  • Host Harry Kreisler welcomes Harvard's Joseph S. Nye,Jr.,for a discussion of his new book, "The Future of Power." Nye offers a typology of power and explains the importance of a strategy shaped by an intelligent assessment of context and resources. He explores the differences between military, economic, and soft power and argues that understanding this complexity makes for the possibility of smart power. Nye also discusses the rise and fall of great powers but emphasizes the importance of the diffusion of power especially apparent in the communications revolution which has created new actors and new rules of the game. POWER IN THE 21ST CENTURY: THE BANALITY OF SOFT POWER 9:06
And it is within the public diplomacy milieu that soft power has become banal. I do not mean to suggest that Nye’s original term is banal but rather that soft power is now often employed in a banal manner. by Ilan Manor - Oct 21, 2019

What's the return on billions of dollars spent annually, for decades, in Africa? Corruption, war and dependency. Well done, Mr. Nye! And I take offense when you describe America's extraordinary efforts to assist Indonesian in their time of need, after the tragic tsunami, as soft power. America is the most giving nation in history because of our christian values, as such, love for fellow man(woman) motivates us, not power.
