Reuseable Mold Making Compound you can make at home! AND How To Use IT!!

- For all the holiday Hobbyists out there. This will save you a BUNCH OF MONEY on mold making compounds. This works with CLEAR RESIN and it's made from stuff you can get at the grocery store. Here are the ingredients!!
4 ounces unflavored plain Gelatin mix.
12 ounces of glycerine
2 cups of HOT water..
That's it. And you can use it over and over again!
Hi Bruce, I thought you might be interested in a bit of a time saver.
Instead of using hot water for the first cup on the gelatin. Use cold 🥶 water ( out of the tap ) sprinkle the gelatin on top, then leave for about 6 minutes. During this time, it will swell up. Now you can pour your second cup of hot to boiling water on top.
As you stir the mixture with your wisk, the gelatin grains will dissolve, leaving no lumps .
I hope you find this helpful.
Enjoyed your video 😊. Thanks for sharing.
I had heard complaints about mold before i made my gel plate for art prints using this basic recipe. Some recipes called for alcohol, which will evaporate out. I live in hot & humid Texas, so I put a generous amount of alcohol in. My gel plates are three years old and have no mold.
@@G.G.8GG the mold in the stuff I described comes from the water. Once it evaporated you are left with just glycerine and gel. Like I said in the video, if it's left uncovered the moisture can escape and no mold can grow. But like I always say, I'm no expert. I'm just trying to show the Holiday Hobbyist how to save money.
@@jennercustomtoys sounds right to me. Thanks.
Omg, i saw the gel plate videos months ago, but was like, yeah, never gonna buy those and stopped watching.. didn't think i could make my own...
So G.G. are you saying instead of water for the gelatin they did alcohol instead?
Maybe i will have to try to find those videos.
I came home from work today and was soon headed out to the shop to check on my first mold casts I poured last night. I'm probably $400 into this resin casting and I easily poured $50 worth of silicone last night. So Today as I am demolding my first casts...your "Reusable Mold Making Compound " started to play on my laptop.
As I listened I was thinking , I have glycerin from the porcilin clay recipe and I have Gelitin from a project last spring.... Oh I'm gonna try this! Thank you for sharing!I got this!
@@joeschmidt21490 good luck!
I love the idea of a reusable mold. Cuz sometimes you just want to make a few and don't need a mold to keep! First time watching your channel! Love it! Subscribed!
Welcome, feel free to ask anything.
dude! this ia amazing. I've been learning mold making and it's pretty painful learning when the mold material is $10-15 per pour. This is so cool man!
Heating resin reduces the working time and speeds up the cure so you may not have the full working time available if you heat it. Also, instead of a cup of hot water, try preheating both parts of the resin before mixing. This has several benefits such as reducing the viscosity so air bubbles dissipate quickly and resin flows easily into detailed molds as well as reducing the curing time. The disadvantages of this would be a shorter working time and with added heat, faster cures make it more susceptible to flash curing and clarity issues. My personal preference is to use a real vacuum chamber (one that can reach at least 28” Hg) to degass the resin, pour into mold and remove any pouring induced bubbles and then put it on a heat pad at 50 C if I want a faster cure, usually to pour a top/base coat. The mold material is interesting. I’ll give it a try when I run out of 2 part silicone and impression putty.
FYI. Glycerin is a humectant, meaning, it attracts moisture. If your worried about potential mold, add lemon juice or you can buy food grade mold inhibitor
Yes! I use *E211* - a pickled food preservative. 😄
Are you going to eat it?
Use cold water first so you don't get lumps in the gelatin. Then the hot water to melt it.
The best instructions I've found for preparing gelatin is to use the proportion of " 2 teaspoons of powder sprinkled into 2 tablespoons(30 milliliters ) cold water . Whisk with a fork and stand for 1 minute. Melt in the microwave for 20 second increments until dissolved."
It seems to help to prevent the formation of solid lumps.
you can also find the injectors at a farm supply store. Here in S.C we have Tractor supply. they run about a buck each. drawing alcohol up into the injector a few times cleans the tip out quite well also.
....and the bulbs came out shiny, great stuff. I watched from start to end. was worth it, Thank you.
Very informative and you can really tell that you care about the viewer whole heartedly ☺️
You can use a translucent epoxy resin tint so the bulbs are clear. Great video!
Thank you for your knowledge. I’m extremely new to casting and resin and I appreciate any advice to help save money.✌️❤️🤘
Mine is in the refrigerator now. So excited
@@nancyharris8551 I'd love to see your results!
Hey Bruce 👋🏻,, after pouring your epoxy, you can take a silicone spatchula and scrape off any excess over pour off the top, eliminating the need to use a drumal . Thank you for the video…very informative 😊
You are not wrong, but I like to leave a little excess there in case a few bubbles need to escape after my pour.
1st time seeing one of your video's, glad i clicked in.
Super Cool! Thanks for the idea and tips! 😊
Really great video man! I'm looking to make some custom windshields for models and I think this is the route I'm going. Thanks a bunch!
I have used this stuff to make canopys for vintage star wars toys. It does work pretty well.
I haven't finished watching yet, but I'm so thrilled to have come across your video and learn about this technique.
The cheapest way i knew to make a mold was with clear silicone caulk (to seal windows and sinks), but I've always hesitated to ever do it because i only ever want to work in very small amounts and from my experience, once you cut the end off of the rest in the tube it doesn't store well and dries up within the week and here it's like $7 a tube. But with that, you can use fabric layers to strengthen and you can water down the silicone with mineral spirits (i think that's the one)... but yeah, i just can see when I'm gonna do it.
This is so much more up my alley. Re-usable, melts, plenty of work time, isnt as sticky, stinky, or messy. I'm thinking that i could probably sculpt with monster clay and because it's so waxy this would mold my form and easily release.... i did hear you list off a bunch of things that didn't work.. it would be cool to cast plaster, but i can definitely see it sticking because it's like chalk powder and glycerine is basically a sticky sugar (as far as i recall).
Also, very good to learn that you can find large jars of glycerine at a drug store (i think you said, will go back through). I needed food grade glycerine once for lollypops or something and it was expensive for a tiny bottle ¹/⁴ the size.. still sitting around with no use (i only used a teaspoon).
I use alcohol 99% to clean my syringe. Thanks for the video. ❤
I'll try that. I've been wondering what would work.. Thanks.
Brilliant and new (to me) idea! SO much cheaper than silicone! Thank you! 😊👍
This is brilliant and I love your style thank you
Thank you too!
Very thorough. Thank you for putting it all in one video. Have a great day
1st time watch & now a subscriber✌
There are plenty of shops online that sell syringes in bulk. They work out a couple of pennies each if you get fed up with cleaning them.
Excellent idea. I'm glad I watched all the way through.
Brilliant ideas , thanks so much for resharing this. I wouldn’t known about the other video. You can get the injector from the pharmacist. They are used for baby and pet medicine. They used to give you them for free. Great video!
I'm a holiday hobbyist & I cant wait to start this years projects. I've never done resin casting but i'd love to try it. Great video.
@@opuscrap4322 it's a lot of fun!
Love the video , great content,i have tried this method long ago, but it work quite well maybe due to molding directly after mixing or bad ratio but definitely will trys your after converting ounces to grams, Egypt+metric 😁 a very small hit you may like to try add just a drop of blue food color, and vola you have a clear mould compound as blue cancel the yellowish color , first time viewer not the last , subscribed and waiting for new lovely content
Thank you so much!! I am going to try this method.
You are so welcome!
You can avoid lumps in the gelatin if you put the water into the bowl first and gradually adding the gelatin powder while stirring!
A fantastic video. Thank you. Going to try it ASAP. G'day from Australia.
Thanks love it
If you want zero lumps in the gelatin, you need to pour the gelatin in a thin stream into the hot water while you wisk.
Wow, I loved your video. I have learnt so much while enjoying it Thank you ❤
I'm here to help.
Excellent idea and tips, thanks.
First time seeing your video, Nice job! Many ideas flowing! The epoxy you are using, does it harden to point of brittle, or stay pliable? Noticed fresh out of mold, it seems soft and bending. Love the Christmas tree, brings back memories, and great to keep it fresh and refurbished.
Thank you, this is awesome!
you should try using 70% isopropyl Alcohol to clean up your syringe and shot cups. Works and clean ups well
If you desolve the gelatine first in normal water and then add it to the hot water. It will not have any lumps.
You can deduct the water from the from the hot water.
I've done that too. It still doesn't end up perfect.
You can also make Gel Plates from these ingredients, if anyone's interested. The branded Gelli Plates are so expensive!
Great video, thanks. And Greetings from the Netherlands.
Thank you so much for this reusable molding compound. I’m from Canada and our Walmart doesn’t sell clear cast resin where else can it be found?
eBay or Amazon I guess..
13:55 - I had mine get moldy and I was wondering the same damn thing :/
So when storing it, you want it to be able to breathe or it will get moldy.
Thank you for addressing that :)
Can you use this for making mold of bigger things? And wouldn't the heat from resin while curing melt the mold slightly?
@@tessmudge7189 yes. I've made bigger things. Clear rain only. The others get too hot
Same basic ingredients for making a gel plate for art which works great.
Question for those who don't have a microwave. How would we heat the resin up ? As I dont have a microwave ? Lol. Thank you for all your shows that always have great information.❤
@@naturalist-j8x a double boiler style setup would work on the stove at a low heat.
@jennercustomtoys thank you so much, I have a glass one without the lid, so I will mark that one for my crafts.
keep a small, lidded jar of 99% alcohol and after wiping off injector, suck up the alcohol and inject back into jar. cap jar and reuse until it becomes gunky. works great
Smooth-on used to sell a rubber that could be reused... heated and it melted so you can reuse it... don't recall the name
I bought some of that a long time ago. it was a VERY small portion at an really high price. If I recall correctly i only got about 3 uses out of it before it started sticking to all my castings.
99-100% Isopropyl Alcohol will remove bubbles if misted over to resin lightly, AND you can suck the Isopropyl Alcohol up into your syringe to clean it!! Hope that helps!
if clear cast is a 2 part mixing resin, why can't you use say Let's Resin brand or Teexpert regular 2 part resin? Just curious.
It gets too hot and has a bad reaction to that. Then the casting comes out like garbage.
@@jennercustomtoys I wondered if that was the reason. I've never used clear cast so wasn't sure of it's properties. TY!
You should totally reach out to the crafsman

My first comment didnt take. :( anywayyy, GREAT video!! Loved everything about it! And your AI friend is beautiful too! Whats her name? 😂
My only gripe is the mold gets...moldy. Im not a fan of just leaving it out in the open. Id rather throw it in a ziplock maybe with some dessicant. Citric acid comes to mind, but also if you google "mold inhibitor for gummies", an interesting and cheap product comes up as well. Would be interesting for future videos!
Keep up the great work! Loved the long form video!
@@PaulHanak I pointed out in the video how to keep it from getting moldy. Don't put it in a sealed container.
@@jennercustomtoys right. Apologies, I wasn't clear. I'm not a fan of leaving something hydroscopic out just willynilly. Personal preference! I think storing it in a mason jar so it's "ready to pour" after heating and stirring would be cool as well. To each their own though! Keep up the great content. We appreciate you!
@@PaulHanak, maybe put a paper towel over the top of it,?? So dust/bugs don’t get down inside ?? But it would still get airflow so it doesn’t mold..??
These bulbs don’t really stretch the limit of the mold I’m assuming. How much elasticity is there if casting something more complex? I’m sorry if my terminology isn’t correct. Let’s say I have a regular light bulb shape have you used this mold material for a 2 part mold? UPDATE: I found the video in your library “my bad”!!! Love your video. Perfect amount of information at the right speed and laid back humor🤪
I'm glad I could help. It does take some experimentation to get the best results. Good luck.
That recipe is also what homemade gelli plates are made from..
Can use it for candle making ???
Did you watch the whole video?
@ yes I did. Great work by the way. Thank you.
@@WasansartIn the video, @ 3:02, mentioned that the gelatin can't be used with wax or plaster of paris. In another comment he verified that those products get too hot and will melt the gelatin...
@@seangeary7100thank you. I don’t know how I’ve missed it
3:03 - QUESTION: is the reason why you can't use it with wax or plaster of paris because the heat from those products will melt the gelatin? I would assume that is the case but I wanted to know if it was that or some other reason.
Thank you for your time :)
@@seangeary7100 yes, it melts and gets deformed

possibly, but way cheaper. And I think it lasts longer.
Is this firm enough to use paper clay?
Did you watch the video?
Yes I did. I know you said that it wouldn't work with anything else but I didn't understand why. I don't believe that was explained.@@jennercustomtoys
Do you mean plaster of paris?
Plaster of paris will heat up when it cures and will melt the gelatin. He mentioned this at 3:02.
Huh.... You do realize that if you grab one of your little shot glasses and put a bit of 90% or higher isopropyl alcohol in it and just suck it up and push it out of the injector a few times it will end up clean? You don't need much of the alcohol and you can just let it evaporate or put it in a small, airtight container to keep using for that purpose until it doesn't work anymore. Doing this will eventually dry out the silicone on the plunger but you should still be able to get 5 to 8 uses out of it depending on the quality of the silicone. No need to scrape and you shouldn't have any clogs. 😆👍🏼
Also, I think using a mini blender (or even a mini electric wisk) would help with the first step of making the mould. Alll the gelatin and 1 cup of water blended should break up all lumps. Pour it out into the bowl and pulse the second cup of water alone in the blender to pick up any residue and then dump it into the gelatin and stir. Afterwards you should have perfectly mixed gelatin with no lumps that should easily mix with the glycerin by hand. The gelatin is made for food so it's perfectly fine to put in a blender and running the plain hot water afterwards in the blender should make cleanup easier and use up all the gelatin. Simple and more efficient to do it that way since there should be no product waste. You can probably even get a cheap blender at a secondhand store or even Walmart just for this purpose if you want to make a ton of this stuff and if you do you can just mix the glycerin in there too. In that case I'd still recommend leaving at least half a cup of the water out to blend in alone and help with getting everything out of the blender. There should be minimal hand mixing and cleanup that way. 🤷🏻♀️
We'll I know that now. Lol . I said I don't know everything, now I've learned something new. Thank you!
@@jennercustomtoys You're welcome! Glad I could give you a good tip. 😄 It's easy to forget about using alcohol to clean up after resin sometimes. 🤷🏻♀️
Actually, if I were you I'd get some cheap baby wipes too. They make initial cleanup a bit easier than paper towels do. Wipe up resin with the baby wipes first, then use isopropyl alcohol with the paper towels. I'd put the alcohol in a fine mist spray bottle for general cleanup and for popping bubbles at the top of resin. You can use the baby wipes on the syringe first too, to get the worst of the resin off, then use the method I mentioned with the alcohol to clean it out. Rinsing the alcohol off with water after cleaning might keep the silicone from drying out too quickly too since it would remove the alcohol. Just set it out to dry with the plunger out afterwards and you'll be set to use it again as soon as it's dry. If you're just cleaning it out in between different colors of resin though, don't bother with the water, just wipe off the excess alcohol with a paper towel.
How goes your Christmas light bulb collection? Have enough yet? Or are you looking to sell them online for people who might be looking for them? 🤔
@@ChibiChula yes they are ready to go. Haven't put them in my store yet
Does anyone know if I tried to make a mold, and 1 batch was not enough to fill up the mold, can I add more if I make another batch?
@@nancyharris8551 absolutely.
Great video! I make toys for my pedals at times and also fun collectibles so this information will definitely help. I’m surprised you said the Amazing Clear doesn’t produce heat, my molds are very warm coming out of the pressure pot, plus molding a figure into something like a clear “gem” the figure melts inside as it cures.
I’ve done the hot water trick but on each A and B, I like the idea of doing it after combining.
I watched the video in its entirety and i still have 2 questions, did you use a mold release when making the master? and shouldnt you wear a mask when using resin?
I don't use mold release with this compound, it eventually taints the molding compound. However, sticking has never been a problem. As far as using a mask goes you probably should. I have a very good ventilation system in my shop so it is not a concern of mine in my case. Thank you for the constructive comment. I appreciate that.
I suppose Uv resin wont work because of lamp
I haven't tried that one yet... give it a shot and let us know.
Its not disgusting if you make it into jello. Just add some sweetner and flavorings. lol. I drink a tablespoon of this every day for health reasons. Builds strong bones and nails. Oh you are just making a plasticizer.
Wouldn't it just be easier to buy actual Jell-O? Lol
@@jennercustomtoys No! why? because it comes with sugar! and the other non sugar jello uses the worst sweeteners. These packages mean you can make as much or as little as you like. I buy it in a bag, i think its cheaper that way too. Look up beef gelatin powder, and price it out. I flavor using kool aid, it only takes a tiny amount and i use stevia to sweeten. It would be nice if companies wised up and made it, but they dont. Its odd, they do that with anything that has salt in it too. Very few replacements without it. i digress.
