From Exclusive Pumping Back to the Breast at 10 Weeks Postpartum - My Top Tips

  • **Lots of comments asking about cold turkey and what I did when baby would get fussy and refuse the breast - I would just settle him, and calm myself down, just using a soothing voice for myself and for him, maybe try and go for a little walk around the house or a 10 min walk out of the house around the block, and then try again later. One suggestion given to me was to give myself a time limit - so if 30 mins after I have tried to feed, he wouldn't, then I could do a bottle - I never had to use the time limit because I never "forced" him to feed. Just offered the breast. Again, I'm not a IBCLC, so seek their medical suggestions first. My son was also full term 75th percentile and 10 weeks old, so baby is slightly different! Be gentle with yourself mama x
    This is how George and I went from exclusive pumping back to direct breastfeeding at 10 weeks postpartum.

    This video seriously changed our life. SO motivating! A lot of hard work …but I would watch this over and over when I felt like giving up. My NICU baby went from exclusively bottle feeding/ and me exclusively pumping to exclusively breastfeeding. (At 4months!) There is no greater feeling than to be on the other side Love you thank you!!❤❤❤

    Thank you for your video! It was highly encouraging to continue trying. My baby was was 6 weeks when we got over bottle preference and back to breast feeding. I got a bottle that looked more like a breast ( Emulait) which helped a lot. And after testing that bottle I kept an eye to watch for a stress free time when he was fed an hour ago or so and try latching then. One day he just got it and it was so rewarding. If he didn’t want the breast I didn’t push it but gently offered it again when he was fed or after a few seconds with the bottle. Take out the bottle and latch to my breast. Bait and switch. The frustrating part was putting the breast in his mouth and him knocking it out while trying to latch. Just hold baby a little closer when you’ve lined up the nipple to the mouth ( not shoving their head to the chest like pediatrician and lactation consultant were doing) just a firm but gentle hold to let baby know don’t move the breast is in the mouth. Flipper technique was essential for this!!! Thanks again!

I tried this today and she only slept on me. Would wake up as soon as I put her down. I guess I am not supposed to put her down but I also have a toddler so it's hard. First off, Thank you for this video. This video has been immensely informative and supportive for my wife’s journey back to breastfeeding.
    Q1 - Feeding Frequency: Our little one is almost 6 weeks old. The readings say normal breastfeeding frequency for 1-2 months old are 7-9 times a day. If you can recall, When you first transitioned to breastfeeding did you notice that this level of frequency was higher initially? 9-12
    If so, when did you see this level of frequency normalize?
    Q2 - Feeding Duration: Also, we are noticing his feeding duration is approaching an 1.5 hrs as he fusses, what was the duration of your feeding?
    Typical reading for feeding duration is 30-45 min (15-20 min each side), we are noticing 1.5 hr for feeding before he falls asleep. Did you see his feeding duration fall to this amount?

    • @ZigFitMama
      @ZigFitMama  2 роки тому

      Hi! In all honesty, it was almost 5 years ago 😅 so I can’t really remember. I actually just let go a lot of that stuff because it was adding to my anxiety, and I just tried to follow demand feeding and check diaper output rather than focusing on how often or frequent he was feeding. I was just “offer the breast” and see what would happen.
      I’m not a lactation consultant, so some of my info won’t be medically accurate! But I personally don’t think my baby ever really nursed for 15-20 mins each side. I think it was more like 5-10, then might need to feed again after an hour.
      I think 1.5hrs sounds about right to start winding down for a nap! This is what we did for my second child from about 4-6 months before he started stretching longer during the daytime. The first 4 months I really just let baby lead the way before I did any routines or timing schedules
      Sorry that my memory isn’t more helpful 😅 and I’m glad this video has helped!

    This is super helpful, but Im wondering about the cold turkey transition. My baby is willing to take the breast but clearly not transferring milk, so im exclusively pumping. I think if I just stopped bottle feeding he would starve, cry and pull away from the breast since he’s not getting any milk out. But I’m pumping as much as he eats!

      This might be one for a lactation consultant if he isn't transferring milk. I also updated the video description to talk about the cold turkey transition - hope that helps! I think its normal for them to pull away from the breast as they are re-learning how to breastfeed, and our job just to stay calm, comfort them, comfort and calm ourselves down, and then try again. After about 4-5 weeks my baby started refusing bottles and only wanted the boob it was nice but there were times when I wish someone else could feed her and if I pumped she would just waste my milk now she’s 2.5 years old and still not fully weened I’m having another baby in about 5 weeks and this last 6 weeks I’m aggressively trying to cut my 2 year old off but I wanna buy a new wireless pump but no sure if I’ll need it as all babies are different. I will say it was nice to be free from a pump as my first pregnancy was twins and I was on the pump around the clock they took both bottle and boob and weened at 9 months with no problems

    So by cold turkey do you mean you cut off bottles for good? And what did you do when he got very hungry and was fussy? Would you keep trying? I tried doing that but he would get more angry and refuse it. Although I was advised to cut off bottles for food. But that felt really cruel and it hurt to see him crying… so after trying for like 10-20 minutes I’d give him a bottle. But I keep trying dor every feed.

      I mentioned it in the video - I gave myself a time limit and then if he wouldn’t nurse within that time limit I would give him the bottle. So you can set that time limit for yourself based on your care providers guidance - all babies are different ages and have different nutritional needs, growth charts etc. So I would consult your doctor or a lactation consultant on what a suitable time limit would be. Thank you for sharing… My baby is 4weeks old and my problem is I want her to settle being breastfed but she cries 5 mins after being on the breast for over 20min each.. if that. I’ve been giving her formula after when she cries because sometimes she’ll cry whilst being on the breast but happy and she drinks 4oz on the bottle and in my head am like she can’t be getting enough if she’s drinking that much from the bottle after being breastfed for that long. But when she comes off the breast I can see milk in her month (she sleeps with her mouth open) or in one corner of her lip sometimes she’ll puke it up when burped too so she’s getting some but still wants and wants should I just trust that she’s getting enough and discard the bottle and just breastfeed, breastfeed, breastfeed ? As I feed her on demand anyway, plus she don’t hurt my nipples at all is her suction strong enough. I don’t know if she’s swallowing but I can feel and hear the pulling but swallowing every couple pull if that makes sense any advice please 🙏🏾
