I had purchased the casette of this great concert in the 1980s Great music indeed!! I think in the casette Mohanam was also played. Now that Lalgudi is no more we are nostalgic
Very high quality music .One gets completely drowned in its great charm .May God bless booth these musicians so that they may continue to lift listeners and fans of classical music to higher levels of consciousness
When I watched this great Jughalbandi of two of the greatest musicians, I couldn't help think whatever happened to our country now! In those days people got together just for music and never thought of one's religion or caste or whatever. We respected each other's religious beliefs and left our beliefs at home. I don't see the same camaraderie anymore!
Boy! Reading this comment in 2023 makes me realize how bad things have gotten since the above comment 9 years ago. The country has definitely gone down in respect and the getting along with each other aspect.
Among the best concert performance I have heard from these masters. What a beautiful presentation of the raaga. It was absolutely thrilling and mind blowing stuff. The swara patterns symbolized the thunderous water flow from Falls. Vintage stuff. I have had the privilege of listtening to the percusionists in a live concert. Great. Thanks for uploading the video. Thanks for uploading the video.
Simhendra Madhyamam is a raga which cannot be rendered easily in the Hindusthani style, as, for example, Mohana or Hamsadhwani or Durga can be. But the genius of Amjad Ali Khan can be seen in his delineation of the Raga here.
@@Prasen1729 Actually, many ragas like Nata do not exist within the framework of Hindustani music. That is not the case here, but I think OP is going historically, ragas like mohanam have been explored extensively in Hindustani and Carnatic alike, maybe not so much ragas such as simhendramadhyamam.
Don't agree. Simhendra madhyamam is one of the most flexible ragas to be handled in music, unlike a Todi or a Bhairavi or even an Athaana, which are exclusively for Carnatic music. This raga is best suited for all kinds of music. Including western music.
AN IMMORTAL SONG OF RABINDRANATH TAGORE IN SIMHENDRA-MADHYAMAM: "DOORE BAAJE KARUNA SURE TABA CHARANA-TALA-CHIMBITA PANTHA-VEENAA......" - THE PATH-WAY-LUTE - KISSING THE DUSTS OF YOUR SOLE - LIES IN A DISTANCE - RESONATING IN PENSIVE MUSE. SA, RE, KOMAL-GA, PRATI-MA, PA, KOMAL DHA, SHUDDHA-NI IS THE SCALE.
I couldn't believe it on that rather they could be limited just as a human in our ideology, and this is an incredible incident like which wouldn't be repeated by the history again! - and excuse me for my akward english...
@arbir its very much like pluckng chikari string on Sitar... it adds a very beautiful touch to the note... :) dis is also done in violin by plucking d upper Shadja, by some violinist :)
Look at the initial settling in time taken - that itself indicates, they are not in a hurry to just create a superficial impact and finish the 'task' at hand. maestros would be keen to present their respective styles in a reasonable time! Nowadays, sometimes, from the word go - there is acrimony or some restlessness to ensure that 'applause effects' are created..which is not necessary.
Percussion instruments, especially mridangam, is easy influenced by tempreture. therefore, tuning it on stage gives the best tone at the time. Also its paired to the tone of the violin and any other instrment thats played at that concert.
@arbir I'm not exactly sure why, but it is for the same reason that many strings are plucked when playing the veena. It may be to maintain that sruthi?
While presenting the raag Simhendra Madhymam, kaka Ashoke Kumar just laughs out naturally, thinking "what is that supposed to mean? i never heard of it". And Jaya comes on stage with a continuation of that laugh. :-D
I guess Mr. Ashok Kumar could not pronounce the word "Simmendra Madhyaam" correctly and he laughed due to his inability to pronounce it up to the mark. And that is all.
+jakob cohen The scale if of Kirwani except the madhyam - tiwra madhyam here and of todi except for the rishab - suddha rishab here. That is why the scale is similar to Todi and kirwani.
Listening to these great stalwarts brings great peace to the mind.Gid bless!👋👌👍🙏🌷🌹❤

Hello Sir, Can you kindly upload the Mohanam Jugalbandi audio to UA-cam?
What is beautiful here is that two languages are speaking with each other without sacrifice of their characteristics or nuances.
Im a straight up white boy from America and even I can appreciate this traditional Indian music!!!!!!! Wow, just wow!!!!!!
Well, an Indian like me can appreciate BB King and Jascha Heifetz. That's the beauty of great music. It unites people across the world.

Don't be judgmental about it. Any raaga can be be it Carnatic or Hindustani. :-) If you know it how to render.

Why can't all performers tune their instruments back stage before they open the curtains to the audience? .......The performance is wonderful
