  • At less than $60 USD, the new Lutron Caseta Wireless Fan Control is a lot cheaper than $200+ smart fan alternatives, but is it the right product for your smart home setup? Also, what is it like to use and control the fan with apps and your voice?

    I agree. Caseta smart switches are superior to all others and this fan controller does not disappoint. Installed four last week. Great video.

    Great video! I need to add some of these to my setup. I love the Lutron Caseta line. All of my fans already have separate switches from the lights, so these would be perfect. Thanks for sharing!

    I love this setup, I have been using mine for a year and a half. I have set up some cool automations for the summer and winter through the Eve app. In the winter when the HVAC system turns on it automatically turns on the fan to 25% to help move the air in my main living area. In the summer, when my Netatmo indoor module detects the temperature inside is above 22 degrees I have the fan turn on to 100%. The only thing I don’t have control of is the direction but that is a single switch flip each season. I removed the lights as we installed pot lights in the living room which are controlled via a Lutron switch as well. Great stuff!

    Another solid video!
    I’m holding-off on the smart fan switches for now...
    The inability to control the fan & light circuits from a single smart switch is a dealbreaker for me. For my MinkaAire fans, I have been using their RF enabled switches that allow for control of all features (fan speeds/direction & lighting intensity) from the wall.
    I’m not ready to forgo that functionality for App/Siri control.
    As a couple of my fans have both ‘standard’ (down) lights as well as an ‘up light’ - I assume I’m going to be waiting a LONG time for a smart switch that can accommodate my features.

      Yeah! Bummer. Although sounds like a nice setup to have while waiting for smart tech to catch up.

      I’m in the same boat. I have a $700 Casablanca fan (that I will not change - too high up and I like the way it looks) that has up and down lighting as well. I’m pretty sure the switch is just a hard wired remote as well. The manufacturer could fix this if they weren’t lazy by making their own switch that is HomeKit compatible. Sucks because it’s the most used light in the house, besides the kitchen. I’ve got almost everything else done but this.

    I like the idea a lot of using a smart bulb & the Hue switch.. i just don’t know WTH Phillips was thinking making that remote control so big.. it doesn’t even fit a dual gang box.. otherwise i i would have bought some already. Lutron nailed it with the Pico remote, i do wish you could take the Pico remote off the wall like you can the Phillips. A suggestion for the channel If i may... for those of use that are DIY’ers... don’t skip over the wiring part so fast. I understand if your not an electrician but it would helpful if you explained your thought process at least & showed how you wired the switch so we can learn from it. I’m usually watching these videos to learn how folks wire the switches. Keep up the good work!!! I wish i had the time to start a channel b/c i want to share what i have learned on this journey to help others. this past weekend i swapped out a GE smartswitch that my electrician that wired my house did.. on the remote end of the 3 way switch i had him add an electrical outlet for my alarm panel. The lutron Caséta gets wired differently & i finally figured out how to use the traveler wires to make the outlet hot again while make the lutron Caséta master switch happy.. wished I could share that with others some way b/c most of the videos here on UA-cam on 3 way switches assume you have a load wire going to the light on the remote end of the 3 way switch (or even the 4 way) and that isn’t the case in my house but i finally figured out to wire them correctly for 3 way & 4 way switches using the Caséta

    Hi there Eric! Question: Can the Maestro light/fan combo switch be connected to the Lutron pico remote? Or would I have to buy two remotes to connect to two lutron switches??

  • @Landry0180

    Eric... I have an existing smart fan on my back porch and would love to put in one of the Lutron Caseta switches instead (for the Alexa and phone enabled ability to control it). Do I install the Caseta Fan Switch the same as if it was a non-smart fan or will it not work at all? The current status of this fan is on a regular on/off switch to enable the power and then we use a remote to adjust speed and direction. TIA!

    Eric, we just purchased a bran new cookie cutter home we have a light in the center of the great room that was pre wired for a fan, we have two switches on the wall. so I going to install the fan for one switch and the now light switch would operate the light in the fan? my goal is to have the fan light be able to be dim able?

    Good video, you seem to know your stuff. Don't forget to mention these don't work with DC fan motors. Can't wait till that comes out along with a dual switch that works the light as well like you mentioned. Just want to make sure people know this won't work on a Monte Carlo fan or something similar to those as DC fans can have several speeds besides the usual 3 and they also come with a breeze speed where the fan will change speeds to produce a breeze in your home. I am a big supporter of the Caseta, can't wait till the next invention comes out.

      The DC motor part needs to be emphasized. I found out the hard way that none of my 4 new fans in my house could be integrated into my home automation system and was really disappointed.

    Hi Eric. Not sure what all has changed since this was done. I am building a new home and have this question: Is there an advantage to using this Lutron control with a 'smart' fan? Is that double what I need to do or a good idea?

    • @EricWelander
      @EricWelander  3 роки тому

      No I think that is more trouble than it's worth. The Lutron control should be the only part that's smart.

  • @m.j.r.technologyreveiws1075

    The video needed to show how the fan itself actually performs at the various speed settings. For example, Is the lowest setting way too slow or still too high?

      You don’t need a smart bulb with a caseta switch

  • @dragngt
    @dragngt 5 років тому +3

    If you have a separate switch for the lights and the fan control... shouldn’t you be able to wire in this smart switch to control the fans and the other set up with a smart light switch?
    Or are you simply pointing out that this switch can’t control both the lights and the fan in one unit?

    • @EricWelander
      @EricWelander  5 років тому +1

      The second idea you mentioned is exactly it...I’m simply pointing out that the single switch can’t do both. I don’t have room in my switch boxes for another smart switch and I didn’t feel like modifying those to make room for another switch, which left me with the Philips Hue switch and bulbs as my best option.

    • @Polkster13
      @Polkster13 4 роки тому +1

      All you need to do is to take the hot wire and the load wire that goes to the light part of the fan (that was removed from the switch), and put them together using a single wire nut. That way you are bypassing the switch that they were originally attached to (which is how you were able to turn the lights on and off from the switch) and the lights would be on all of the time. Then you would need a smart bulb installed in your fan that would then be controlled from software that would turn the lights on and off. HTH

      @@Polkster13 Well explained. To others looking for a correct answer to this question I agree with how Mr Falk summed this up. Essentially take the two wires and twist them together with a wire nut on them for permanent 'on' functionality, which will annoy the heck out of a future homeowner unless they understand there are smart lightbulbs being used. Might leave a note in the wall outlet explaining to future homeowners that you twisted the wires together to leave the lights in permanent 'on mode' for use with smart lightbulbs. But then I think of weird future stuff.... maybe don't worry about it. ;-)

    Can't I just put my fan and light wires together to the load side of this smart switch and have them both come on at the same time ? This is for an outdoor porch fan I don't care if the light is on all the times when the fan is on .

    • @EricWelander
      @EricWelander  4 роки тому +1

    • @Polkster13
      @Polkster13 4 роки тому +1

      Did you verify that you had set the fan to the highest speed at the fan using the pull chain? If it is at the lowest setting at the fan, then the fan will not change speeds from the switch. You can also look at my answer on a previous comment on how to make it where the lights are always on above

    I’ve read that the middle button of a pico remote can be programmed to control hue bulbs. With that in mind could the middle button of this switch be programmed to control a hue bulb in your fan? Thereby having a physical button to turn the lights on and off still ?

    The lack of options with these Caseta Smart Switches is really annoying. How could then not have a Fan/Light combo option! Further more how do they not have a Canopy option, where you could install a universal controller up in the canopy and then use all wireless switches! So obvious but the product development of these almost make me not want to buy them. The Light switches I have are great and works well with Google Home and the app is great. But the product development is sorely lacking.
