  • Discussion on how we grow out our nucs using double deeps to get foundation drawn better. Also brief discussion on the overwintered nuc configuration.

You aren't the first person to say that the 5 frame build tall system would outperform a wide colony set up instead. I'm very interested in this kind of setup myself.
    Thanks for the videos.

I overwinter double deckers every year and have great success. They almost always out perform my “full” hives.

Another great video. When do you make your nucs that you overwinter?

It’s really all over the place. Some are left over nucs that I just keep splitting nucs off of all year. Some are combined mating nucs at the end of the season. Typically have the ones I’m gonna have by September.

Do you see any difference in performance if you were to install a package in to the 2 story nuc configuration? B/c of bees tendency to like to build up and not out?

The two-story nuc would grant you better expansion in the beginning with a package. They will draw the comb better and it allows them to use the rising heat to expand brood more quickly.

It is early August what do you think is the latest date to do a split on a full hive my brood is a deep an medium 8 frame Was not really planning to do one but was just thinking maybe just to plan if I was to lose one thru winter 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️. Thanks

I don’t recommend splits past the first day of July. Im not saying they can’t be done, but it becomes quite difficult to get them right before cold weather.

@@DysonApiaries I would have to say it depends on the fall flows and the queens ability to lay enough brood for those flows. Healthy hives with little mite infestation also goes a long way. I've split hives and did queen cells in mid July and they overwintered in a four frame nuc. It was a cold winter in my part of Pennsylvania and I took a chance. It did work, but I wouldn't risk it that way again.
