What a game it would have been if this great Australia team played the great West Indies team of the early 1980’s.
That bit of commentary by Bill Lawry, when Merv Hughes bowled Mike Gatting with the last ball of the day in the 1993 Ashes, is one of the most iconic ever. Typical Bill Lawry, it’s what made him one of the best.

@@jaydemartin2622 in tests, they were still a good side despite the slide in ODI cricket. Credit must be given to Netherlands who played out of their skins to beat WI in the qualifiers.

This is McGrath at , or very near, his peak.
I actually think McGrath was at his peak the year before. He was masterful in the WI in 1999. Took a fiver in most of the innings he bowled in. This was a much weaker WI team though. No Ambrose, Walsh was their but there wasn’t anything after.
@@juanestadian8471you are totally correct. Unfortunately the West Indies didn't have any world class replacements for the great players that had retired. The conveyor belt of world class talent that they had in the late 1970's and 1980's had dried up.
@@mrkipling2201 exactly. I remember, even though I was only a little boy, less than ten, wondering what would happen after Ambi and Walsh retired. Those two gentlemen went way past the typical time limit of a paceman, simply because they loved WI cricket that much. Ambrose was still exceptional when he retired and Walsh was actually getting better as a bowler when he retired. I think though the constant beating started to get to them though

West Indies got absolutely pummelled. Imagine having to sit through 5 Tests of that rubbish. First Test, first day and they were bowled out for 82 with 5 ducks.

David Hookes, the late Australia test batsman stated in 2000 before this series West Indies did not deserve 5 Tests and offered no challenge. Yeah, nobody disagreed.as West lndies lost 5-0.
Another series coming up in 2024. Let's see how WI cope up with Starc, Hazlewood, Cummins and Lyon.

I remember this series well...Wes Indies played nothing at all..
West Indies were playing a team of world class players, while they only had 2, maybe 3, world class players themselves. With one of them at the end of his career. A total mismatch unfortunately. Although a lot of the games Australia played back then were a mismatch!!

Lets be honest...terrible pitches with uneven bounce were also responsible for the success of WI pace battery..
