Early to mid-90s, I use to do a lot trips like that, what a blast it was... good friends, good views....... unfortunately, life has a way to entangle us with work and life itself...... need to get back on the saddle
Same - I remember doing this with just an 85-litre framed backpack to carry all our gear, and none of it was lightweight! Budget tent, wool blanket, 6xD-cell Maglite torch... It was so spontaneous back then. It's harder as an adult because the days of preparation, travel and cleanup are not easy to get in the calendar! You have to make the commitment and then it happens.
My home turf, and I echo the sentiment that 26 inch wheels are far from done! I have a 2003 Saracen Element 3 (which I rescued from a skip!) on 26 inch wheels which squeezes into my little Transit Connect campervan. I have a modern day 29er and an ebike, but the old bike does seems to do the job a little better, and the x3 gearing is welcome for unexpected climbs.
Always good to hear about another bike rescued from landfill. I agree those old bikes somehow feel more versatile (certainly easier to put in a car or small van) and you do find yourself glad of that small chainring!
@@red_dread check out.. ebike adventures ...and see how much fun this dude is having...Man ive just purchased one for my full suspension bike...(giant Anthem ) as this guy is having to much fun and i want to join in ... 750 w ..motor leads to speeds of 60kph and 45 kph up hills...Im getting to old now so time to get a ebike kit..🙋
Nice ride / I’d rather be spinning 26 inch wheels with a 3x up front on hilly territory. Packing up 26 inch bikes for boat or plane travel is a bonus. 29ers really become a problem in small living spaces and traveling with.
Thanks - that’s another good point, when you’re travelling you don’t want your bike to be too unwieldy. There’s something so chuckable about a good steel 26er.
There was a lot of singing out on those trails. I hope the estate of the late George Michael doesn't come after me for unlicensed reproduction of his song.
Wow this is extremely beautiful bike!!!
Thanks, it remains one of my all-time favourites. It goes on some fabulous adventures.
Fantastic - I wish I could have come along
You might have struggled with the pace

Lovely bike, lovely location, great adventure 👍
It was unforgettable, that's for sure. I don't think I'll change anything next time.
Beautiful bike....A DIY...Bafang mid drive would have made your trip a lot more fun going up those hills...cheers.🙋
I may be a physical wreck but thankfully things aren't that bad just yet!

A fillet brazed 853 frame? Gorgeous.
It is stunning - I had to wrap it in tape to stop the bags from scratching the lovely pearly finish!

My bike its a late 80's frame and everything 2020's apart from the stem and handlebar
What frame is it?
Nice 👍 Was someone singing Careless Whisper in keeping with the retro stylings??😮😅😂👍

@@red_dread 🤣😂😅
The colour matching of the gloves with the front bag stipe was a nice touch 👍...perhaps matching socks next time as well or is that a wee bit OTT 🤔😄
A lot of thought goes into those outfits
Love it👍
Yo i use thomson too! For the Saddle!
Definitely my favourite stems and seatposts
Looks like a great trip. Stunning scenery. What was the ratio of tarmac to off road?
I'd say it was about 50/50 - very little tarmac with actual cars and very little bumpy rough/rocky stuff, mostly in between. Lots of gravel tracks.
who needs to roll 10% faster and therefore look like shit on a modern Gravelbike, I'd prefer a 90s beauty anyday and gracefully ride in style :D
I'd say those boys on 700c rolled quite a lot faster, but you are correct: elegance is all.
The white MTB is no vintage. Modern XT groupset and 26" were sold until 2013.
I built it in 2015. It's one of my most "modern" bikes in my whole collection - but still 100% obsolete.
