Sharpening an Axe with Rooster!

- The wealth of axe and tool related knowledge that is Craig "Rooster" Roost came down and helped us film a video about how he sharpens axes.
Rooster is a timber framer, axe junkie, dad, inventor, and axe designer. He's been using and abusing axes for quite some time now and has learned and developed a few tips and techniques that he would love to pass along to his fellow axe enthusiasts!
We at Whiskey River Trading Co thought that we could help him with that and this is our first swing at attempting to do so!
To re-iterate what Rooster says in the video: this is just one way of sharpening an axe. There are many other perfectly acceptable and effective means of sharpening axes. This style of sharpening is his personal preference and over the course of a few years has become ours as well. It's simple and straight forward, hard to screw up, and easy to put in to practice with fantastic results!
This is the first and most likely the longest video in our on going educational relationship with Rooster. We got so much from this video and we think you will too!
Enjoy!
*If the video is not crisp try changing the quality to 720p60hd*
10:39 - start of the sharpening process.

Great video Rooster! Thanks for passing it on!
Watching someone with great skill is just awesome! Thank you for letting us in on some different techniques. Really great to see the filing technique, with the ball on the end for leverage. Very, very Cool!
Great video, Rooster is an American axe legend. Spreading knowledge like wildfire
Great idea using the drywall pads.I will try them. Thanks Craig
Thanks for sharing Rooster!
that filing method, using the ball as a guide, is glorious and brilliant!! the drywall pad for paper too!! i can't wait to finish this video and go buy me a plasticut file
if for nothin else man, that strop setup on denim is unique to him! very cool! i will do alla this for axes and hatchets eternally. glory unto Rooster!
Well thanks for sharing this with us. I look forward to trying this method.
Thank you, Rooster!!! This is a huge help!!
Really good video Rooster!! It was great meeting you and your son!!
I believe the man who came up with the chisel sharpening method you referred to was Paul Sellers.
Great explanation Craig. Thx!
That was scary sharp video!! Loved it Rooster! Thank you,,, now I know what to do !! Getting my new Council Tool ax on Friday
chasing felt pads around my shop floor is a major pastime of mine. Good tip on the baling belt.
why in the hell did I not think of drywall pads for sanding axes. Been wrapping torn off pieces of sandpaper around paint mixing sticks for way too long.
great video trying to see how the handle is made on the top end of the file ?would make draw filing easier with handle both ends and not just on the tang
What a cabin ! That is the dream man. Just nature and a fantastic remote home.
Interesting, I like that it uses everyday equipment.
Awesome Video Man! Thanks Rooster! Getting a new Axe in a few days and gonna put an edge on it using this method.
Awesome video
😎👍cool
Greetings from Germany
I believe that is a magicut also called an American pattern file .great file for that kind of work .
Master Class!
Would stabilizing the axe with a piece below the head help the file dig in better or is the bendyness important to getting the convex edge?
Now that's the real old man wolverine!
somerandom guy Haha sure is! He's just as tough!
What are the wood ball bits that slide onto the file called? Where may I obtain them?
Greeaaat video. Thanks! Looking forward to more fantastic content. 3 questions: which plasti-cut file is that, what are the size of his file balls [haha] , and how is that other (front one?) attached?
Thanks, and keep up the good work!
My questions exactly.
•!Amazon offers 10” and 12” plasti-cut files.
• Golf balls are 1.75” diameter. Is that right for creating the 25° bevel?
• how is the ball attached to the other end of the file?
Thanks Rooster! Hell ya
Man, every time I use the Rooster method I roll the edge. I try to make sure I’m not putting too much pressure on the leading edge of the bit, but I always end up with a super shiny butter knife 😢 Pucks and strops for me...
Wrong angle
Reminds me of my Army Days in Germany. I shaved with my Axes. Nearly got in trouble. Ax too SHARP. VICIOUS SHARP. We were in Vietnam. I was in Germany. Dad taught me to sharpen my Axe...I learned to be Sharp. I’m retired. Thanx
I can't say I've ever done that with my axes besides the occasional patch of arm hair that goes missing due to testing the edge! Thank you for your service!

Looks like some reclaimed Cream City brick there.
falfas55bgas good eye! This is a timber frame warming house that Craig built and the brick is from a long gone local brick manufacturer. A group of community members hand scrubbed all the bricks!
Hey guys I would like to ask if Rooster ever lived in North Carolina?
I worked with a guy named rooster at Bakers Waste Product s in Morganton in NC.
No Sir... Born and raised in Southern Wisconsin. :)
Has anyone figured out the ball is attached to other end of the file?
Where do you source your sandpaper from?
Just the local hardware store!
Scary Sharp!
Joe Holland Fishing it sure is!
Do you sell the file with the balls on them? If so where do I get one.
where do you get the handles on the files from
Hey, why not add affiliate links to some of the stuff you used here?
Bastard file?
Showing this from so far away from the ax doesn’t help with seeing the edge development
Terrible sound
