    I finally have some clarity in what the Victorian era meant. Coming from Ooty in the Nilgiries, it had so much of British influence especially because of the staff college of the army. My Indian Maharashtrian grandfather made his fortunes during that time. My father constantly spoke of king George this and queen Victoria all the time. To the extent of having 13 taxis taxis and a bakery all combined for the weekend use of the British at that time .Born in 1957 after our independence of India it was difficult to understand my fathers times. Your video has given me a tremendous insight into what that ERA meant especially when I traveled to London. It made sense why we had all the tube stations names, Charing cross,Marlybourne etc ,school building& uniforms,how much I knew of all the Br car names then. One was so confused.Thank you so so much for making me understand this unique era in free independent India.

    This is awesome! I really enjoyed this. Shared it with my high school senior class as we begin studying the Victorian Era in literature. I found it to be quite informative and it definitely built great conversation. I typically loved the comparison in length of leadership around the world. Germany with seven rulers and America with 18. That can shape societal ideals over time. It can take away from political stability.

    In my opinion what Mr Will points out it is not exclusive of the Victorian era. Almost all european countries were Monarchies and they had the aristocratic class and the others with exactly the same characteristics and problems since their destiny was traced at birth. But the morality issue is indeed peculiar of the Victorian era and it consisted basically in the repression of sexuality , They become so puritanic that it was not possible even to say or write breast but only "white meat". We already know the reppercusions of sexual repression and in my opinion this explains the high rate of prostitution they had in that era since almost one third of the women were prostitutes and it is very possible the aristocrats were their more frequent visitors. Another thing that surprises me is the great number of British politics and actors who are gays but according to the education they received they kept their homosexuality indoors . During the fifties many gay men were sent to prison.

    • @belindagammage6855

      I teach sex education and I find sexual repression has had a poor effect on society. Hiding and shaming sexuality only causes us to pervert it even more.

      Rabiya Fatima Thank you for the question. A great place to start is the British Library. Check out this list: www.bl.uk/romantics-and-victorians/authors.

      Rabiya Fatima My pleasure. Here is some information about the different literary periods in American history. Notice that, in the beginning (first couple hundred years), American literature is based on styles found in British literature.

    How would they justify so many women working in factories if the women were supposed to stay home with the children?

    • @MrWillsClassroom
      @MrWillsClassroom  4 роки тому +1

      Good question, Joy Devor.
      Like the Great Chain of Being, all humans had their place: lower class, middle class, upper class. The idea that women stayed at home was an IDEAL that only the upper class - and some middle class - families could afford.
      The upper class celebrated their wealth and status by celebrating when their women didn’t work.
      The other side of that is those who could not afford to have one adult stay home were made to feel ashamed.
