Thanks for this review, but I think you underestimate the 1973 theatrical release. It's a satisfying western and an elegantly made film. The preview cuts are raw and unfinished and in need of editing, and fascinating for all that. The 50th Anniversary Release amplified the core story be reinstating cut scenes that are judiciously edited. I could watch it all day. Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid is brilliant in all its versions. Be sure to crank the sound ALL THE WAY UP.
I couldn't stand the 50th anniversary intro. Peckinpah' s version is much better.
Looking forward to picking this up when it goes on sale (prices in Canada are ridiculous). I'm glad that Criterion opted to spread out the love onto 2 discs apiece considering they're notorious for compression. More Peckinpah on 4K please.
I have not seen this film. I'm late to the party. I love The Ballad of Cable Hogue as well as The Wild Bunch. I'm going to pick this up as soon as possible. Thank you for your thoughts on this release. Happy Independence Day!

Just a wonderful release!! I'm partial to the 2nd preview cut even with it being rough and unfinished. Gives it extra character and feels like someone stole it for me🤣
