NERVOUS! Lifting our 20 TON Boat Home Out of the Water! Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 404

  • This hasn't gotten any less SCARY for us 🙈 Even though it's our 9th time pulling Delos out of the water, it's still such a nerve racking experience...there are just so many things that can go really really wrong. You’re basically asked to steer your boat into a narrow, concrete like bunker with a gigantic machine looming over head. There’s usually some old tires and rusty bits of metal waiting to impale your vessel should anything go wrong. So you approach slowly and if you have timed the tides correctly you glide over the slings, and stop just before ramming your bow into the wall, or your forestay into the machine’s cross brace (both of which are considered bad form 😂 ) As the machine tightens the slings and starts to take the weight, it’s a surreal experience to feel yourself and your boat lifted out of the water supported by only a few straps and pins.
Hauling Delos out of the water marks the end of our 11th season of sailing. It feels like SO LONG ago that we cast the lines in Shelter Bay and began the 3,000+ mile journey from the Panama Canal up to the northern end of the Sea of Cortez. Our time being back in the Pacific ocean has pretty much mirrored what we've found to be true about cruising in general- alternating between the highest highs and the lowest lows, sometimes even simultaneously. While we'd had some pretty big challenges during this time (Hurricanes, Salmonella poisoning, and basically the entire coast of Costa Rica spring to mind) overall it's been a pretty special and unforgettable season for us, and just seeing how much Sierra has grown and developed during this time is pretty mind blowing! But it feels great to close another chapter and make way for an exciting new one as we prepare to cross the Pacific Ocean again!

    Dear Brian and Kazza...and nugget...
Just have to let you know that my husband died suddenly three years ago...a devastating event in our life.
Bingewatching delos from beginning to end is what got me through my intense grieving.....you gave me hope, joy, light in the darkness and transported me to other lands. I watched you with tears of joy in my eyes..joy at the beauty of this planet and this life and the amazing warm human beings that you all are.
Thank you for getting me through....I'm still here...

@@reneequalls5878 Every boat seems to be slowly sinking all the time (figuratively meaning). An active cruising yacht is basically a loose cluster of systems either failing or soon ready to fail (from Sailing Project Atticus) All fixes (even replacements) are only buying time for some more sailing. One must feel comfortable to work with all those systems and to some degree must enjoy that otherwise will have a miserable time on the water.

I've commented this numerous times through the years but, I love watching Brian troubleshoot issues. Not even the vast skill set but the lack of options, no supply house, no buddy next door to help. You never get to just fire the parts cannon at an issue. I'm a instrument/electrical (sometimes mechanical) technician on a pipeline and am sometimes in the middle of no where working an issue but I have an 11,000 pound truck full of tools and components. Awesome work Brian!

Never watched one minute of YT till I was on the mend from a second back surgery in 2019. Your channel was one of the first sailing channels I came across and subscribed to. Back then I would go down the YT rabbit hole daily. Now it's only on those days when I'm reminded you're not thirty anymore. And that's been quite awhile. My mind tells me you need to get this done today but my body hollers and tells me "ain't gonna happen today or tomorrow sport". It's been fascinating watching your adventures from the wilder carefree days before a new family member came along. Man that little darling is growing up fast as they all do. Hard to believe my boy or I should say young man is 33 now. Being a single dad and raising a Downs son has been it's own adventure. There's no way I could live that life style. Mainly because I would have to have two spares of everything. In this video your description of the fix is so very true. The closet I have to Delos is my old truck that's basically a traveling toolbox. And it's just about got a spare for every piece of equipment I own. Thank y'all so much for the hard work behind these great video's for us field bound land sailors too enjoy! Safe travels to your blessed family

I enjoy watching the beautiful scenery but also watching the frustrating mechanical problems (knowing that I don't have to deal with them)

Greetings from Texas, Brian, once again you're the Man. Great job!! I'm really looking forward to the Pacific crossing. I wish you and Kazza plus rapidly growing baby nugget all the very best. Enjoy your land time.

As Canadian that pulls their boat every year and sometimes just to clean the bottom mid season it is amusing but understandable to see the worry pulling a boat . Same goes for the mast , I take it down every year and inspect .

You guys are right around the corner from Bahia de los Angeles.
There is some great yellow tail tuna fishing at the southern end of Isla San Lorenzo, the tides have cut a canyon roughly 4200ft deep.
There is a rather large fish camp called 'Fish Camp, Geco.
Being way up north, you are in what I have always know as 'the worlds greatest fishing hole'
From 1965 to 69, my dad would take the family down to a little town called Puerteceto on vaction.
Dad's research team would go to San Felipe, and charter a boat to fish for Totoaba.
"The totoaba (Totoaba macdonaldi) is a large species of fish native to the Gulf of California in Mexico. Like the vaquita, it is listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as “critically endangered”. The totoaba is being sought after for its swim bladder, which is considered a delicacy in China."
Dad an team would come back with 300 lb Totoaba.
The filet's off those things is just plane awesome.
    I miss Baja.

Hello Brian, Kazza and Nugget. As ever, another brilliant episode of your great journey around the World. Thank's to Google Earth, I've been able to see many of your destinations throughout the years and today is no exception, as I've just found your land-based Holiday home; Las Palomas Resort. The view from the balcony of your apartment, very clearly shows the V-shaped pool and all the walkways to it and the other pool and the covered areas. It's very clearly shown on Google Earth. I trust you are all making the most of the pools and the restaurants and that Kazza is taking the opportunity to indulging in a daily bath, along with a glass of wine in hand. Me? Jealous? But of course! Looking forward to seeing you meeting up with many of your previous crew, at the Annapolis boat show, in next week's episode. Cheers! Russ. Portsmouth, Hampshire, UK.

Their videos are several months behind real time. They've been back in the water for a while now.

@@natechure Yes, I am very well aware of that, as I have their 'Where's Delos' app. They've just posted this episode, so I'm commenting as though it is real time. Logical to me, if not to you. I'm Autistic. What's your excuse? ;-)
