These guys actually opened for Cult of Luna when I saw them in Toronto a few years back for the Mariner Tour with Julie Christmas.

That's a wild combination of sounds. I can see how it kind of works though for a concert.

Good morning from New England...This is much more than mere hip hop...They mix in beats within a sound scape that keeps your attention..And that drop hit like a brick!!! I can see a band like this opening for many different bands from metal (core) to ambient rave-like scenes to straight up Hip Hop...Good stuff..Peace from the Northeast ...

Never been a fan of theirs, but I made a super fan of theirs day ...
One of their fans flew from the UK to Sacramento in order to visit all the places they played, and all the places they shot their videos, but they couldnt find the location of the location of the "Flies" video. They posted to the local subreddit asking if anyone knew where it was, and included a screenshot. I glanced at the image, and was all "oh, that's my neighbors parking lot". I didnt want to straight up give the address (wanted them to work for it), so I gave them more of a riddle ... the next day, I saw them out there basically having a religious experience.

I've heard one or two of their tracks in livestreams but haven't had a chance to properly dig into one yet. Definitely need to get them on the channel proper one of these days.

@@CriticalReactions Hi Bryan, I suggest then those tracks maybe to start with : "Guillotine (it goes yah)" studio version, or the crazy Light & Sound festival live version, then of course "No Love", "Get Got", "The fever (Aye, Aye) ", the catchy "Death Grips is on line" , or the more palatable as well (kinda flamboyant rock vibe included) maybe "On GP", and if you're courageous the most experimental/Industrial/Electro-Techno-Hardcore-Punk-Hip Hop songs like "Shit Show" or "Disappointed", "Giving Bad People Good Ideas" or "Runway E" (many of them i have to say being fascinating as well as disgusting at the same time (you're warned, it is often overwhelming, extreme...). I also have to say some of these sounds (or combination of sounds) in there I never heard before despite my natural curiosity.

Okay so, pretty sure black metal is NOT a point of reference for dälek, they come at it from both traditional hip hop (with very oldschool beats) but also from musical traditions of industrial, post-industrial, krautrock (they even recorded an album wifh Faust, a legendary German krautrock band that was active in the 70's and reactivated in the 90's), avant garde music etc. while also listing My Bloody Valentine as a big influence (shoegaze). Black metal is not the only genre out there with rough or dissonant sounding production, there's been plenty of experimentation in several genres, some of which I mentioned above.
Someone here has a looot of stuff left to explore :D
Which is good. I've been on this musical voyage myself for something like 27 years so far and I still find new music and unexplored areas. Techno, rave, gabber, nu metal, industrial metal, dark ambient, ambient, drone, dub, illbient, trip hop, power noise, ebm, electro industrial, synthpop, visual kei, jrock, jpop, drum n bass, neurofunk, jungle, crossbreed, noise, microsound, lowercase, glitch, grindcore, deathcore, digital hardcore, gothic doom, deathrock, post punk, new wave, no wave, jazz, yass, psychedelic trance, idm, electro, post rock, progressive metal, sludge metal, bigbeat, nu jazz, chiptunes, experimental music, zeuhl, dungeon synth, and so on...
I've barely scratched the surface myself :D
Anyway. Dälek do have some ties to metal scene though. They do tour a lot with metal bands (they toured extensively with Melvins in the past) and they also worked with Techno Animal which is a project by ex-members of Napalm Death who decided they still like noisy music but don't want to play grindcore and switched towards more electronic beat oriented stuff that can fall under post-industrial, illbient and experimental music I guess).
Sidenote: Napalm Death is very interesting. The fastest band in the world had several lineup changes and none of the members who started recording the first album were present at the end of that album and there's not a single member of the lineup that recorded the second album present in the band anymore either, but this resulted in so much good musical experimentation with projects like Techno Animal, Godflesh, Cathedral, Scorn etc. emerging with various ex-Napalm Death members, all of which either abandoned the "gotta go fast" aspect (Cathedral becoming a super imporrtant band to the formation of Doom Metal, Godflesh opting for a lot more industrial influenced sound) or abandoing the metal aspect entirely (Techno Animal and Scorn)
Anyway, I'm just rambling at this point :D

Dang, thanks so much for this well thought-out and informative comment. And you're right, I have a lot of ground to explore. My musical horizons have been greatly expanded with metal I've been introduced to by this community but there's a LOT of other genres I know nothing about as well. I'll be 80 years old one day and still expanding my understanding of all of music :)

I'm not sure how much black metal they listen to, but they're heavily involved with post-metal bands. I've seen them play shows with both Cult Of Luna and Neurosis, and they were on the now defunct record label Hydra Head Records which was run by the vocalist of Isis. They also have Adam Jones from Tool featured on their new album.

Really liked this one. Nice reading the comments and hearing they interact with post-metal because that’s what I gravitated towards in the instrumentals.
This week was interesting. As someone who listens to primarily metal where the lyrics are hard to understand, but is interested in the lyrical content and how it fits within the album, I find hip hop to have a heavy emphasis on lyrical expression. There is heavy use of
rhymes, rhythm, alliteration, etc. to convey their message. It seems they’re the spotlight while the instrumental provide support and deeper context for the lyrics. To me, a lot of metal seems to use the vocalist as another instrument and uses the instrumentals to convey emotion and story, which is why I can listen to a band with foreign language vocals and still be moved.
What I did really like about this week was the flow of the vocalist. They all seemed to have a way of lulling in the listener, something I enjoy about the genres of post-metal and doom. Thanks for diving into hiphop this week!

Completely agree. I'm always in awe of rappers with great flow. The entire delivery is built on "telling a story" and I can appreciate that.

Hi Bryan, I see what you mean, I understand, but for me it is clearly bordering (if not crossing the line most of time) Trip-Hop (check out Portishead/Massive Attack/Tricky/DJ Shadow/Wax Tailor, etc) , rather than Black Metal, but sure it is dark & more to my liking than many Hip-Hop bands, sounds wise...I'll also add it has an Industrial/Ambient side in it, but the end is clearly Hip-Hop, maybe also a tribute to some early NY experimental bands such as GRAY in which for some time the famous Haitian graffiti artist/painter Jean-Michel Basquiat worked in too...(though it did include more Ambient/Jazz influences, check out for instance "Suicide Hotline" song, but as here you might find it too minimal or repetitive too).

Whoa! I haven't listened to these guys and this LP since college, when I was deep into my noise/avant garde phase. This shit brought back memories! I used to bump these guys constantly, probably much to the constant annoyance of my roommates haha. cLOUDEAD is another experimental hip-hop group you might dig, too, if you're ever seeking out more. Though I haven't listened to them in ages either!

I'm not much of a hip hop fan other than some Eminem, and some more 'metal aligned' hip hop like Hacktivist, Cypress Hill and Bodycount. The heavier sound of this appeals though. Maybe enough to listen to it again.

The most interesting thing here is the production, but music-wise this really didn't do anything for me. Usually hip-hop at least has the contrast between the static music and the varied rhythms and flow of the vocal delivery; but here both elements are extremely static and repetitive. The comparison with BM is rather apt and like with that genre if you aren't enraptured by the sound and the tone it creates I don't think there's much else here that's all that appealing.
33:20: It's worth noting that Jesus himself hung out with "sinners" and scorned the religious leaders of his day.
33:50: Faust is about a very learned scholar who realizes he's wasted his life accumulating knowledge so makes a deal with the devil (Mephistopholes) to regain his youth and pursue a young woman named Margarete. The most famous rendition of the Faust legend is Goethe's, which is often considered the greatest masterpiece of German literature. Goethe wrote two parts to it almost 25 years apart, and Part 2 is pretty wild while Part 1 is a pretty straight-forward story. I read it many years ago. There's one famous musical adaptation in a French opera by Charles Gounod, as well as an excellent silent film by the great FW Murnau.
38:03: Tigris and Euphrates are part of a river system in Western Asia.
