  • In this video I stay late at the shop to look at a '18 Chrysler Pacifica for one of my used car dealers. They installed a new active grille shutter (AGS) and claim it doesn't work. So they installed a new factory harness and it still doesn't work! Let's have a look and see what we find.

Its 8:45pm in Australia and im outside watching this with my fiance. The first thing out of her mouth is "Theres your problem lady!". You know you found the right girl when she can quote Eric while reading her book.
Anyways, Eric, thanks for not only being informative, entertaining and just funny as all heck. Youve provided me with countless hours of teaching but more importantly.....you give everyone confidence.
Confidence in that if you can do it.....we can do it. Dont be afraid when a light comes on. Educate yourself, try to fix it and save money!! But always with a slice of humble pie and know when youre over your head so when it needs a big fix by a professional, you didnt give them a rats nest of "shouldn't have done that"
Wish you and the family the best.

Mazda had a period back in the 80's where you had to order parts on VIN number ánd year and month of production, as the mounting holes on parts like fenders seemed to shift a few millimeters almost every month........ how stupid can it get? You buy the part, hold it in place and it seems to line up just fine, have the part painted and when you try to mount it, the bolts just don't fit.

That has been kicking my but for two weeks solid on a multitude of cars. Why on earth did Chrysler think it was a great idea to put so many options on 300 and Charger brakes? Even with the VIN it only narrowed it down to four. Then the rear control arms on them is about the same story.

Good stuff Eric! What they should do is include a male-female adapter that changes the wiring using a connector that connects between factory wiring and the new part to change the wire layout so if it's needed, it's included. But that would require thinking and we all know OE's... Cheap and "no thinking" at all!

Had a guy stop yesterday with a 09 youkon. He is a retired shop owner. His wife woke up went to leave for work and no headlights. She took his truck and told him to have it fixed when she got home. He stopped at my shop and told me 60 dollar bulbs replaced 3 months ago blah blah blah. I said did ya check the bulbs. He had a spare so we plugged it in. Wala let there be light. I explained to him those vintage gm eat bulbs and the fancy pants bright bulbs don't last as long. After she bought "fancy" bulbs from the auto parts stores for $50 for the pair, I got tired of replacing them after they went out a few times. I bought HD bulbs from the Rock for like $4 a bulb. Its been fine ever since. And I polished up the plastic headlights so she could actually see at night. 🙃

Eric O, that was a great case study highlighting the power of service information (SI). It's puzzling to me why some shops still today don't invest in service information (SI), considering how valuable they can be. Just think of the time and money it would've saved this used-car guy if he had SI. We're all concerned about how quickly we can get the part and how fast we can install it, but often overlook the importance of verifying the repair.

    • @scannerlanier471
      @scannerlanier471 2 місяці тому +2

Trouble is SI costs $$$$ and sometimes SI is brand specific so you spend $$$ for GM, $$$ for Toyota, $$$ for etc. You have got to consider that is the $$$ worth the use you will get out of it? Used cars are generally polish the turd and sell it. Do the obvious and ship it. They will not take the time to diagnose and use service data.

You can see it moving back and forth trying to find its home position with the glove compartment out. Also, chrysler loves to change connectors and pinouts. I think OEM charger/challenger/300 fuel pumps come with a connector kit and I've had to change to a completely different connector when replacing a fuel rail pressure sensor on an RU pacifica.

Why just the other day I was asked at the dealership for my VIN for my vehicle. I keep it conveniently located in my wallet. I also try to keep in mind some specific knowledge about my vehicle. For example, I have a Ford with a Saginaw steering box; you just never know when those parts guys are going to ask for that information. In my 38 years in HVAC, this happens because the OEM supplier makes a change without prior approval of the manufacturer! In some cases all associated cost may be charged back to supplier, but that responsibility chain ends at some point and here we are! If the OEM supplier had to pay every shop bill everywhere ! Things would change! It’s always amazing to me “they” have a reason for the change that of course benefits them! Too many people conveniently forget the person that bought the product, after all they aren’t important! Until the pink slips show up and plant closes! It’s all of our responsibility to lookout for the end user!

Hi Eric George here from Canada, Yes I agree with you on dealerships they just want our hard earned money, was talking to fried he had a ford explorer took it dealer because warranty wasready to expire he wanted oil change or just regular maintence he said , but he said he told them to do an inspection on it, because it was close to running out, they told him they could inspect it until he had a complete rotor and brake job, he ask what that would cost they told him 2000 dollars, he told them he wanted a second opinion, told them to just change the oil,/ so he comes home and takes it to a local shop here ,we only have two here,// they check his brakes and rotors and told him there was nothing wrong with his and they did not need to be changed, he said his warranty is gone so he will not be going to dealership anymore,/ as you have mentioned before they want to see you stuff you do not need, thanks Eric , always watch and find your videos very interesting, and you explain everything out with lots of details, keep up the good work, if you were running a shop near me i would be a customer of yours

Who knows, there may have been something in the box mentioning the update, just no one ever pays attention! The number of bricked $3500 GM radios I see shops installing because they don't read the bright yellow sticker on the box saying "DO NOT TURN THE CAR ON." ;)
On the off chance this Pacifica finds its way back to your shop with a non-op AGS and/or an AGS code, there's an AGS cycle counts reset under Special Functions in the PCM. Good practice to do it anytime the shutter is replaced; I've seen quite a few go wonky a week later. :)

Reminds me of Ford turn signal switches for late 60s early 70s cars. They came without the wires plugged into the connector because they had to be fed down through a tube in the steering column. The instructions were to cut the original connector off and plug the wires on the new switch into the new connector using the original to follow the color code. Unfortunately the same color wires weren't connected in the same way on the new switches. When the brakes were applied the turn signal indicators in the dash would come on as well both front turn signals.

That seems to me like a contracted-out part that got spec'd wrong, or the manufacturer read the spec wrong, then they had 100,000 of them coming down the pipes and just rolled with it and called it an engineering change rather than a f-up and fixed it in the harness.

Mid year changes should be taken care of at the time of the change by the manufacturer! My opinion. Fat chance of that happening!😵‍💫
