Wonderful video! As a third year student of architecture this was refreshing to hear compared to the dreamlike world of academia. I’m thankful that my school teaches similar ideas but not every professor thinks the same way and some get lost in meaningless ‘intentions’, I suppose that’s why they give most of their focus to academia. Keep doing what you do, people like you are those who will bring respect and principle back to architecture and hopefully we will get to see respect and agency returned to the profession!

Well the topic is old as architecture it's self. Brunnelschi was a goldsmith , Michelangelo , Bernini were sculpturist , Bramante, Raffaello, Vasari were painters,Leon Battista Alberti was a philosopher and so on and most of them gave the interpretation of architecture through their experience expect for Andrea Palladio which he was really an architect ,he began as a stone cutter and he had a deep understanding of his job. He wrote that an architect should be an intellectual bricklayer and he wasn't quite wrong . Architects are artisan even today ,in the digital era, and should not forget about this, and they should know how to use this new tools in a profund manner rather than for whim .

Just maybe a small side-note, the work of Filip Dujardin you showed is not a actual building but a digital composition of architectural details that he has collected as a photographer. Then on the other hand, I get why you chose the image.
By being a part of the Architectural school that was more paying attention to the engineering side, I thought that I am missing something that other schools had. That philosophy skill to talk about buildings. I always felt that there has to be something more and there is.
I once asked...where do those stories come from...then something happened while on my way to work on a bus...l was folding the bus ticket...until the material split. The failed creases resembled a bird in flight. I spent the next two years trying to learn...what a simple sheet of 8.5 x 10 sheet of paper could become. Along the way... thousands of versions of the bird in flight were given to anyone who happen to be next to me. Finally...the perfect bird was done...and they too were given to anyone and everyone...anywhere.
The learning process evolved into it's own unique story that explains in part...its transformation.
In Architecture, because of the length of time it takes to actually get an idea built...the same happens.

Thank you for this amazing video, it is very insightful and gets deep into the meta of architecture - such interpretations and introductions are precious, rare to come across.
Mark Foster Gage has compiled some essential texts for aesthetics in architecture & design which I think is very relevant to this discussion. I believe that narrative does not and should not necessarily enrich the way a building is received. The building is an object which has certain aesthetic qualities (some of which can be measured via neuroscience) and should be evaluated in that way. The narrative or references the architecture makes is just "conceptual ornamentation" to me... added on for effect and marketing.

Honestly, Architecture should NEVER resemble Art. By definition, Art is devoid of function and becomes meaningful only through context. Hence anything can become art. Architecture on the other hand may NEVER be devoid of function, because it would immediately become very bad architecture. IMHO the shapes of buildings should always revolve around the human form and it's intended use. The combination of form and function and scale and context can produce magnificent buildings, completely outrages spaces, which are still functional.
IF you are an architect, please, don't ever aspire to create art when designing a building. If you do so, you are failing your profession.

Honestly, i think architects should stop trying to be so philophical and start expanding the term of functionalism, so that buildings can become catalysts for the intended use and not a piece of art. Built structure should be made for ordinary people and not for the artistical expression of an architect. I mean they can be if it actually adds to the function, like in a church, but otherwise it should not be the main focus.

I don't think architecture has to be art or have story or meaning. It can be artisan and just fulfill its job in a practical and esthetic way without alk this BS.
