While the likes of Janet Jackson, Madonna , and Whitney Houston was battling it out as who the Queen of the 1980's, this Super Diva was carving her niche as a powerhouse vocalist and dancer and pop sensation! This is my favorite video of Jody Watley. Did you notice....Jody was voging way before Madonna. And, in black and white!
Not sure why this wasn't as big as some of her other singles. I think this is the best one. A nice, funky jam and she sounds good singing in a lower register.
Big hair, big forehead and big earrings. I wanted to be her sooo bad in the 80's!! Dancing up and down those stairs without looking I would've tumbled all the way the hell down!! You go Ms. Watley
Several visual elements of this underrated and underappreciated 1987 video preceded two iconic videos of the time: 1. It featured voguing before Madonna's "Vogue" (1990). 2. The industrial scenes in this video came before the industrial setting of Janet Jackson's "Rhythm Nation" (1989). 3. All three videos were in black and white.
What makes Jody Watley a UNIQUE Diva is because we WATCHED her grow from dancing on Soul Train as a young girl and later a young woman, perform in Shalamar, and EXPLODE as a solo artist. She has always had great songs NO FILLERS in sight. Watley is a Living Legend. @jodywatley
@Ramon Hart Yaaaassss, hunty! Jody was a BAD B1TCH! She didn't really get the credit she deserved. She was no Aretha or Patti vocally, but her music and production quality was ON POINT for a Pop Artist. Janet was bad, but all of stuff had to be elaborately choreographed. Jody could be in a video or on stage movin all by herself.
I love this video too. The beat is everything .She danced on those steps without missing a beat. LOVE her black leather jacket I would rock that today and that chain belt ..Go head Jody!
6/6/2020 Rest easy, Tyrone “The Bone” Proctor. A dance/choreography legend and former Soul Train dancer. Jody and Tyrone have been good friends for decades. Most often on Soul Train, when you saw Jody & Jeffrey (Daniel), you also saw Tyrone and his regular partner, Sharon Hill (Woods) not far away. Jody featured Tyrone in this video where they beautifully demonstrated the marriage of locking and waacking throughout their choreography.❤️💫✨ For those who think they are voguing: this style of dance is called waacking. Waack dancing has been going on at least since the early 1970s. If you go back and watch those 70s clips of Soul Train, especially during the mid-late 70s, you will see Tyrone, Sharon, Jeffrey, and Jody used to mix waack dancing in with several other moves. Also, just want to mention that Tyrone once stated that Waack was a west coast dance mostly performed to Disco/R&B type of music; whereas Vogue was an east coast dance mostly performed to House music.
Simply awesome, how could you not like this song?, love how deep and rich her voice is in this one, nearly 30 years later and it still sounds great, a fierce woman.

Many years ago after the song was released in BET interview Andrea Cymone & Jody Watley mentioned in the studio version, Andrea played all the bass & had Wendy Melvion assist with playing the funk rhythm guitar which wasn't credited by choice. Ironically both Andrea & Wendy were both a major part of Prince band. Additionally, both Wendy & Lisa sang along background on Andre Cymone "Dance Electric" the funk jam originally recorded, written & produced by the PURPLE ONE himself.
It was a huge on the R&B charts since it peaked at #2. As far as pop/crossover, it was far less successful. It stalled at #56. I actually remember hearing this song quite often on R&B radio back in '87.
Red dress is by Jean Paul Gaultier. Amazing designer she wore a lot in her videos (the red crop bomber with the studded sleeves in Don't You Want Me and the oversized black men's blazer in Real Love are his too....)

One of the best individual performance music videos, along with Knock on Wood by Amiiee Steward. People forget about how great of a dancer Jody was (and her beauty). This album was a precursor to Janet Jackson's Rythm Nation, speaking to women's empowerment. This should have 100 millions views!
Iconic artistic video and yes one of the best ever. This preceded Rhythm Nation but came after Control 1986 which was Janet Jackson's early statement on women's self-determination and her own empowerment.

Andre and Jody made beautiful slamming music together. He produced some of his best music with his music "Muse",,,,Jody....Andre and Prnce created the Miniappolis sound heard in this song..Andre plays the instuments on this record. I once heard a well known Music engineer from ATL....A.S.. (who is a bass player) say that Andre Cymone is one of the best bass players ever..... Some say Prince assisted behind the scene with Jody's album....Prince and Cymone style is so much in tune with the other because they came up from grade school together. Andre was always the band leader in school..Prince was the 1st to get signed to the big league so we saw cymone as the bass player...Prince knew andre was much more than that...Andre had to do his own thing as well.

Wow, I loved Jody back in the day!!!
R.I.P. Tyrone Proctor. You were one of Soul Train's greatest dancers.
