- this embark was on a whim and turned out fair.. I then retired out of boredom as the gobbos failed to send a proper siege
notes of interest:
1. vampire king ate god knows how many dwarves, yet everyone kind of just went about their business like nothing was happening
2. bears are awesome. by the end we had both regular and giant varieties
3. the bridge attracted all the goblin ambushes and made for a great defense, except for that one time a dwarf dodged off the side and fell 32 z-levels
4. i like diamonds - Ігри
needs unregistered hypercam music otherwise a great video
absolutely stunning fort by the way. Maybe you could make a video on how to build aesthetic fortresses in the furure? Or something about best practices for building good-looking fortresses? Because this is really really good.
also also please share the save file with us if possible.
@@Esoteric_5075ism hmm I think I can bring up the file later today, I will edit the description of this video.
thanks for the compliments I appreciate you even watched this lazy compilation haha .. all I can say is for aesthetics in DF is that you must have understanding of aesthetics OUTSIDE DF to properly apply them in-game. if only because generating specific colors / textures / shapes from the game engine can be obtuse, frustrating, or straight up impossible.
so this is perhaps why I find designing in DF so compelling. This meta-game of acquiring the proper materials for your constructions, will all the heroic violence and social drama involved, and then applying that material in a certain way..
my first tip is to have a clear vision of what you want to create, and try to make that creation fit into the existing environment, in a somewhat realistic way.
essentially, design in DF is about aesthetically reproducing the impression of a physical reality such that the viewer might interpret the various blocks and items as having a greater meaning. you literally build a story into the brickwork, yeah?
@@nijinskiydf >you need to have a sense of aesthetics outside of dwarf fortress
damn. Well there goes that. Guess I'll just build a dwarven calculator instead. Thanks for the tips though. I honestly struggle the most with just getting a solid idea of what I want to build. Most of my forts just degenerate into vertical circular bedrooms and lots of winding maze-like pathways through more blobby rooms. Lots of multi-story overlooks aswell.
Then I give up halfway through digging the spaghetti out and start anew lol.
One must imagine Sisyphus happy I suppose.
my soliution to this problem was forcing myself to endure 1x1 or 1x2 embarks until i was capable of making aesthetically pleasing compact functional bases
when you go back to 3x3 embarks it feels better@Esoteric_5075ism

Quite enjoyed your little notes of events. Do you do it as you play or post?
Personally I throw sticky notes with previous thoughts and ideas for the forts.
thx I scribble notes as I play, its a habit from all the succession games I used to play on the bay12forums.
re: sticky notes, having that additional narrative is what makes this game amazing!! you should share your concepts
I will definitely keep this in mind next time I play a colony sim!
what do you use for the notes?
a cropped notepad++ window, with the various in-built color themes.
