liked that the races became more distinct in DA:II. I kind of think of the DA:O Leliana and the Inqusition Leliana as the same person but in two different, parallel dimensions. All in all, I don’t mind just about all of the retcons. I wouldn’t mind any retcon that served the purpose of making a stronger story or better game.

      Oh, I almost forgot about this. They retconned all of Qunari culture. They could have just had Iron Bull struggling with the difference between the dictates of his conscience and the dictates of his culture and that’s why he was accepting of Krem where the Qunari in general have a more rigid view of gender and that would have made a lot of sense within his personal story arc. In general, I think they removed a lot of the conflict with culture/society/class from the game in Inquisition. The story was more milquetoast than the previous games because of it.
      If they really wanted to critique that rigid worldview, then displaying it and the negative impacts of it would have been more effective than erasing it. Making the Qunari woke undermines any attempt at critiquing that worldview.

    I have always seen retcons as being a result of new writers wanting to change the path of a story midstream. The old writers had a plan, the new writers don't really like it and have their own plan so they hand wave a bunch of stuff and start their own path going forward.
    A great example of this is the Qunari. Sten presents the basic Qunari philosophy as "You cannot escape/change what you are". It is why he gets confused if you are a female fighter of some sort. For the Qunari, women cannot be fighters, so you cannot be a woman and a fighter. Successive writers have not liked dealing with this, as they want their female Qunari fighters, dammit! And later, we want the Qunari to not be transphobic for some reason (as if that would be the only problematic thing about their culture...) we have Iron Bull make a convoluted explanation about women who want to be fighters can declare themselves to be men (which makes no sense in a culture that assigns your role at birth). True, Iron Bull is Hissrad, and could be lying about this, but we still have Tallis who does not fit either explanation, being a female fighter... not a male fighter or a transman fighter.
    All this makes sense if you look at it as successive writing teams not liking the previous writer's direction and figleafing a lore break to make a change they want in the canon. It sucks, but it is what happens when you bring in different artists from the original to continue/complete a work of art.

      As for the female fighter thing.. yep, they want to be inclusive, which is stupid since I don't think any sane person would look at the Qun as a good example for society.

    • @Jan-gh7qi
      @Jan-gh7qi Рік тому +6

      @@alexandrearaujo7114 I think, one problem with the qunari is, that there we're two concepts of them from the start, that contradict each other.
      They are explicitely modelled after the two largest ways of organizing a society, that are traditionally in the West recieved as opposed to the Western way of life: Islam and Communism. They are based in a revelation in the desert, connect culture and ethicity in specific way, have an Expansionslist aspect to their worldview and are at war with the Bayzantine Empire analogue. (No I'm not saying that Islam is always like that, but this is how it is often recieved in western Media). Like in the Western Image of a communitst society, they habe a distaste vor monarcy, organize labour by plans , have an all controlling state and have replaced religion with idiology. They are the essence of "Nonwestern Culture" or more bluntly they are what every American is afraid of ;)
      The writers now use them in two very opposing ways: On the one Hand they are a foil to the human world. They might not be right in their actions every time but they offer a new point to think about the human society.
      In the other hand they serve as easy villains. You need a generic cartoon villain? Here is some Stalinist-Taliban with horns.
      Both are fine, but they don't go very well together...

      I think you’re misunderstanding what Sten meant by women can’t be fighters, he doesn’t mean biological women can’t fight, he means that’s a woman in Qunari culture just isn’t a fighter, the Qunari don’t see men and women as what you’re born as or what you identify as, but it’s what you are based on your job, if you’re a fighter you are man, regardless of sex or gender, if you’re a baker you’re a woman regardless of sex or gender. For a militaristic culture to refuse strong women in the military just for being women is ridiculous, and it’s equally ridiculous said culture would allow weak men into the military just for being men
      This can also be used to do away with Bull not caring about Krem, ignoring that he’s basically Tal-Vashoth already and probably not even guided by the Qun, Krem, a born woman, is choosing to be a fighter and mercenary, that would make Krem a man in the Qun regardless of whether or not Krem identifies as one conventionally

    • @SeventhheavenDK
      @SeventhheavenDK Рік тому +7

      @@spacejesus6581Actually no. Sten literally asks the Warden, Leliana and Wynne why do they want to be men.
      Because he sees them as women because physically they are women and that's how he sees them.
      If the qunari assigned gender because of their roles then Sten's question would had been... Why do you call yourself a woman if you are a man?
      Which means Sten doesn't recognize their Gender because of their job, but because of what they biologically are.
      The Krem situation was just a big retcon to push a woke agenda, and to use it as a social bludgeon. One of the worst ways to push said agenda, by the way. Iron Bull wasn't even Tal-Vashot yet when that scene with Krem happened.
      On top of that, Bull also mentions that the Qunari people refer to the trans with a specific word (which I don't remember right now), and also mentions that they still make fun of them at their backs, contradictory again, because then that means they DO recognize their gender by the body they are originally born with.

    • @kongming66
      @kongming66 Рік тому

      @@SeventhheavenDK Both you and op sound like you're projecting your own agenda. It's def a retcon, but one that was very useful for both creating new plotline and worldbuilding opportunities and expanding the lore beyond "look, the Muslim/Commie ogres think women should stay in the kitchen." Besides reinforcing the subtle underlying theme that the Qunari are ironically not a monolith by contradicting themselves every new game, the trans bit in particular was blatantly added to flesh out Tevinter and show how they and the Qunari are diametrically opposed. Add to that how every female and mage Qunari character have been walking contradictions to the Qun, and it makes the Qunari much more interesting than one-dimensional secondary antagonists.
      But go ahead and minimize it as "woke" because it doesn't fit *your* agenda. Not like all 3 games and DLCs were helmed by *one main writer* who oversaw the worldbuilding until 2015.

    Regarding leliana's death - I think lampshading it in dai was the wrong move. The way I chose to see it is as follows:
    Leliana doesn't die but is injured and left for dead. The fact you can "see her desintegrate" is simply because of the game mechanics. Every corpse you loot vanishes and the devs didn't make any destinctions between leliana and any other npc so the issue is a purely visual one.
    If you like you can of course say that maybe she also thought she was dead/unconscious and maybe she was even brought back the the gauntlet ghost which makes he believe she was actually dead. As it stands it is a retcon but not one that I mind.

    I honestly never thought dwarf romance could be considered a perverse fetish, I honestly don't see why they restrict themselves story-wise because of some very obscure fetish a few odd people have. I find it strange that they are disgusted by the idea, especially since Iron Bull's romance is very "fetishy". I hope they changed their mind of that, romance is honestly incredibly important and it's sad that dwarf players cannot have a dwarf romance, it sort of makes them a second rate race that can never get what the others have.

    Something about dwarves always confused me, do they gain the ability or lose their resistance to magic after they turn into darkspawn? Because you see it goes like this. a female dwarf turns into a broodmother, but that broodmother only spawns Genlocks, Qunari broodmothers spawn Orges, Human broodmothers spawn Hurlocks and Elf Broodmothers spawn Shrieks. You would think the dwarves spawn shrieks and elves Genlocks but no. so it stands to reason that the dwarf darkspawn gain magical abilities after being born as darkspawn. not sure if I looked this up somewhere on dragon age wiki or it was somewhere in the game. but the elf to shriek transformation can be seen in game with Tamlin. Since, if you play a Dalish warden, he will be with the shrieks that attack your camp later on.

    • @TheSpicyLeg

      You kind of have to take Origins and the books with a grain of salt. It was obvious they wrote origins as a self-contained story, which is why it ends decisively. It wasn’t written with heavily planned lore expansions in mind.
      However, the Calling book brings up several possibilities for how dwarves can access magic. The Architect uses blight magic, and does things previously thought impossible, like halting the degeneration of Ulta’s mind from the taint. Fiona becomes pregnant despite being sterile from the taint. And the Architect teaches First Enchanter Remille to wield blight magic, speeds up the tainted degeneration, that sort of thing.
      If the taint is the Abyss as is believed, and originated from the Black City in the Fade, then darkspawn are really Abyss creatures from the Fade, in a way. Perhaps the Sidereal magisters, making a connection to the Abyss upon breaching the Black City, can establish a tie to it through the taint. This isn’t surprising given that mages are simply people who can tap into the Fade at will. Once a dwarf is corrupted by the taint, it can access that power through the taint itself.
      It is also possible that dwarves always could access magic, but the Titans severed the connection in order to prevent the elves from continuing their genocidal war via magical means, as was seen by Fen’Harel’s killing of dwarves through dreamwalking. A dwarf tainted loses this protection, it’s just that they are so compromised that they can’t learn to utilize magic before they are killed. It isn’t as though they are interacted with beyond attacking.

The fact that they tried to present him as a 'good/decent templar' in the 3rd game really bothered me because they glossed over all the shitty things he did and all the new players who got introduced to Dragon Age with Inquisition first wouldn't even know about it. He is a deeply flawed person. But a person who consistently wants to do good. Just gets lost in what the good is. Like many other DA characters: Solas, Anders, Merril, Leliana under certain play-throughs. It's a great aspect of Dragon Age games. He grows and works through his issues and is willing to admit he was wrong. Which to me is very powerful. I think it's cool how he starts and ends as a relatively compassionate person despite being very much rule-oriented. He loses that side of him, after he was shown none...Also, in my opinion his assholeness is exaggerated by people who dislike him. Yes, he says some awful things. But that's after torture, witnessing insane amount of death and brutality, and being starved and on withdrawal...Also, it's his words that are bad, he doesn't actually do anything particularly evil. As an rpg, the dev's response to character death in game (eg Leliana) seems quite derogatory and disheartening. I don't mind Leliana returning as you can find ways to canonically justify it in your own world state, but to tell gamers their choices in an rpg when it comes to character death doesn't matter just takes away player agency and the point of an rpg based around player choices. Had he expressed an understanding of this, and that the reason to bring such characters back was to drive the story, rather than telling their own fan's they'll be disappointed and leaving it at that, would have demonstrated that the devs at least pretend to care what their own consumers want and would earn them far more good will. And good will can get a gaming company a lot of consumer trust that translates to more games bought both present and future.
    The fact they said this, combined with the excuse that they think their own gamers fetishize dwarves (projecting much?) just gives the sense that they either don't trust or don't like their own fans. Remember when we all met Scout Harding? Everyone and their mothers were raving how cute and adorable she was, not how they wanted to frick her. It sounds like such a demeaning viewpoint to have on the people who have been and are supporting your work.

Or they could have had Wynne use the last of her life force/spirit friend to heal Lelianna, Lelianna faked her death, or was left for dead and managed to crawl away later.

    I always suspected Dwarves do dream, but without their connection to the Titan they can't remember doing so upon waking up. As for the erasure of the Titans from Orzammar history, it might have been a practical decision by the city's leaders. Imagine waiting hundreds of years for something so important to your people coming back, but only receive silence. So the leaders who wish to just move on remove records and ban mention of the Titans. Then they think of propping up Paragons as a replacement.

      Considering dreaming is a way of processing memories, I wonder if this is why so many retcons happen? Humans/elves in DA go tothe Fade while sleeping, so they should have terrible short/long term memory conversion.
      The Warden only remembers killing Leliana but she was actually back at camp and bailed.

      @@kyleellis1825 I never chose to kill Leliana so that never came to mind. There aren't many mentions of people sharing their dreams in Dragon Age. So I can't say for sure if many non-dwarves do forget. But I have long suspected there is a limit to how far the Fade's influence reaches from Thedas. I'd love to hear from the Qunari how you don't dream in the Fade if you sail far enough.

    I hate how they are like "we dont give a F what your choices were in previous games... we will do as we please". At this point they should just stick to making Dragon Age a comic book or animated series or movie. Also i get how they might need certain characters to have a plot armor and return but atleast they should make a reasonable explanation... Not just "we wanted them back, deal with it"
    EDIT: Theres another retcon that made no sence: In DA:O its made clear that once you become a warden - theres no escape. Yet plenty of characters went away from the order. Some returned to their former duties, some have chance of becoming king, and others are just runaways.

    • @greenfrogbad

      It's mostly the honor system and oppurtunity in the DAO Warden's case. Duncan was appealing both to the character's sense of duty in the face of an existential threat as well as the very real possibility that a senoir Warden may chose to summarily execute a deserter like Ser Jory. After the blight it would be hard to leash the Ferelden Warden Commander, they could make up any excuse to go awol. It all comes down to what the First Warden would let them get away with, or be able to do anything about.
      I'd imagine the impending doom of your eventual calling would keep many in the order as well, knowing whatever life you tried to get on with would be cut relatively short, and only other warden's could understand the buden of living with the taint.

    Okay, what are those hair and clothing mods for your white-haired elf character? And can those mod developers be brought on to help design hair for Dread Wolf? So far the most frustrating thing with Dragon Age are the “what the heck is this?!” hair options. 😂
