When I have new crew helping me sail by Ben-40, I have them watch this "training video" of how to keep cool in these conditions. Thanks for making this video so that everyone can learn from it.
I enjoyed the video, especially when you got rid of the loud music and just let us hear the sounds of nature. Thanks for sharing. I appreciate it.
A great boat is at her best with a good crew! This is a great video of heavy weather sailing! Great job!
Love the bit when she is trying to catch a shark with her feet. Got a friend in California, Stumpy we call him, who actually managed to catch one but had to let it go.
Ooff! I don’t think we would be doing this back on Australia to many big fish!
Mate! That is hands down, the best UA-cam sailing clip I have ever seen. Pure sailing!
Keep up the good work.
That looked lively, i have been there too, fear and adrenaline, nothing else matters but the next moment, at the front of the train, not many people get there! Thank You and well done.
Love the buzz of a good swell. Nice helming. When things get lumpy ‘follow the mast’... when the boat starts to lurch to port - steer to port. Use the mast as an indicator, especially at night. You probably know this anyway with how you were doing - great job.
I meant to say, when the ‘mast’ lurches to port, steer to port.... and vici versa
Thanks for the nice words. I guess we do this but yeah at night it’s tricky to see the instruments so that’s a good idea to follow the mast at night. Cheers.
Thanks for the info. Just found this. I've no idea about sailing and was wondering what they were steering towards. I'm a flier and you basically do the opposite in a plane to level the wings in the bumps (but you don't fight it too hard - ease your way through). I guess if I was steering that boat I'd end up rolling the thing.
Best yet. You’ve done it justice. I’ve watched it 5 times now and I get goosebumps every time. Trip of a lifetime for sure yewwwww
CAN'T imagine myself There .with my Albin VEGA 27 haha. Is this possible?
You just can’t begin to understand how scary this can be until you’ve done it. We had the same conditions but with a counter current coming in to Isla Mujeres when we lost our steering. Thank God we had an emergency tiller made before we left the US. We didn’t have so far to go fortunately. We literally surfed into Isla. Never been so relieved to put down the anchor! Great video and am looking forward to following your adventures.
Wow that sounds like a scary experience, lucky it went all well. Thank you so much, glad to have you here!
The adage"what does not kill you just makes you stronger " is I think the applicable comment.
You learn a lot about yourself and your boat for going through these kind of experiences.
This was intense and raw. You all handled it well, kept calm and prevailed. I experienced that sail with you and that is the first time ever when watching a small yacht sailing video. You earned those survival shots at the end!
Well done, and you managed to capture the drama well.
Thanks 🙏. Quite noisy and bumpy footage but so was the sailing I guess.
Just found you guys this morning, what an exciting trip lol, great footage and showing how it really is. Thanks for not sugar coating the shit, please keep up the reality of sailing the seas.
That's some really kind words there mate, thanks a lot! We will do our best to do just that
hi guys , great footage of your crossing. we were on the ocean at the same time on our way to st lucia. we experience the same wave height's in a 40ft Van de Stadt,
The guy in the baseball cap needs to be deposited in Bridgetown with the rest of the garbage. Your helmsman needs to learn to feel the boat, stop looking at the waves. Anticipate, typical Brit congratulate each other on achievements in failure and seamanship.
Sounds like your a solo sailor there Richard, if that’s how you treat your crew. In our opinion the crew did an excellent job at helming in those conditions. If your attempting to comment on seamanship try something with a little more substance then ‘feel the boat’, then maybe we can actually learn something from you. Btw Aussies mate, not Brits!
Wow, gripping to watch and so glad I wasn't there I felt sea sick watching it and felt elated when you arrived, keep safe.
Thank so much for this comment and glad we can put you in the moment with us like that. Cheers and fair winds. 🙏
Judging by the fact that waves usually look much lower on video these are really impressive. Well done!
WOW!! Well done!! crazy sea state!! add 4 fantastic sailors!! Well done!!
Nicely done guys, thanks for sharing this. For those of us who haven't been to sea in ages this is really special. Really great piece of filming too.
Awesome. You promised a bumpy ride and you weren’t wrong😀 as lots have already said- great video capturing the conditions perfectly and the team work that made the dream work. Well done all.
Thanks mate very kind words. Glad we could deliver on the expectations even if the footage is a little shakey and noisy. We are all amateurs but the team did a great job. 🤙
That was amazing. Really feeling the emotion onboard; that’s good filmmaking 👍🏻
Oh man! That's what I like to see a rough sea, and calm crew. Cheers from Brazil.
That was one of the best sailing edits I've seen. Wow! That was intense! I've been following plenty of sailing channels, and I have to admit, your channel is by far my favorite. I very much like the raw sailing mixed in. Especially in these types of situations. Well done! Great editing!
Very real. You captured the intensity, the focus demanded in near-gale conditions, and the incredible joy and relief that comes from making port after a long passage. Excellent work!
Hi Guys n’ Girl. I Saw this video trough, an felt very intens about it. I took in companionship with my nephew , his wife and their 2 daughters, the same tour Cap Verde/Mindelo to Babados November 2019, and we had about the same experience the last 4 days out og 19 days. Very heavy wind swirls with heavy rain,- in wich the boad 38food Benetton first, kind of surfed. After about an hour the rain stopped and the wind got a bit down, and very big waves 5-6 m cought up with us. Some crashed down in cockpit, and one smashed so hard at the rear end of the boad, that we got a crack, and began to take water in. We also lost power for some hours before finding the problem. We glued and repaired in morning light, and sawed courage for next swirl. The swirls had a kind of cycle thing,- and went back 2-3 times every Night. Our wind at highest before loosing power mesured 38spm. But in Night swirls was the Wind much higher. We kept calm and all went well. After arrival at George Town /. Babardos yacht club we slept 18 hours, and got drunk for the next 24. Kind of taking pressure I gues . Regards Jens-Otto. Sailing Embla. DK
Wow this sounds like a very intense crossing And a very wild arrival into Barbados. Power failure and taking on water, the worst. Thanks for getting in touch we will look you up on fb.
You guys did a great job of capturing just how rough those seas were! Fantastic job of steerage and the camaraderie between you was evident and an obvious factor. Good episode!
Thanks a lot for this lovely comment. It was a great experience and even better to share with some good mates. 🤙
We sailed my 40ft Beneteau in very similar seas but with less experienced crew, luckily its was only from Portugal to Lanzarote so only 6 days. It all came back watching your vid - well done guys for keeping it real - loving the comments from the armchair sailors!
Thanks so much for your kind words Adrian glad you enjoyed 🙏. That passage down from Portugal can be a very wild one also especially around the corner of Morocco. Haha always some good ones right.. 🤟
Not sure how these kids have that much experience. Those conditions require decades of seasoning. Not going to be much of an aft seat sailor but the sail handling there was pitiful.
I don’t think we are old enough to have decades of experience yet and this is the first and only boat we have sailed on. In saying that, we still believe we did a reasonable job considering the conditions but of course learnt a few different tactics to slightly season us for the next round. Which sail handling are you referring to and what was incorrect about about it? Pitiful seems abit harsh.
@@SailingBeaver What would you guys have done differently with the knowledge you now have? I'm beginning my circumnavigation in about a year and would love to know what you have learned.
@@SailingBeaver Looked like you did very well. Hand steering in those conditions takes a lot of concentration. Did you consider heaving to or going under bares poles? Your biggest risk was broaching which could result in a knock down with potentially serious damage to boat and crew. I was in similar conditions to that in Pacific and we kept sailing on like you did, but it might not always be the best strategy. We were in more of "Bluewater" boat with a slightly better capsize ratio, not that I think it makes a huge difference.
Brilliant footage, best I have seen on UA-cam so far. Best wishes and fair winds for you future travels, I'll be strapped in for the ride..
Wow thank you so much for your kind words, means a lot to get feedback like that! Truly appreciate it and glad to have you onboard🙏
4:14 is wonderful sailing!! Good breeze, down wind, minimal white caps, that is some good stuff. That's in my 26 foot Pierson! Happy to be here. However, a couple minutes later in the 9:00's that's a bit more robust, but still!
Yes sir, it’s all about perspective I guess. Robust is of course one way to put it but we are glad to have not been there in a 26 foot.
Epic. Everyone working like a fine machine. I watched a lot of sailing on youtube past 5 years and i think thats the best captured sea state video
Thankyou sir, we appreciate that. Sea states rather tough to capture but this day was rather bumpy.
i don t know if it is your lense, the colour grading, your accent, the cutting, or just you as a human but i must say i love your videos and the vibes you are able to catch and put into a video. i crossed the atlantic ocean this year as well and i know exactly how you feel (-; thank you very much for sharing.
Wow this is an amazing comment! Thanks so much for your feedback and such kind words. All the best on your trip, fair winds. 🙏
That's an experience I'd like to have. Very envious. Thats one that you wont forget. 🥂
Congratulations guys on your successful crossing. Sam I think you are an epic skipper, very cool under pressure. Great helming between you an Kerry. Well done. Stay safe.
Everyone onboard did a great job this day mate it was a wild day for our little boat. Thanks 🤙
Way to go! We crossed last year on SV Otoka in very similar conditions. Your video captures the waves much better than our footage. We to had a rocky ride into the north of Barbados at night. Thank you for sharing you made laugh and cry out load at the memories.
Thanks for this, lovely comment. Glad you also arrived safe into Barbados. 😀
Great video. I was feeling the motion of the sea just sitting here in my chair. Thank you for the adventure 😊❤️
Great effort avoiding the broach!! So glad that you made it to port safely, cheers!
Great Video ! I never get tired of watching live passages ! The bigger the seas the better the video ! Cheers
I watch this a lot. It's the boat I want doing the sailing I want to do. Well done!
On the edge and back again.
enjoyed the minimalist presentation (no unnecessary dramatic music through the bulk of the sailing). cheers -
Held it together well guys, glad you made it safely.
Let the party commence xx
Well done guys, Excellent Video. I know from my own experiences how it is very difficult to capture wave size from on board and the pictures never quite do justice to the reality. Enjoy the stopover and a few cold ones!
Thankyou sir! Yeah your right, somehow the camera always flattens the seas. We almost drowned the camera and got saltwater all over the lenses but atleast we got a few good shots.
I got sea sick while im watching this from bed .. great video, you deserve sub. waiting for more videos :) have a good sail .
great team work proud of you I actually teared up when you were raising the shots to each other.
That means a lot to us Bruce, thanks for ya comment. Definitely a few memories in those moment for us. 🍻
Lovely to see a boat well managed - nice work.
Wow! Great job! I thought the Beneteau did a fantastic job. Think will be my next purchase. Comfort 95% of the time for me!
Cheers mate. That’s good to hear, I believe the Beneteau has performed very well for us!
The first of your videos I've seen, it won't be the last. I am a new skipper and try to learn from UA-cam. This was a lesson in skill and nerves. Well done to all of you. What a trip! 😀🙂
Wow, that was a roller coaster ride. I bet you will remember that crossing for a lifetime. Enjoying your channel, looking forward to seeing more of your adventures. Good luck and enjoy.
Yeah we definitely will, was a pretty crazy and memorable experience for sure! Thank you so much for watching! Glad to have you onboard
Wow! that was extreme surfing. I envy the warm fuzzy while handling the situation and the adrenaline high when on safe anchorage.
Just recently found you guys and I’m loving the channel! Keep up the strong work and safe travels and fair winds!
I wonder when looking back on those waves if the "we should have gotten a center cockpit" pops to mind. Just found you so clicked the like and bookmarked. Gives one an appreciation for the old timers wooden ships and lack of instruments. Fair winds.
Three crew and a skipper in a 40 ft centre cockpit - they'd be sat rubbing shoulders and knees? Not very often you take one over the back and that's what wash boards are for. For me a centre cockpit doesn't begin to work till you get past 45ft. depends on how important a centreline double bed is versus room in the cockpit and what type of sailing you do i suppose.
@friarfox yes on this day a certain type of center cockpit would be nice it also made us appreciate heavier displacement boats more but we are still very happy with this setup. @Adrian your right about the large aft cabin it wouldn’t serve much of a purpose for us. 🙏
I enjoyed watch to the end thanks for sharing
Absolutely inspirational. Big waves and you kept your heads. Can't wait to follow when I get the chance.
You are some great guys :) Thanks a lot for posting. Really enjoyed your shooting and not changing scenes every two seconds, but gives the opportunity to be there on the boat. All the best for new journeys !
very nice video... big waves ... just the sound of nature as it should be !
Awesome! After a life in dingy dark recording studios as an engineer, it was suggested I take up sailing now I am retiring. I watched this and have decided I am never going to get in a sailing boat...... ever ! ( Maybe a pedalo ) Unbelievable - I admire your courage and skill - what a memory to hold. Thanks for making the gripping video - worthy of being on TV. Fair winds and fun to you all......
Thank you sir, glad you enjoyed. It was a bumpy day but hope you still get out there for a sail, not often like this. Thanks again fair winds🤙
Just stumbled upon your channel. Love the sailing footage!! Thanks for the much needed fix since my sailing season doesn't start until May... 😁⛵
Very enjoyable video. Great to see you put safety first and put life jackets on in the conditions.
Thanks for sharing! Pretty hectic there. And it's hard work to keep the boat upright. In the outskirt of the fjords in west Norway towards the North See I have encounter 35-45 Knot wind with 6 meter steep current waves against the tide in a 35 feet old wooden slow motorboat. It was a pretty "exiting" experience.
No worries at all. Your right it was quite hectic but no comparison to heavy winds on the west coast of Norway that’s for sure! Always worse with the heavy cold air. Thanks for watching 🙏
Hey guys, nice sail....I dump the main (early) and carry more headsail, ideally twin headsails. It settles the roll, and naturally balances out any tendency to round up.....you would be more comfortable and lose no speed if you just dumped the main.
Thanks and glad you enjoy. We sometimes use the twin headsails and your right it does completely stop the rounds ups.
Yes I agree with that comment. Like a wind surfer to lean the sail forward makes you turn downwind. Carry any sail on the mail will bring the weight back and it will be easier to unintentionally round up. But nice one guys and girls. Certainly a trip you won’t forget 🙂
Trysail and headsail(s) also works in that setting...safer with easy sheeting, no boom motion, simple jibe, less roundup, still plenty of speed
Its hard to capture wave height on camera. You nailed it. Well done!
Great video - agree with other comment about leaving it to the elements to convey the challenge. Really liked seeing a well-found (standard French) boat, everything seemed secured, jackets, tethers, and great helming skills, changing helm frequently, concentration, some looked behind - some ahead, someone on the kicker in case of broach. Times like these you need a full crew and you were always asking after each other. Enjoy Barbados.....
Thanks for this Kevin, really appreciate this comment and you kind words. We tried to just do 30 mins each to share the work around and give everyone a break and the wave spotted seemed to be a important job. Thanks again. 🙏
@@SailingBeaver Sorry, one more topic - looks like you are cutter-rigged, perhaps using the inner fore-stay generally used for a storm jib. Is that correct, and did you have to change anything to the rigging eg strengthen? Btw, assuming you are still in Barbados, try Bombas Bar (does great food) 300 yards N of Mullins Beach along Highway One (use the yellow reggae buses)....
No worries, yes you are correct we have fitted an inner forestay with furler and a small heavy weather jib. We did install some dyneema running backs to provide some aft strengthening. Thanks for the tips by the way.
Going to say that was an excellent video, found you by accident, good stuff
Awesome effort guys, great video. Backs to the wall stuff and loved the focus and teamwork, everyone kept their shit together. Well done 👍
Excellent job! It would be easy to say don't put yourself in that position, but sometimes it happens and you handled it well. I am impressed with the camera work, it is so hard to catch actual sea state on camera so I can only imagine it was much worse than shown. I would have wanted a different boat than that for those conditions, but she appears to have weathered it just fine.
Thanks for this comment, really kind words and we appreciate it. Yeah we feel the same about the boat in them conditions, something big and heavy would be more comfortable for sure.
Well done guys, that couldn’t have been easy, nice work!
wow guys. just tuned into your channel. Flip a biscuit that was one hell of a ride. Glad your all ok and something im sure you will never forget. cheers from the Brit In california. x
Thankyou kind sir 🙏, Glad you enjoyed the vid. Your right I don’t think we will forgot that wild ride. All the best.
what an epic episode, just gold. Great work on getting the footage for us in those conditions.
Just binged your channel. Awesome stuff.
@@SailingBeaver brought back memories of my sailing days. I appreciated what was going on in this episode full well. Had me on the edge of my seat when I saw the boat heaving like that. Phew!
Thanks for this comment and glad you could relate. We hope the video helps us to remember the experience well is it was quite a wild one.
Awesome guys!!! Great video of a very hairy finish line, well done, great team effort!
Thank you so much Lucia, glad you enjoyed it! Hope you guys are doing well xx
This was super amazing to watch you guys be in the moment, watch-over each other, and make your dream become reality!!!! Cheers😊⛵️👏🏾👏🏾⛵️😊
Your vigilance is awesome to watch🌊
Great show . Just good ocean crossing stuff. No bullshit. I sail a 38 Catalina SS . I haven't crossed an Ocean but you make me want to. Keep it up.
Thankyou sir! Much appreciated, we hope to see you out the water some time 🤙
The Quartermaster•
This is the difference between your sailing videos and others who don’t want you to see how they show poor judgement and helm skills when the weather continues to deteriorate and things start falling apart. You guys are truly competent sailors! It’s the price you pay knowing that this is the reality when blue water sailing. Great Job!
Yol, this is mad. Great watch, subbed
Wow. This is living!
very good video. one of the rare ones that capture the mood and the tension of handling the boat, in high seas and high wind. felt the boat was running too fast and too much sails though, perhaps there was some pressure not to arrive too late. prefer to slow the boat down in high seas and not force her into surfing, slowing helps also to mitigate her breaking out to the side (and then knock down)
Felt that ,thanks !
loved it, Loved It, LOVED IT!
A sailing video with, wait for it...SAILING! Looked to be pretty intense sailing at that. No blood, no foul. Stay safe, fair winds.
Thanks so much mate, gotta do the genre som justice and actually sail right! 🤙
What a ride guys! Superb job and excellent captions in this scenario! So intense! Congratulations team!!
Very uncomfortable and tiring, but there's always a great sense of accomplishment following. Well done.
Wow, that was intense! I liked how you let the wind and the sea state do most of the talking in this episode. I think it captured the mood onboard
Thanks mate! Yeah sometimes its so much better to just hear the raw sound of the ocean, even with our cheap microphone
End of the seat stuff guys.. well done team...👊
Thanks so much 🙏
EXACTLY. Well put.
Wow! I really liked this crew, everyone on the boat is listening to the ocean. Thanks!!!
