I’m team “not to have boxwood hedge”. Just not a look that I prefer. I think your romance country garden plan works much better with your lovely property. Just my opinion. ❤
Be cautious of boxwood moths, blight, etc. Maybe they’re not prevalent in your area but certainly where I am I’m starting to replace yew bushes instead of using boxwood.🌷🇨🇦
I have a number of boxwood hedges and am surprised by the rate of growth. They grow faster than expected and are really a pain to trim. Without placing a cloth to catch the trimmed leaves clean up is tedious.
Your shade garden is looking so pretty; the bruneras have really come on, and look soft and dainty, especially when contrasted with the hostas. Janey, no disrespect to Mr Glassman, but that space calls for a really soft and gentle planting style, with lots of aquilegias (think you call them columbines in America), haconechloas grasses spilling over the edges, astrantias, lady’s mantles and all manner of shade loving, soft perennials. I think a boxwood hedge would make this lovely relaxed space too formal and a bit austere. And no, you definitely don’t need any more heucheras -as lovely as they are! 😂 Too many other plants clamouring for attention, such as thalictrums, which would look gorgeous against that white wall. The list is endless! Perhaps you could plant a boxwood hedge around the circle area, at the end of the shade garden, which would frame it nicely, and perhaps even extend it to your checkered patio. Greetings from England 🏴
I'm going to chime in here and say NO to boxwood. It's just not your style and I agree about the soft and gentle look. I also suggest ferns for that shaded garden. I have them in my shade garden and love the look. That would fill in some of those blank places very nicely.
Maybe add some boxwood shrubs in the 4 corners at the square border near the fountain or boxwood topiaries (😍) somewhere in there but not a formal hedge. It would be too formal for your country setting. All in all a beautiful start on your new property. Love watching you guys working together to create the home/garden of your dreams❣️
Well done Janey & Jason 😍 I’m thinking a boxwood hedge would make the space look very narrow, then with what you’re adding to the trellises and arches, it would feel claustrophobic when walking/sitting in that area. Remember country romance Janey 😉 private yet airy and light.
Wouldn't it better to grow vines up trellises rather than growing on the house. It may look nice but I've heard negatives comments about growing on walls of the houses. The garden is really coming along! Looks Great!!!
If planting small/dwarf boxwoods keeping trimmed in a sphere shape not actual hedge form would look very nice with your shaded perennials behind or among them.😊 Having boxwoods on property will have green and interest all four seasons plus less maintenance. Happy Gardening!
What if you did a boxwood ball in each of the four interior corners next to the seating and fountain area? It would add some winter interest and just a bit of structure without overwhelming the area.
I'm in favor of the shade garden being romantic country. Personally I think a formal hedge would look out of place in your garden because it would be the only formal part. It's your garden so don't feel obligated to do what Michael or anyone suggests you do.
Have you thought of “supply outposts” ? I have a large mailbox (with decorative mailbox cover) that contains spare tape measure, spare secateurs, Phillips screwdriver, regular screwdriver, spare gloves ( in airtight box to bugs out), plant ties, folding razor and anything else small you might need when away from main storage. Oh, and trowel!! Doesn’t have to be mailbox, that just easier solution for me. Just a thought . . .
I do the same! I have 3 in my yard for convenience and just bought one of Vego's garden boxes that hang on the side of their raised beds, which I love.
I love the shade garden! I'm a no on the boxwood too! I feel like if you were going to do that it should have been done first and the rest of the garden designed around it. Keep adding plants you love, not plants you feel obligated to plant!
Janey, you can have both. I love my boxwoods! They are the one shrub that is so low maintenance in my garden. They tolerate the heat, the cold, and the squirrels ignore them. Plant your romantic flowers behind the boxwood hedge which is what I have done. The hedge just makes everything neat and tidy and in no way takes away from the softness of my other plants. Just prune your boxwoods with rounded edges. Just drop the word formal and everyone will relax.
Love seeing your garden develop. I like your Country Romance idea better than formal English Garden. I don’t think you really have room for hedges and they would be more work to keep trimmed. Go with Hostas and ferns.
No on the boxwood hedges for me. I love your free flowing look to your garden. Plus boxwood always has spider mites in California. I noticed that when I moved here.
i wouldn't go with the boxwood hedge. I like the idea of your romance country garden plan. Thanks Jason for helping so much. Everything is looking so good. This is my favorite show I watch every day!!!
I agree, no hedge! With a beautiful path like that, it feels fitting to have perennials and ground covers spilling out of the boarders onto the path to create a lot naturalistic boarderless look
I love what you've done so far! I think a short boxwood hedge in the shade garden would be lovely, but I'm not sure it goes well with the granite walkway. Boxwood goes better with formal paving, I think. Maybe it's better to allow plants to naturally soften the edges of the walkway and keep the space casual. A hedge would add another level of maintenance, too, so unless you love them, I'd carry on without. The heuchera looks great!
I love the idea of English garden, it already has that vibe with the fountain and the iron patio and the vining walls set-up. Plus you talked about adding topiary too. I think it would elevate the space and challenge you to learn how to do another type of design. I can already see it added in there, it would be so beautiful. I think you would be glad you stepped out of your comfort zone if you try it. I think Michael Glassman has a beautiful eye for garden design. I would trust him and do it!
I like your ideas for shade garden! Not small hedges. You are a romantic Gardner in my opinion and it has so much more interest!! I love the Cora Bells. I have a few! I am in Ky. And they thrive through the cold winters!! Enjoy your videos!!💗
That bistro set would look much better black. The window would look great with black shutters. Love the idea of the climbing vine up the wall. Love the idea of the boxwood hedge because of how small the area is. It would be like a secret garden for the girls. Love it
I'm not that keen on the boxwood hedge...especially with the heucheras. Some lovely ferns, toad lilies (tricyrtis), hardy geraniums (Rosanne, Bill Wallis), acorus, spider plants with reverse variegation, would be nice. Hellebores are beautiful but not good for dogs if they nibble on them. Some azaleas would be nice here and there. Also, more hakonechloa (Japanese forest grass) in various colors would be really striking! Your beautiful brunneras reminded me that I should find a few for my shade gardens. You will love your shade garden as an oasis from the heat in summer. Also fatshedera are nice in shade and add a little height and bold foliage. So exciting to watch this garden take shape!
A hedge would take up half the gardening space you have there. I love what you’ve done already. A couple of boxwoods in beautiful pots may look nice as a compromise. 🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌸
The steady transformation of your property, improving it so much and with so much hard work involved, is truly remarkable. And btw, I absolutely agree with all the others that have posted that a boxwood hedge would look out of place in your garden.
Love the checkerboard of heuchera - maybe mimic it to all four corners? Or at least bring the purple over - the last shot with the sun down really showed the punctuation of that arrangement!
You and Jason should take a day trip or even an overnight trip while he is off so he has some fun time even though working in the garden with you I’m sure is fun and wonderful for him. Enjoy a day trip together.❤
Go team Janey & Jason! Love the way the shade garden is developing. A mini hedge of boxwood would be a lovely surprise and would add a touch of elegance in that area. Monty digging the holes in the wrong places - I can relate. There’s a reason why pups are so darn cute! 😂
Don't feel bad about your tape measure - I lost my trowel, and think it might have been dumped into our garbage company's compost bin! That led me to have to buy another one, but actually the new one is even better. It is a Corona "transplanter," which means that one side of it is serrated, which is great to cutting roots, and the other side is smooth, plus it is slimmer than a regular trowel, so it can get into tight places much easier. It also has a padded ergonomic handle with a finger guard. I sure love those Heucheras are gorgeous! I find their little flowers rather magical-looking. Since you asked, I love the country romance theme throughout your property better than a totally separate room with boxwoods. I read that dwarf boxwoods only grow 1/2" - 1" a year. It would probably be easier to wait for the one climbing hydrangia than an entire boxwood border. Btw, was Monty eating the wood chips??
Yes, on boxwood hedge or even some placed sporadically in the area and kept in globe form if you don't want a full-on hedge to maintain. They offer such great foundational and evergreen interest in the garden.
I like how you take care of your house and your plants, but I also like that you have time for your family, and also time for you to go to the beauty salon, I also have to go to the beauty salon. Don’t forget to drink lots of water.
No boxwood! All the trimming and maintenance. Plus wouldn’t you want to be surrounded by all those beautiful lush plants instead of a stiff formal garden. I think it would blend in better with the rest of your garden. Maybe throw the boxwoods around your patio in front…
I will be shopping at target tomorrow because I have to have those pink gloves! Now you and hubby need to take a trip to Australia, my husband and I were there four years ago and what a beautiful place, what a beautiful experience!
You are so right about Aus. I live in West Australia and after traveling the world, I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. So glad you enjoyed visiting our beautiful country.
I love the idea of a garden supply wagon but how do you only own one tape measure? 🤔 I have three in a drawer in my garage tool chest, one magnetically hung at my workbench, one for each car and one for inside the house. That way I'm never using the garage ones for indoors or visa versa and I've got one in the truck/car when I need it for camping or measuring something at the hardware store. Get some cheap at harbor freight or Amazon and put them everywhere. 😂
Also, I can't even believe the difference in your soil quality from the time you first moved into now. You were digging pretty deep holes and it is a totally different kind of soil. amazing.
Great choice on the false hydrangeas! I planted them on three of the four exterior walls of my home. They are awesome! The oldest one really took off last year and is well on its way to covering the front wall. When it gets to a window or the eaves, I simply prune it back, no problem. I think you'll find you won't need the wires. You're going to love them!
Was watching your coffee talk, we had three acres and loved are stock tank pool. All four of us could sit in it. I could even put two chaise lounges in it to cool off. Was so easy to make. Don’t paint! We had it three years was great, I saw a video about painting-did proper etch, prime, paint and it still peeled a year later and was a mess. You can even buy an inflatable hot tub and hook its pump/heater up and it turns it into a hot tub.
@@katiedavis5861 not at all. We kept net hanging near it, scooped out leaves or bugs, kept it covered with in insulated bubble top cheap on Amazon (I’m in Colorado and cold nights) and had the chlorine tabs we dropped in this little thing that floated in it. Used it May through September. Drained it through plug, flipped it over during winter until we did the hot tub thing. Once or twice had to test it and add some extra chlorine or borax. We got a lot of use out of it.
I love lungwort! It adds such a different look in my deep shade areas. And I also love Bleeding Heart but I don't know if those grow well in a California zone.
Janey , Good Morning, I can totally see a line of Your Products in Target . “ Dig Plant. Water Repeat “ T-Shirts And Hats , gloves as a set for Mothers Day . They can display garden stuff around your t-shirts.
Hi Janey…. FYI… make sure you get boxwoods that are resistant to boxwood blight and spider mites…. I just had an invasion? Had to cut my boxwoods way back…. They are in the front of my house and I’m so sad.. they are bald with just a few a new leaves on them.🥰🌺🦋 I think Linda Vater uses “Better Boxwoods”.💐
I am not a fan of boxwood hedge- not sure if it is because I just don’t like boxwood but I think formal hedge is right for that area. Please step back and think about it for a while.
Beautiful! Maybe instead of a boxwood edge, add a few round boxwood to start with around the corners where you just placed the heucheras! i think it would be very pretty and less maintenance! What i dislike about a long edge is that if a few are not doing well… it ruins the whole look… But i can definitely see a few trimed round boxwoods to add structure and year round interest!
Boxwoods are pretty and make a nice hedge and they seem to grow quickly for us in our zone 8b...however, your husband mentioned he hates the catbox and a word of caution - boxwoods smell like cat urine. Especially when you trim them and/or brush up against them, or it's just a hot day and the odor is wafting off of them. We had a hedge near our swimming pool and had to relocate them somewhere else in the garden where we could not smell them.
Thank you both, I have been growing Hydrangeas for over 40 years and didn’t know there were climbing ones. Now I’m looking at the back yard trying to find a spot for one. Green Acres sound have them. Enjoy these moments together 🌻🌻
Are you not worried about your house getting damaged from the plants attaching to your stucco? I have always heard that that could cause damage. Can't wait to see the progress of the shade garden!
I have 4 of the false climbing hydrangea and love them. Planted them last Spring and they are really doing good! Enjoy!! They will look beautiful in your white stucco walls.
No boxwoods. I think 💭 the boxwoods would take away from your beautiful flowers. That’s all you would see when you look into the garden. I like the country romance theme. Flowers spilling over the borders would be a nice addition. JMHO. 😊
Your shade garden is blooming with color! Very pretty! I have a shade garden and my 14 year old dog loves to sit on certain hostas, she's decided that is her outdoor bed, just like my flower garden is a flower bed. They have minds of their own. Monty is a nice dog and very pretty, she'll learn. Keep up the great work, I love and enjoy watching you plant your flowers! Jason is a hugh help to you, you have a nice relationship and it shows.
I must be honest im obsessed with boxwood.. make the shade secret room something different like a surprise when you walk through something different. I’m team go for it! If not a box hedge then at least consider the 4 corners to be spheres - there is something magical about English cottage gardens
Love the false hydrangea idea!! I have a retaining wall with a giant crack (it’s an old house) and we’ve patched it several times and it just wants to show. This is a great solution!!!
I'm hoping you keep it romantic country, BECAUSE.....I'm doing a shade garden along with you, and I'm not doing boxwood. LOL. I ordered some J of D brunneria today because of you. Love your channel. I hope Jason can join full-time. He's an absolute delight.
I just received your hats and already used the tan/blue trucker cap today. Perfect timing as I'll see my BFF next week and gift her the mauve one for her birthday. She and her daughter are planning a plant sale so I definitely want to pick out some from her collection. Her property is even larger than yours and on a big lake in the Twin Cities (Minnetonka). We're both recovering plant collectors. Well, me more recovering than she. I've been retired from Target 🎯 Marketing ten years, but remember when buyers would introduce exciting new lines at our meetings. I only "grow" silk flowers indoors. ☺️
Hi Janey and Jason. The shade garden will look great. A nice space to have afternoon drinks. Loving your improvements on the yard. It’s come a long way in a short time. Still have frost here waiting to plant stuff in my new raised beds. Happy gardening
Hey Janey, everything looks beautiful! A lot of progress in a short amount of time! 😮 One suggestion I have from a design perspective would be to make the area where the table and chairs are larger and centered under the window. I think the window would be a nice anchor/backdrop. Just a thought!
What about placing boxwoods sporadically in your gardens .. very in keeping with romantic feel but not quite as formal. The dense evergreen would look beautiful amongst the flowers and shrubs. 🌺🍃
My mom did this in her gardens. Added a touch of formality and structure to her otherwise very romantic arrangements. She did prune them but didn’t shape them like topiaries or balls.
Janey, the shade garden is shaping up beautifully! Not sure if these grow well in your area, but consider a yew hedge instead of boxwood. They perform great in partial shade and deep shade. And (at least in my area - metro Detroit) they aren't bothered by pests. I have both boxwood hedges and yew hedges in my gardens that are about 25 years old. The yew hedge doesn't get berries (poisonous to pets and kids) and is about 2.5 ft high. Requires a once yearly trim - very low maintenance.
Hi Janey Erin the Impatient Gardener has a Climbing Hydrangea those take forever to takeoff, but I think the False Hydrangeas grows a bit faster as you can see you have blooms already! 🤞
Boxwood would be a wonderful addition to your shade garden. Even if you didn't want to have a formal hedge, they would be a wonderful addition in groupings of 3 or even anchoring the corners. I have the dwarf english boxwood in my garden, and they require minimal pruning. Go for it!
We have 5 acres of hilly property here in So Cali, I had the same issue with all my garden tools and drip supplies, my husband gifted me with a Milwaukee 😅 caddy system (Home Depot) . Talk about a game changer I never have to run to my garden shed once I have it loaded with whatever I need. Just a thought😃
Boxwood would look nice but also would add a lot of maintenance and contrition. Janey, if you want the look of English garden, go for it! On the other hand if you really want the freedom of Cal-country romance with a touch of industrial, then find some lamium or or low shade plant and line the edges to create a sense of secret garden with luscious mess and the feeling of just being in a green dream…you just got to decide what will complete your vision!!😊😊😊
I planted a climbing hydrangea last year. It is only about an inch bigger at this point. I did notice that there is one stem that seems like it might be going for it to put on a little more growth. If yours is anything like mine, it definitely will not reach the top wire. Mine would not even reach the bottom wire at almost a year later. Gardeners plant with hope and this is one that I think will show off once it gets going and make the waiting time worth it.
Linda Vater said she regrets doing a formal hedge all around her potager. If she had done another one, she said she would have only put boxwood at corners of it and not completely outlining it. Maybe put a boxwood just in the corners of the beds. We have a sandbox for our dogs to dig in. That seems to satisfy their urge to dig and they don't dig around the rest of the yard.
Hi Janey and Jason. Oh my your shade garden is looking great!, love the coral bells in groups looking awesome. Have a wonderful rest of the day. And hope your daughter enjoyed her day. 🙂👋
I’m team “not to have boxwood hedge”. Just not a look that I prefer.

And I think boxwoods would take up too much space and you need space in your shade garden for all those wonderful plants waiting to be owned!
Those two windows in the shade garden would look pretty with shutters on them and window boxes! More growing space😎❤️❤️❤️❤️
I think that is a great idea. With the bistro set there, it would look like a Paris sidewalk cafe. Such a good idea.
Great idea! Brings character to the house.
Excellent idea! Maybe even some window boxes.

I totally agree! Love those suggestions…I would like some ferns…do Columbine and bleeding hearts work in your zone? Liguria?
I agree with many of these comments - NO to a boxwood hedge. It just doesn’t fit the country aesthetic you have.
I'm going to chime in here and say NO to boxwood. It's just not your style and I agree about the soft and gentle look. I also suggest ferns for that shaded garden. I have them in my shade garden and love the look. That would fill in some of those blank places very nicely.

I think you should go with the country romance theme in the secret garden. Boxwoods would take more upkeep keeping them trimmed as a hedge.
True! And they can really take up space. Too rigid a look for the softness and shade cottagey look here.
Janey imo no boxwoods you like color and textures
Well done Janey & Jason 😍
I’m thinking a boxwood hedge would make the space look very narrow, then with what you’re adding to the trellises and arches, it would feel claustrophobic when walking/sitting in that area.

Black shutters would look super cute and charming on those windows in the side garden….
Everyone needs a Jason in their garden! Good job guys 😊

It's great to have help with gardening, I love it when my hubby works with me , we get so much more done.
Love heucheras as well, you should try some astilbes in between, you will get some hights and beautiful flowers 🌺🌺

I vote country romance. I think boxwoods will really crowd the space. It’s all looking great!!!
Happy Earth Day everyone! 🌱🌎
Love seeing you and Jason working together. Hope this is the future of DPWR.❤
I love the coral bells in the red, yellow, purple, and orange varieties!
The shade garden is looking so good. Love the new plants. Love and blessings 🩷💚🩷
Love that you opened with a snippet into the real everyday life ❤❤❤❤
Some hostas would give a pop! 'Stained Glass" is a beauty...chartruese!
No boxwood hedge. I love the direction you are going with it. It is a really beautiful side garden already.

Hey Janie and Jason, loved the idea of informal country romance instead of boxwoods formal. Hugs
love this garden. maybe master Gardener friends will share hostas with you.

😃🎉 Excellent
I subscribed to your channel 🙏
Beautiful❤ Happy Earth Day Janey and Jason❣️ It’s a great day for planting🪻🌲
I've been considering doing a stock tank pool for a few years now. I'm just concerned about the maintenance, is it too bad?
@@katiedavis5861 not at all. We kept net hanging near it, scooped out leaves or bugs, kept it covered with in insulated bubble top cheap on Amazon (I’m in Colorado and cold nights) and had the chlorine tabs we dropped in this little thing that floated in it. Used it May through September. Drained it through plug, flipped it over during winter until we did the hot tub thing. Once or twice had to test it and add some extra chlorine or borax. We got a lot of use out of it.
@@kmsch986 oh wow that's not bad at all! Thank you for replying ❤️🙏
You should add some of the Pink a Blue Lungwort into that area...coleus will be pretty mixed on too.
I love lungwort! It adds such a different look in my deep shade areas. And I also love Bleeding Heart but I don't know if those grow well in a California zone.
Janey, can you plant a Japanese maple on in the shade garden? I feel like a small dwarf one would be so cute! Maybe like a Mikawa yatsubusa?
Janey , Good Morning, I can totally see a line of Your Products in Target . “ Dig Plant. Water Repeat “ T-Shirts
And Hats , gloves as a set for Mothers Day . They can display garden stuff around your t-shirts.
Hi Janey…. FYI… make sure you get boxwoods that are resistant to boxwood blight and spider mites…. I just had an invasion? Had to cut my boxwoods way back…. They are in the front of my house and I’m so sad.. they are bald with just a few a new leaves on them.🥰🌺🦋
I think Linda Vater uses “Better Boxwoods”.💐
Wow!! That space is really coming together. It's beautful! The pathways really add so much to everything, Great job and so inspiring !
I am not a fan of boxwood hedge- not sure if it is because I just don’t like boxwood but I think formal hedge is right for that area. Please step back and think about it for a while.
Love boxwood!!! Amo los arrayanes!!! Sí, sí, sí
Janey the shade garden is beautiful !
Are you not worried about your house getting damaged from the plants attaching to your stucco? I have always heard that that could cause damage. Can't wait to see the progress of the shade garden!
Yuk on the boxwoods IMHO . Your shade garden is coming along ,so sweet and kind of romantic, adding stuffy boxwoods would crowd it .
Boxwoods will take up all your planting space.
Love the overalls they are very flattering
Plant boxwood now and by end of next season you will have a hedge. Plant 1ft apart. You’ll love them.
Looking forward to this months garden tour(s). So much has happened this month.
Boxwood hedge would be beautiful!!! Even if you don’t do a hedge, boxwoods are a wonderful addition to any garden!!😊
Hi Janey Erin the Impatient Gardener has a Climbing Hydrangea those take forever to takeoff, but I think the False Hydrangeas grows a bit faster as you can see you have blooms already! 🤞
You are correct
Janey, I am so excited to see this garden. I love side hidden gardens, there just something so special and whimsical about side gardens.
Boxwood would be a wonderful addition to your shade garden. Even if you didn't want to have a formal hedge, they would be a wonderful addition in groupings of 3 or even anchoring the corners. I have the dwarf english boxwood in my garden, and they require minimal pruning. Go for it!
Thanks!
Thank you my friend! I appreciate the support! 💗Janey
The shade garden is really shaping up! Love that room feel!!! ❤
Paint your bistro set a beautiful bright color. It fades into the stucco. Maybe your sage green.
I love seeing you and Jason working together. This video was so nice. I can't wait to see the Rose Sensation to grow.
Lusciousness not mess!
Lamium, ajuga, astilbe
So many varieties of hostas... even mini ones,
They have many options that look like box that don’t have half the issues.. box are divas!
I was thinking lamium also!
I bought the kit from Josh and LOVE the products!!!
Hi Janey and Jason.
Oh my your shade garden is looking great!, love the coral bells in groups looking awesome.
Have a wonderful rest of the day. And hope your daughter enjoyed her day.
🙂👋
