  • We had four different Victoria 3 players talk about their home countries and how they are depicted in the game. Covering Britain, Austria, Turkey and Nigeria, they drew different conclusions as to how well the countries are represented, and talked about what they like and dislike about playing as them.

As a moroccan. I was kinda surprised they just put Morocco s modern borders minus the Sahara , while it was stretching sub Algeria and arround Mauritania local tribes from these regions pledged loyalty to the sultan. Morocco's actual borders are made after the loss against France and post colonization.

As a New Zealander I'm very dissatisfied with how they've handled New Zealand. We're supposed to be separate colony from New South Wales by 1841 and a self governing colony by 1852 but I've never seen it happen. There's potential for really interesting history and alt history with the tail end of the musket wars, the treaty of Waitangi and the start of the New Zealand wars.

As as swede I am quite satisfied with how sweden is portrayed. Paradox is after all swedish. My only pet peeve is that the swedish royal family keeps the french culture after Karl Johan Bernadotte. After him all swedish monarchs should have swedish as their culture, they did not keep speaking french except for karl johan.

What desire to industrialize and capacity to engage in foreign policy were overlooked?

The worst thing in the game is that you can develop any country, no matter how backwards and bad it was irl, into a superpower just by joining a big market like Russia, and just build factories. The worst you could do is reach GDP per capita of the major European powers because they don't really develop at all.

I'm half Kazakh and I have lived majority of my life in Kazakhstan, although I live in the UK right now. I must say that the Kazakh Khanate is portrayed rather too insignificant in comparison to reality in Victoria 3. In 1712, Kazakh Khanate waged war against the Dzungar Khanate, which failed and resulted in Dzungar counter-invasion. Later, the war concluded in 1756 when The Qing Dynasty destroyed and annexed the war-torn Dzungar Khanate, alongside with their occupied territories of Zhetysu, and Almaty Region. Even though the Kazakh Khanate was severely exhausted by the war, it is worth noting that it had a structure of power, a powerful Khan, the 3 Juzes (groups of subordinate tribes) as a societal structure, and authority valid enough to declare wars and negotiate diplomatically for more than 100 years before the 1836 start date. Without a doubt, Kazakh Khanate wouldn't have been the mightiest nation, but its portrayal as an empty nation within Victoria 3 is quite innacurate.

As a Spaniard, I hate that there's a "Spanish" culture, Spain is a multicultural country and that is not portrayed, and ok, they may not be cultures but nationalities, so representing the nationalist movements of the time, but then Occitan and Galician should be removed since they had no nationalist movements at the time. Also, Cuba is protrayed as some sort of dominion while in reality it was controlled as part of Spain. "Spanish" culture being the cosmopolitan culture they spread to their colonies, versus the breakaway Mexicans, Cubans, Colombians, Bolivians, etc. Dude, it's like complaining there's a "French" culture or an "English" culture despite those nations being internally diverse and divided. Sure, Spain's MORE internally diverse/divided (Aragonese and Castilian) but the only culture that actually matters in a nation when you're playing a grand strategy game are the ones that will try to break away from you if you piss them off too much. That's why Scotland, Ireland and Wales can break off from Britain, but not Mercia. Why Occitania and Brittany can break away from France, but not Orleans... Why there's only Yankee, Dixie and Cajun in the USA cultures instead of different emergent cultures for each individual state which is ACTUALLY how people saw themselves before the Civil War.
And don't even get me started on the fucking laundry list of cultures they just condensed down into "North German" and "South German" that should be able to fragment off through revolt. You literally prove exactly why there's only "Spanish" culture in your own comment. As a *_Spaniard_* you hate that there's a "Spanish" culture. Not as a Castilian or Aragonese, or wherever else in your nation you're from. Your first descriptor that comes to mind is Spaniard. That is why there's only the Spanish culture, the stable national identity over regional identity.
And trust me, if the Quebecois were just crushed down into a "Canadian" culture instead of Anglo-Canadian and Franco-Canadian being separate, and they were making the comment instead of you about their culture, they're not going to start the comment with "As a Canadian", it's going to be "As a Quebecer/Quebecois". Sorry if this comes off as angry nitpicking, but so does _your_ comment.

Back home you learn how the Ottoman Empire collapsed so much, we have an entire class dedicated for it. As hard as Ottomans are in Vic3, they are too easy imho. Tanzimat reforms go down easy once you can do them. Also western powers do not really do anything enough in the Middle East and North Africa, which make your job easier. I think they need to model English and French interests in MENA, and Russian Interests on Orthodox parts of the Empire and really put the thumb on the player with internal and external problems without respite and mercy.

16:34 that's just false, the Saarland was part of the German Empire as it was part of Prussia. It was occupied by France and Britain as a league of Nations mandate as per the Versailles treaty, but eventually it was returned after a plebiscite. It was occupied by France again after WW2 and after a referendum it rejoined Germany in 1957. So no, it wasn't independent from the whole of Germany until 1957, it was Just occupied from 1945 to 1957.

I'm portuguese and I have to say that, although Portugal is not badly depicted, it is missing a lot of flavour. The mainland in my opinion would deserve 4 states instead of 3. The number of states for smaller nations (e.g. Netherlands, Switzerland) could be bigger over all. As explained in the game the country just finished a terrible civil war between a liberal faction and an absolutist faction. The liberals won and that is why Portugal has Queen Maria as ruler and it is not an Autocracy. However the country already had a formed parliament and elections, so I wounder if oligarchy should be the correct form of power distribution. Portugal lost its most important colony, Brazil just 15 years before. This represented a significant economic loss for Portugal and made the country to focus on its African colonies. The trade agreement with GB and its high dependency on manufactured British goods is well portrayed since, Portugal lagged in industrialisation due to the heavy impact of the Napoleonic wars and the Portuguese civil war. Although the relation with Britain was officially an alliance, I believe that due to its mechanics, a defensive pact is the most correct way to depict it in the game, since Portugal never joined Britiain in any of its offensive wars. Queen Maria married a German Prince, Ferdinand of Coburg, which was a cousin of Prince Albert. She and Queen Victoria were about the same age and they exchanged a lot of letters. The overseas colonies however would benefit of some rework. And in fact an overall of the African nations would enrich the gameplay experience of Portugal as well. Portugal had more territories in India than just Goa. Actually Goa was big enough to be a "state" and any of the other Indian colonies could be a treaty port (Daman or Diu) instead. The island of São Tomé in West Africa deserves to be a separate territory from North Angola and have a good bonus on coffee or Cacao production since it was one of the biggest producers of them.

Well, Italy is handled ok but it lacks a lot of flavor
Firstly, I believe Charles Albert of Sardinia should have the reformist ideology whilst still being part of the landowners for various reform he did for example the Statuto Albertino which gave a constitution to the Kingdom of Piedmont (in game it should change one or two laws, like adopting freedom of conscience) that was only abolished after the second world war and the Fusione Perfetta, which handled bureucracy in Sardinia.
I don't think there are any mentions of Mazzini (Intelligentsia, Radical) and Cavour (Industrialists, Reformer or Nihilist), as well other risorgimental heroes (The game should 100% make a distinction between the head of state and the head of government in non autocratic parliamentarian republics and non autocratic monarchies) politicians and other famous people such as Freud and Marx should also be able to exist in the game even if they don't lead any IGs)
Giuseppe Verdi, Alessandro Manzoni, Giacomo Leopardi, Giovanni Verga and other important and known artists, poets, composers and writers might appear as characters or just be quoted in events giving small bonuses to prestige, loyalists and worsening austrian opinion depending on the events
If an italian nation conquered Rome and unified Italy, the Catholic Church IG should mald a lot and the Pope itself should declare open warfare to the new Kingdom of Italy, like he did historically by convincing catholics not to go voting and disdain the new Italy. Italy should then have a journal entry to appease the Pope, adopt or retain State Religion and create Vatican City like what did Mussolini in 1929 after the Patti Lateranensi or fight the Church by not having the Devouts in the government for a set period of time and having total separation
Italy can't ally France by giving them Savoy and the city of Nice in exchange for their military support against Austria for Lombardy and Venetia, Italy should also be able to make Italia Irredenta claims on dalmatia and other places
The Intelligentsia IG in every italian state might be renamed to Carboneria or something like that, which was a republican and lowkey masonic secret society, patriotic and republican and when Italy is formed it should change name to Intelligentsia again
The South shouldn't be the one to reunify Italy every time and should have flavor events regarding the first railway of Italy which was built by them, their government must be inferior and more reactionary to the one of sardinia (it was a shithole) and should start repressing the intelligentsia like Russia and France at the start date, also I would straight up give them serfdom
The formation of a strong anarchist society in Italy and/or an high number of radical pops might spawn in Gaetano Bresci (Trade Unions, Anarchist) that would shot and kill the King of Italy. who historically was Umberto I.
The parties I've seen are the Right (conservative) the Left (liberal) and the Far Left (radical), I have never seen the devout party but if these names are used they should be called Cattolici Conservatori or Far Right.
All of these are more political factions during a period of italian history in which democracy in Italy was more of a conservative noble vs liberal bourgeoise diarchy then a real democracy, they were not organised political parties so their name should definitely be changed after the rise of mass parties, historically speaking after Giolitti's electoral laws, so when the player enacts census suffrage or universal suffrage
    They might become the following:
Left -> Partito Liberale Democratico Italiano (a bit unhistorical because it was founded only in 1919, but there are no better candidates)
Right -> Partito Liberale Italiano or Unione Liberale
Far Left -> Partito Radicale Italiano
Far Right -> Partito Popolare Italiano
Communist Party -> Partito Comunista d'Italia
Unnamed rural folk party -> Partito dei Contadini d'Italia
Unnamed armed forces party -> Associazione Nazionalista Italiana
Mussolini should spawn in game with an event regarding his expulsion from the socialist party after researching political agitation or when Italy joins a diplomatic play after a set date, and he should become the fascist leader of the petit bourgeoise or the armed forces. This event would ideally give some clout to the petit bourgeoise and if possible found a fascist party called Partito Nazionale Fascista or even better Fasci di Combattimento, which would be renamed Partito Nazionale Fascista for example after their takeover of Italy.

As someone from Algeria, i found it extremely disappointing that Algeria exists on the map of victoria 3. I know this might be surprising, but bare with me here.
Algeria used to be a turkish regency before the french occupation, it was not very centralized and had many vassals, the largest of which were the beys, numbering three. After occupation, the beys largely became their own independent entities, which were not algeria, but the beylik of constantine and the beylik of oran and algiers. Now, the only surviving beylik by 1836 was the beylik of constantine, which should be on the map. The beylik of oran had collapsed to the native warlord abdelkader, which ruled as general of the believers.
The Mokranis, alligned with the french in kabylia, already semi independent since before the occupation, do not get any representation either, despite their massive role in the later mokrani revolt, which claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands in Algeria and ended the autonomy of parts of algeria to create what most people understand to be the historic "integral part of france" algeria.
Basically, algeria should be divided threefold by game start, not even including saharan warlords such as tuggurt which were vassals of the regency but existed as late as 1881.
Even the updated algeria is not very accurate. The borders of the mokrani kingdom are way too big and weirdly mirror the borders of the revolt itself, which i believe they used?

Victoria 3 still feels like a barebone system.
I can't wait until there is some expansion content, because it's simply boring to have all countries, cultures and religions abide to same schematics and structures.
The shortest end of the stick are cultures who do not have a state at the start.
As the civil wars are mostly battled for the government, not the independence. We see no great Polish uprisings, no Mongolian dissent, no Irish rebellions, nor any showing the force of the people rebelling against opression, if their state is not present at the start.
It's the biggest problem there is, as 19th century is the era of nationalism, springs of revolution, socialist uprisings, states being toppled, empires crumbling. But in Vic 3, the revolutionaries just want to take the seat of power in the empire they despise? not dismantle it?

From a portuguese point of view the mainland is portrayed well, we were really bad economically in that time. But i've never liked the portrayal of the colonies and further colonization of the african interior. Because of malaria it would take a lifetime in game to colonize a little piece of land but as far as we get teached in history that was never really a problem, at least for us portuguese.

As a Pole, i hate how the game doesnt represent the Polish uprisings of the 19th century as well as well as only featuring Polish culture in Congress Poland and Poznan areas, with no Polish corridor in Pomerelia or Wilno. I am Turkish and although the Ottoman Empire was in their worst state in this era and this is somewhat accurately depicted, I expected more flavor from a game that is supposed to capture the essence of a hundred years of rapid developement. There is no content for the Turkish war of independence or any kind of post Great War content. In fact there is no Great War whatsoever. Every game I play is a number go up simulator. No significant change ever happpens. There is trench warfare and technologies regarding the era but in my games I can't seem to encounter large battles. Austria never forms Austria-Hungary, Meiji restoration rarely happens and there is no large border change overall(disregarding Africa). The game is quite unsatisfactory and I just can't be bothered to work so hard to transform the Ottoman Empire into a Republic if I am not rewarded with a World War that changes the balance of power. Nowadays I just try to achieve a certain goal. Recently I made Oranje, a boer state, a capitalist heaven enacting wealth voting and supporting laissez faire subsequently making the rich richer. That goal provided me the fun I needed. I did this in the 1.2 Beta and the patch seems to bring many needed features. I can only hope paradox continues to improve upon the game.

They completely butcher the Malay Sultanate. For example, in my home state of Kelantan, in Victoria 3 the Kelantan Sultanate alongside Terengganu, Kedah Sultanate and Patani Sultanate, is depicted as a province in Siam but in real life, we should be a tributary Vassals of Siam. The northern Malay Sultanates pays the Siamese with Bunga Emas (Gold Flowers) This tribute consisted of two small trees made of gold and silver, accompanied by luxury items such as weapons, cloth and servants as a token of friendship and the King of Siam considered it a recognition of their power. I think this is intentional from Paradox to sell more DLC featuring the SEA Sultanate and other kingdoms in other regions.

Im turkish and the ottomans are too easy to industrialize. The landowners had crippled the nation so hard that nobody had the money or permission to open factories. The dying nation did not get any foreign investments either so the ottomans had to purge the army (janissaries were also anti industry) and weaken the landowners by risking his throne (Mahmud II.) after partially getting the power to finally industrialize it was already too late. The debt and the wars lost made it impossible for the ottomans to regain their respect from the global powers. Barely industrialized and its basically starving population made the ottoman empire a pretty bad country and extremely vulnerable to any incoming threats. From my experience growing the ottoman gdp is too easy. With an annually growth of roughly 5% you can easily overcome the stupid ai without seizing any land apart from egypt and colonization. The ottomans need to be nerfed if the intention is to make it historical.

Serbia as a state at the time had some very interesting and unique laws especially regardins small agricultural holdings, as well as one of the first and most liberal constitutions in the world, though short lived due to pressure from foreign powers and the Ottomans. Add to that a complex internal power struggle and straddling between multiple foreign powers and you have a dynamic and complex experience that was horribly misrepresented and content deprived.
