I don't think art teachers realize the power their words have over little creative minds, and it's so sad. I remember clear as if it happened yesterday my third grade art teacher making me redo I project I was so proud of because I'd carved in sun rays, and she said "you can't see the rays of the sun, redo it". My creative spirit withered so much that day. And yes, every time I see the rays of the sun in the sky I think of her. Many times I say out loud "you were wrong lady!".

Elise Gerard I had a teacher tell me that oxygen was not important to life on earth, but that water was the most important. I knew in that moment, I was ten, that there are some people who genuinely believe they know better than you and are sadly mistaken. There was no single right answer. It's all in your perspective! I spent an unbelievable amount of time in the bush, creeks and sun soaked clearings and those vignettes informed my art as much as anything. With the crack of thunder came my mother's encouragement "get your bathing suits on and get out there and play! Not seen as "safe" today lol. I'm so lucky! I've had so many aha moments watching Gina!

I say those same words quite often! You are right teachers are so powerful and many don't realize the impact they have.
I'm glad to see you were able to turn your negative experience into a positive one.
      Keep on creating!

Hi, I teach art and would never give my student negative feedback. Feedforward yes, how they can improve and develop. You should have been encouraged to paint and draw what you see in your heart, not just with your eyes. xx

Good afternoon, Gina! My senior year of high school I FINALLY got placed in advanced English, along with all my other "smart" friends. One day the teacher picked out a piece of writing I wrote and announced to the class it was the WORST paper he had ever read! I shrank into my seat and shut down writing for 3 years (in college)...sigh...
I transferred universities, after my husband and I married (I was only 20), and went to one of the University of California branches where I took a year-long course, The History of Science. Needless to say, after MANY, MANY tearful nights, I learned HOW TO WRITE. I ended up with a double major AND a writing minor at UC Riverside.
I went on to be a district writing coach for my school district and did many presentations and was also a district PAID consultant over the summer due to my writing ability and knowledge.
So, you see, we have similar stories! I now have 3 blogs (mostly with our travel photos) and I LOVE to write. I always did. I look now and think how STUPID and RUDE that teacher was and I made sure I NEVER criticized a child in class! NEVER LET PEOPLE put you down!
By the way, I LOVE all your art work!
    Cheryl Ann

Finding your channel (just yesterday!) has been like finding a new author that you absolutely love and discovering they have 20 books written that you have not read. I would like to pause my world and watch each of your videos a few times, back-to-back; but, alas, there are meals to cook and floors to clean, so I will just use the videos as a reward for completing my mundane chores. Little treasures awaiting me, dispensed strategically in little snips of time! I looked quickly to see if anyone commented about the lyrics and I was disappointed in myself for having to Google!!! Lovely Rita. I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN THAT! 😩

My first work of art would have been one of my photographs. I am now sewing them as pockets, tucks, and journaling pages for my own journals! I just discovered Mary Ann Moss last night while babysitting the grandkids! I can't wait to see more of your videos!

This is great! I pulled out my High School Senior Memory book from 1983 to show my daughter something. Didn't take long for me to realize that I had been 'smash-booking' back then before it ever had a name. I kept every little tidbit of ephemera/memorabilia from my senior year in H.S....cards, ticket stubs, notes from friends/teachers, pictures, etc. It was great!

Oh good a place I can release my experience. I was in 7th grade. The art teacher told the class to look out the window and draw something we see. I was so excited. There was a church and lovey trees across the street but I decided to draw the three trash cans with the overflow around them on the sidewalk. It came out really good and I too was very proud. The perspective was correct as was the shading, it was in pencil. She took one look at my drawing and preceeded to embarrass me in front of the whole class! I never drew again telling people, "I can't draw". At the ripe old age of 64 with encouragement from friends I started drawing. To my surprise I realized how good I was when a multitude of Facebook strangers started telling me I was talented! Shock of my life. Some people should NEVER be teachers! Thank God for the adult coloring book craze.

I think this will be a very interesting series. Can't wait to see more of how you evolved. I'm new, about a year now, and had a scrapbooking background. I am learning so much and want to find my own style too. Right now I'm taking pieces of what I like from other peoples videos but can't say I have a style yet! But I am seeing more and more that it is a process. Thanks for doing this.

I've never been able to 'Journal' with words, either as a daily diary or in scrapbooking. Jan of 2018 I decided to cover an empty 9x6" sketch book with scrapbooking paper, writing 'Renew" on the cover in magic marker--along with some other words of things I wanted to 'renew'. It started out very 'safe' and I might even say boring...but by March I was showing much more of my feelings as my husband's health continued to fail. Unbeknownst to me, I was 'junk journaling' I guess. Even as I look through the almost completed journal, it is a very personal journey of that last year we had together, and the shock of actually losing him. It has been so very healing, private and amazing. Who knew that we could show our emotions without words.

Interesting, I’ve been stuck for a while now in regards to artistic direction. Hummm, maybe all my life. Watching someone else’s video who referenced yours, brought me here. From you, I’m finding just how to find my artistic self first, which means I go back into my earliest art related memory while I still have some memory....lol. I just turned (69 years young.)
Thank you for your series. Generally speaking, this helps everyone. I never did scrapbooking or junk journaling, or art journaling. I’m all over the place, lol. Very confusing to me, stifling I think and time waits for no one....time to get to it with your helpful direction, thank you💕💕💕

Love your videos! When I heard your comment about your art teacher I thought about my own experience in High School when the "Art Teacher" held up my drawing to show the class what their drawings should NOT look like. It still hurts a little even after 30+ years but now I know art is a journey and each person's art should not look like anyone else's as it is a unique expression of the person you are. It's good to be reminded that art should be fun, playful and therapeutic. Thanks for sharing your journey and I hope you get some rest before your show tomorrow!

I notice that my style is changing-- I'm beginning to see how my "boundaries" are opening up and I'm more "adventurous" with how I use the components on a page-- and I"m so pleased! A friend of mine told me about an art ed class where students shared stories of hurtful/damaging comments made by art teachers. Apparently the sharing brought several people to tears. My story occurred in fifth grade when my teacher announced that she was putting my painting on the bulletin board as a joke.(She announced that to the class) It had been my second attempt to fulfill the assignment and I actually had given up on trying to make my painting look like my classmate's who was very skilled at drawing. I decided to have fun and what was fun for me was color and trees. No I couldn't get my lines very straight but I definitely had fun. So a couple weeks later the art supervisor visited our classroom. She looked at the paintings displayed and commented on each. There was a snicker among the students when she came to mine and she said, "Oh, this one? Yes, it's a little messy but oh the color! The students were hushed. my teacher looked as though she wanted to fall through the floor and I had this wonderful feeling of being completely validated. Thanks for sharing this video ; I enjoy hearing your story about your discoveries in terms of your style.

Ooh, interesting series!! I am brand new to this and am curious how I will be different than everyone else? Right now, I have two small children who want to do it when they see me do it, or just whatever I can do in tiny increments of time and come and add more later? I like painting from the little I have done so far, but that is the hardest for me to do with the mess and time it takes with littles wanting to be in it too. I don't even get to work in my JJ daily yet, but I NEED to if you know what I mean, for self care.

Self care is the whole reason I started journaling and I didn't even know it until much later, but it keeps me sane.
So glad you are along for the journey.
