    There is nothing on this subject this in depth, it’s genius, thank you for taking the time to experiment and sharing your findings, that evergreen is a beautiful glaze.

    Couldn't stop saying "Oh wow!" Totally enjoyed the video. Excellent video! I didn't mind the length, 1 cup of coffee with two oatmeal cookies. Tenmoku Gold! Holy cow that is gorgeous! So classy and elegant. The one earlier on, iridescent white on white clay made me think of a wedding centerpiece gift, also classy and elegant. Thank you for holding the pieces close enough to the camera in great light, and still enough to see the textures created by the glazes. I found it extremely interesting and must watch it again to take notes. That was a great lesson. Will look forward to seeing how you use these in the future. Thank you very much! -jw

    Just to sum up the firing, the B-mix was enhancing the fluxing nature of the glazes. The speckle clay behaved better which is #455 from Pottery Supply House in Toronto. All the tea bowls were better as to running, the rice bowls seemed to run more on the outside. This was a surprise since the Strontium Crystal magic was only half way down the outside. I am doing another firing tomorrow with 30 tea bowls and glasses glazed in a similar way with the glaze on speckle clay only, with the bottom 2cms (1inch) left bare. I will also fire them on stilts for insurance. The iron glazes worked best although the Fake Ash was scrumptious. Solving the running by lowering the flux would probably reduce the crystal quality in the glazes, so glazing the outside of bowls with less SCM and firing on stilts seems the logical next step.

      Thanks! I will watch for your next post. Your plan for next test makes perfect logical sense to me. Til next time then. Cheers! -jw

    Thanks for your videos on strontium crystal magic.
    I made this glaze a couple weeks ago. Do you think you would’ve had a different look if you had dipped the strontium over your coloured glaze?

      I am not sure. I have used it with my oatmeal glazes which I like a lot.

    Thanks for the show. I do use CM cool and warm however I spray all glazes on the outside of my pots and do get runs but more from the ash glazes I use. I think you’re on to something if you use a thinner coat of CM .... I think that’ll help with running
    Like that oatmeal glaze you use...mind sharing

      I have new tests going up this weekend. The oatmeal is a satin white glaze with 1% iron ochre and a table spoon of illmenite, it works as a liner too, there are many variations on Pinterest, type in Satin white cone 6 glaze. I use zircopax in one of my whites but the oatmeal has 3.5% tin oxide and 3.5%titanium dioxide.

    I use SCM on almost everything but I use a very thin coat over the whole piece and never have a problem with it running over the foot.

      Thanks, I figured it out after the first firing results. Now I use it thinner, more watered down, and only glaze the upper half of the ware.

    Good afternoon, really enjoy your work and your videos. I was wondering in your experience is there something similar to the speckled clay#455? I live in the Kentucky and the shipping is quite high for the pottery supply house in canada.

      Try Columbus Clay Company, Bill Dave or John will figure something out. Standard clay112 looks the same, made in Pittsburgh. standardceramic.com/collections/clay/products/112-brown-clay

    Hi Vaughan, i know it's been some time since you posted this video series but I'm just getting around to experimenting with scm. My kiln looks like it's going to run for about 20 hours using the steve hill slow cool firing schedule. Did your kiln run that long?

    • @Vsmithpots
      @Vsmithpots  Рік тому

      Unfortunately yes. These slow cooling cycles are very energy consuming. My program is slightly shorter.

    Will the bowls be food safe?

    • @Vsmithpots
      @Vsmithpots  3 роки тому +1

      I am not sure since the regular glaze is over the top and the SCM is in the upper third underneath. I would suggest the lemon slice test leaving it on the glaze overnight and see if you can see the shape of the slice after removing it. That is why I use it on the outside of mugs in the upper 1/3. On bowls if there is ever any doubt I tell customers to use them as bread or fruit bowls. Dry foods. Most true crystalline glazes are not safe.

    How does one cure pinholing?

    • @Vsmithpots
      @Vsmithpots  3 роки тому

      I find it is from over firing but it could be an underfired glaze. You can usually tell if the glaze is very shiny and runs vertically down the pot. If non of that is apparent then it would be appropriate to raise the firing temperature or soak the kiln for longer, a longer soak usually helps because it can raise the cone by one. It can also be too low a bisque firing so gases are burning out of the clay through the glaze.

    Vaughn, Well yes I watched the whole thing. Are you going to do the same in reduction?

    • @Vsmithpots
      @Vsmithpots  4 роки тому +1

      Not until I can figure out why my iron glazes go mat in reduction. Iron is supposed to be a flux in reduction but I am getting all four of my iron glazes going mat. My research indicates that the iron is fluxing so much that it is forming crystals on the surface that make the surface mat. So i will try mixing new iron glazes with 30%less iron. It has been warm here but next week looks too cold to be outside packing kilns. I am firing the bowls upside down on stilts to see if the glaze rums melt back into the wall/foot. Stay tuned. Miss you guys.
