As a recent owner of the red special from BMG I can only say. It's a unique guitar. Plays like a dream although the original has a much thicker neck and very low frets which actually makes it very hard to play. So I think they made a tremendous effort to mix this. The sound is very much in the guitar. I'm running it through a Marshall preamp and valvestate poweramp and a Marshall speaker emulator/powersoack. All need to be checked because I picked up playing again after 25 years. So I don't even think it's at its best at the moment. As effects I use a quadraverb GT and the sound difference between my other guitars and the red special is shocking. The vox will do the sound more justice probably but even on the marshalls you can hear that the guitar is the main "voice" and ofcourse Brian himself. He is and always be unique. If you look at his playing style and hand use (and coin) you can see that it's all the feel and attack of his fingers. Emulating someone like Brian is especially hard because he doesn't use his sound as an effect but he is the sound combined with an unique guitar. Some sounds can be achieved easily because the player for example uses a fixed setting for distortion or overdrive or clean and uses that. With Brian it's the way he hits the strings or uses his fingers combined with the volume control on the guitar and the coin. Of course every player does this to some extent but he is just a master in making his guitar litterally speak/sing. For fans make sure to also check the book about the red special.

On the subject of ear protection... About 10 months ago, I was playing quite loudly on a small 30 watt solid state amp. It was sitting about 5 feet to my right & facing me. Long story short, I hit a very high pitch, pinch harmonic and it felt like a drill bit went through my right ear. For the first couple months after, everytime I played, it was very uncomfortable. The longer I played, the worst it felt. So for the last few months, I've been babying it... No earbuds or earphones, always playing at low volume, not aiming the speaker directly at my head, always using an earplug or cotton or even toilet paper in that ear. Anyway, it's finally going away. THANK GOD!!! Talk about, "Don't know what you got til it's gone"! My best advise- DON'T EVER HAVE THE SKEAKER POINTED DIRECTLY AT YOUR EAR(S)!!!!!!! I played for 36yrs without incident and had always been careful about protecting my ears, it just took one time of carelessness and a bad habit of pointing my amp at my head. I hope sharing this experience helps someone else not repeat the same mistake. Just treat your own ears as you would your child's ears. Otherwise... Rock On!
It's actually pretty easy: any 100W Marshall "plexi" (1959HW reissue, for example) with a Marshall 4x12 cab, a Vox V847 wah, and a Gibson (Les Paul, Firebird, or 335). Settings: all on 10; you control on the guitar. You might want a vintage mic if you are recording, but that's it.
My wife plays guitar too and I built a custom strat type guitar for her as a birthday present. It's a lefty strat with the Brian May switching options and she was so impressed with it.
Clément Romieu Marshall Superlead everything @ 10 through 4x12 greenback cab, Fuzzface and dunlop wah in front of the amp, Fender Stratocaster in hands. Done
Why do people feel the need to answer people's requests in the comments lol. People want to see a video, not read someone's opinion on the internet lol
the BMG super is is sadly discontinued far as i can tell. But theres an alternative you can buy a perfect replica of the Red Special on Dansan guitars. €4860 is very pricey sure but if you ever plan on doing Sound Like Brian May By Busting The Bank that's your best option.
Hell yeah, man! Brian is such an amazing guitarist and that Red Special is honestly a really nice-looking guitar... I wish I could build something that iconic
I own at least the Vox VX50 GTV amp, it has the AC30 Top Boost channel, model, etc., and I'm so glad it does. Plus it has tons and tons of sheer power. I've played some Queen and some Rory Gallagher on it, and you can definitely get close to those tones on that amp, especially using the FX or some good pedals. I don't have the Brian May guitar, however. I wish I did!
Gentlemen: As always, entertaining and great playing! This one was bound to be tricky - few guitarists have achieved such a singularly unique sound [and variety of sounds] as Brian May - that's just one reason he's a legend. And just as with your attempt at Alex Lifeson, you do kinda get in the ballpark though honestly, not a home run. Yet that is really more a limitation resulting from the budget I think, combined with how sonically complex both Alex' and Brian's tones actually are. BUT!!! You totally missed the mark on one point - Brian May famously plays guitar with a coin. And English shilling I believe. That would have cost you guys nothing :D CORRECTION! Just re-watched Premier Guitar's 2014 Rig Rundown for Brian. Apparently he uses an English sixpence for his picks and he feels the ones from 1947 are the best. Gotta love that guy! Again, a yeoman's effort! :D
This is kind of an easy one though dont you think. Especially since the guy has signature for every piece of equipment imaginable. And if you cant afford the good stuff its just an Ibanez RG, Marshall 40C, his distortion pedal, and delay.
I think it's about time for a by busting the bank on Brian May. It would be cool to see a 3 AC30 setup like Brian uses. There are a lot of people that try to get the sound right but it's a bit off without 3 amps and the delay.
As much as i am a Brian may Fan since I’m a small child and have now even built my own red special, I have to tell you that delay is only necessary for the Brighton rock solo which imo is one of the biggest musicial catastrophes😂🤣
The sad reality is that I really could not tell if it was a joke or not. People don't realize that too much gain and cutting mids is actually a terrible practice when you play live. See, there are a ton of metal "bros" who go out and buy a MetalZone, a 6505, and an EQ, and try to gig with the amp's mids all the way down, and the EQ's mids all the way down, with the amp gain way up and the MetalZone on, but you can't hear them at all in a mix (I've done sound work every once in a while), and they have to turn up louder starting a volume war. You try to tell them to crank those mids back up and kill the MetalZone, and then they bitch about their tone, their decisions.
I don't want to sound mean toward Andertons, but you could probably sound closer to queen by using gear found elsewhere. The BM Touring Booster is £129 and replaces your drive pedal, you can use a regular chorus set quietly in the front to get the chorusy tones, as well as an affordable phaser and delay. That into an AC-15, not forgetting the sixpence plectrum and the various pickup combinations used would get a lot closer. Love the videos though!
You did a great job of sounding like Brian. . He is amazing in his abilities and in his range of talents. He can play Heavy Metal Hard Rock, for example in early versions of the song "Jesus" from their first album, and he can play Beautiful Flamenco like guitar in "Who Needs You" from News of the World. Brian May is one of the best ever. Always a pleasure to listen to him.
He does live. He uses a semi-hollow replica made by British luthier Andrew Guyton. He did use his original for the main solo a few times (watch the 'Return Of The Champions' version)
@@jackdixon29jd he always used the black tele for the solo live before freddie died and would usually switch to the red special for the improvised ending solo.
About a 50/50 on this one. First of all you need the coin! We Will Rock You was way too muddy...but Tie Your Mother Down & Crazy Little Thing were real close for an affordable rig. Love you guys...always entertaining.
One tip if you brian may’s out of phase sound, you could get a phaser that not just allows you to adjust the rate, but also sweep and blend, then put those at the lowest setting put it after an od pedal, and you’re done
really, in my opininon there was enough off either, the low end was way to sludgy and the gain was too low, there version of we rock was a little weak in my opinion, Brian has much more grit
A lot of tone comes from the pick, so it's important to remember to use a small, thin coin as your pick. B rian uses an old sixpence, but a new 5p or 1p will do. You don't want it to have smooth edges.
Thanks for this. Was considering grabbing a screaming bird as its the only cheap treble boost. But after both reactions and saying it got you nowhere close has saved me some coin.
brian may by busting the bank red spedial guitar - treble booster - maybe phaser - 3 way splitter - stereo chorus - stereo pitch shifter - stereo delay (800ms left, 1600ms right for brighton rock) - 3 VOX AC30s with AlNiCo Blue Speakers on full wet/dry/wet
This sounded like an almost impossible challenge. May's guitar is completely unique as is his style. Sure a copy of his guitar is close but not quite there. Nicely done lads.

Gibson-style guitar with humbuckers. Neck pickup, tone on 0 - 2.
Tube amp with overdrive.
Jimi Hendrix by busting the bank please !
Clément Romieu they already did it
Luca Franchi not by busting the bank
Clément Romieu Marshall Superlead everything @ 10 through 4x12 greenback cab, Fuzzface and dunlop wah in front of the amp, Fender Stratocaster in hands. Done
cause you really dont need to. If anything youre getting a better amp than the one they used before
Why do people feel the need to answer people's requests in the comments lol. People want to see a video, not read someone's opinion on the internet lol
6 years and still no BY BUSTING THE BANK?!
Sound like Brian Setzer
the BMG super is is sadly discontinued far as i can tell. But theres an alternative you can buy a perfect replica of the Red Special on Dansan guitars. €4860 is very pricey sure but if you ever plan on doing Sound Like Brian May By Busting The Bank that's your best option.
It's time for Ritchie Blackmore
The Stig yep
Which Blackmore? Purple Blackmore or Rainbow Blackmore? or perhaps Blackmore's Knight Blackmore?
cubistone I'd prefer Rainbow but if they can get Machine Head and Rising tones out of the same rig that would be awesome.
The Stig yup Purple of 'Made in Japan' + Rainbow of 'Stranger In Us All' = Strat tones of the highest order
Hell yeah, man! Brian is such an amazing guitarist and that Red Special is honestly a really nice-looking guitar... I wish I could build something that iconic
If you want to bust the bank - Andertons should order in one of those gorgeous Red Special copies that Brian May himself has had made.
I own at least the Vox VX50 GTV amp, it has the AC30 Top Boost channel, model, etc., and I'm so glad it does. Plus it has tons and tons of sheer power. I've played
some Queen and some Rory Gallagher on it, and you can definitely get close to those tones on that amp, especially using the FX or some good pedals. I don't
have the Brian May guitar, however.
That would have cost you guys nothing :D
CORRECTION! Just re-watched Premier Guitar's 2014 Rig Rundown for Brian. Apparently he uses an English sixpence for his picks and he feels the ones from 1947 are the best. Gotta love that guy!
Again, a yeoman's effort! :D
+skuyo0703...it's called an "education"....Consider getting one.
Have a nice day.
Joe Satchton sixpence
This was a fun listen! Cool to do this on the 31st anniversary of Queen's show at Wembley in 1986! (July 12, 1986).
Well done for that!!
Crazy little thing called love is on a tele, you didn't use a Pence, and one vision is on A Kind Of Magic.
Nicholas Montalti that tele was just used for the video.
this is "sound like brian may" not "be brian may".
Neale Scott it was used on the record as well and in live performances
No, it wasn't. According to Brian, to his chagrin, they "made" him use a Telecaster on the record: ua-cam.com/video/_gSuF01Ponk/v-deo.html
One vision is on the Iron Eagle soundtrack, as well as A Kind Of Magic.
That Brighton Rock impression is beautiful! Well done Rabea!
Do a sound like Steve Vai without busting the bank!
get a JEM and a Carvin or Mesa Boogie or a Marshall amp.
Kristof Liszkai oh yeah!
And so the bank was busted.
This is kind of an easy one though dont you think. Especially since the guy has signature for every piece of equipment imaginable. And if you cant afford the good stuff its just an Ibanez RG, Marshall 40C, his distortion pedal, and delay.
Ibanez Jem JR - £378
Marshall DSL40C - £500
Dunlop Cry Baby Wah - £90
Boss DD3 - £115
MXR Analog Chorus - £100
Digitech Whammy V - £158
Boss DS1 - £50
total - £1391
I think it's about time for a by busting the bank on Brian May. It would be cool to see a 3 AC30 setup like Brian uses. There are a lot of people that try to get the sound right but it's a bit off without 3 amps and the delay.
As much as i am a Brian may Fan since I’m a small child and have now even built my own red special, I have to tell you that delay is only necessary for the Brighton rock solo which imo is one of the biggest musicial catastrophes😂🤣
But yeah they should take a 3 amp setup with chorus and a handmade homemade red special for the best
Sound like Boston first 2 albums
Tr3y yes please!!
How about sound like The Cult (Billy Duffy) from the Love / Electric album era? stuff like "She Sells Sanctuary" and "Love Removal Machine"
Sound like DEATH! (R.I.P Chuck)
played some Queen while on my way to work, and this pop up on my youtube feeds. yay!
No Van Halen?
quiksilver78 Brown sound with no mids? Blasphemy.
If they do Van Halen I hope they do his old sound rather than his 90s onward type sound.
EVH is all mids man. Cutting mids just won't work works in a live situation because the guitar is a midrange instrument.
You try to tell them to crank those mids back up and kill the MetalZone, and then they bitch about their tone, their decisions.
these videos are great. Keep them coming. For an idea EACH OF YOU CREATE YOUR OWN SOUND.
Come on Bea,you could have built your own Guitar for this dude!!!!
Sound like the Beatles
or how about you for under £500
>name is Jimmy Page
>profile is Stones logo
>asks for Beatles
Hickory McCay lmao
Sound like Rise Against without breaking the bank! Love these videos btw
Sound like the who, the cure and mick ronson
You did a great job of sounding like Brian. . He is amazing in his abilities and in his range of talents. He can play Heavy Metal Hard Rock, for example in early versions of the song "Jesus" from their first album, and he can play Beautiful Flamenco like guitar in "Who Needs You" from News of the World. Brian May is one of the best ever. Always a pleasure to listen to him.
The Crazy Little Thing Called Love solo sounded great on your video, but Brian didn't actually use his Red Special for that solo.
Sound like Nile Rogers?
It might sound even better if you somehow ran it all out to two AC15s! Given May is running his rig through a wall of Voxs etc.
how about sound like eric johnson?
One tip if you brian may’s out of phase sound, you could get a phaser that not just allows you to adjust the rate, but also sweep and blend, then put those at the lowest setting put it after an od pedal, and you’re done
Too much treble and distortions. Brian May sounds more airy.
hotman718 TF are you talking about? It sounded great!
really, in my opininon there was enough off either, the low end was way to sludgy and the gain was too low, there version of we rock was a little weak in my opinion, Brian has much more grit
Braydon Barnum cause he used a fuzz (fuzzface I believe) that’s probably the only way you’d come close to getting that kind of grit
@@ezgregory7794 brian may never used a fuzz face of any kind
@@ffs_auggie Fuck off you prick.
A lot of tone comes from the pick, so it's important to remember to use a small, thin coin as your pick. B rian uses an old sixpence, but a new 5p or 1p will do. You don't want it to have smooth edges.
Do a sound like for Mick Ronson!
Excellent job, guys! Love Queen and Brian May.
Sound like Coheed and Cambria please!
isshinryukid yes please!!
Thanks for this. Was considering grabbing a screaming bird as its the only cheap treble boost. But after both reactions and saying it got you nowhere close has saved me some coin.
DIdnt he use his black tele for CLTCL?
I’m pretty sure
Yeah, but for live versions he uses red special, especially nowadays.
Honestly one of your best sounding rigs. Well done!!
Those ear plugs work better when they're in your ears, Bea.
Just sayin', man.
brian may by busting the bank
red spedial guitar - treble booster - maybe phaser - 3 way splitter - stereo chorus - stereo pitch shifter - stereo delay (800ms left, 1600ms right for brighton rock) - 3 VOX AC30s with AlNiCo Blue Speakers on full wet/dry/wet
Rammstein PLZ
This sounded like an almost impossible challenge. May's guitar is completely unique as is his style. Sure a copy of his guitar is close but not quite there. Nicely done lads.
Do a sound like buckethead but u have to wear a KFC bucket lol
Awesome!!!
Please, do a Funky sound without busting a bank!
How to sound nothing like Brian May by spending a grand and a half.
I love Brian May's playing, you guys did a great job.
Do a "By Busting The Bank" for brian but get a Brian May Guitars Super in to do the video, 2-3k right there!
FINALLY! THANK YOU so much for doing this one! AHHHH!
Do Pete Townshend next!!!
be good to see this with the super budget version and what guitar you end up using... as always though, brilliant video!
sounds like Nuno Bettencourt, III sides tones
Please please please. The 2nd album non-ballad songs too please (It's a Monster, He-Man Woman Hater, Decadence Dance, etc)...
'By not busting the bank'... if you'd used the Blue speaker AC15 flat out, the speaker would have probably lasted about 20 minutes.
2:13 rob scallons guitar can be seen in the background
You are spot on with his tone. 👍🏿👍🏿
