  • After a PocketNC showed up on my doorstep, learning 5-axis machining became my top priority. This is the story of how I went from a 5-axis know-nothing, to a 5-axis amateur.
Let this be a lesson to you all: ALWAYS participate in the Fusion Cam Challenges ;)

I have a v1 pocketNC and was one of the backers of their kickstarter for it.
A bit of advice that I have learned the hard way:
Don't over think the work holding. Just use the painter's tape + CA glue trick for most of your work.
If you are not familiar with it, there is a really good tutorial on it on NYCNC youtube channel. The tl;dr is that you apply painters tape to the stock and then also to a waste plate. After cleaning the tape with IPA, you apply CA glue to the painter's tape and then stick the stock to the waste plate.
This provides surprisingly good holding strength. So far it has not failed me in milling blocks of aluminum on my PocketNC. Though do be leary of how tall your stock it, I have not run into problems yet, but it seems like really tall stock would be a failure point for this method on a 5 axis CNC.
The bottom line is that the pocketNC just does not generate that much force on the stock. I guess that is an upside of work with such a small unit.

I love text-based tutorials (or at least, document-based). No need to wait for the presenter in a video to get to the point, easy to go back and re-read something. Videos help, of course, but docs are great!

Can't wait to finally see some high-quality 5-axis project videos using this machine! I've been waiting since the V1 but so few people have your video background and machining enthusiasm. Something about the industrial machine footage out there just feels too abstract as a hobbyist.

If i was to start my adventure with cnc(I want to make parts for rc model cars) would this machine be good assuming i can lock A and B axis and use it as 3 axis while learning and later down the road maybe use additional possibilities?

Great to see a tool like that not in a demo mode. I have an X-Carve but a 5 axis would make what little hair I have left fall out. Plus a bit to pricey for my liking.
But truly thanks for sharing, it’s much appreciated.

I've had my eye on that since v1 was on Kickstarter, but I just couldn't justify the cost, or the need. It's pretty cool that you won one Winston. I look forward to you upping your game with it.

I totally agree Mick. I have no use for 5 axis, but I already subscribe to the free version of 360 so that's not an issue. I am not interested in purchasing it as I could add a 4th and /or 5th axis to my highly modified Shapeoko for a 10th of the price if I really needed it.

The user interface of the V2 is much improved and no longer needs Xming, putty, etc. You can look at the V2 getting started tutorial to get a sense for what is involved.

Pocket NC you should donate machines to people who could use them, really sick of seeing people with haas, 5axis etc milling out 3d object files that came with the machine cause they have no hint of a creative side to actually build something. Really pisses me off. This guy got like 25k in various cnc and go through his channel and there isn't shit on here. But anyways really nice Pocket NC. I serously consider purchasing one, it's a great price but it is small and I don't have need for smaller parts that this has niche for. Well I'm actually looking into that. If diameters can be reduced. Be nice if you could do 8-10 inch diameter work volume with some decent z. Then I would dish out the 5k.

Thanks for sharing. This looks like a really cool hobby machine. I'm truly surprised you found a way to post 5-axis tool paths from Fusion 360. I worked with that program for two years and never achieved good 2-axis tool paths for my lathe. And that was after I asked over a dozen "experts" for paid help. It's good to see someone making progress with the simplest tools. Keep up the great videos!

Pretty skookum video Winston, you made it look easy, but I know how hard it is. I still want a 4th axis but never do I want the headaches of a 5-axis machine (again). I am eagerly waiting for your homemade turbo for the Subaru....

Do you think it is possible to reshapen end mills with this machine? I sharp my end mills using end mill grinder, the flutes and the rest of end mills but it is not a fun job. I know there are people out there that just replace them with new one but where I am operating, the cost of shipping is 5 times more then the cost of end mill itself.

What are your feelings about rigidity of this machine? Is this a hobbiest tool, I have seen the demo of it machining aluminum but do you think you would feel comfortable machining small stainless steel parts with it? I am concerned about chatter working with harder materials, titanium, 304 sst etc.

    • @WinstonMakes
      @WinstonMakes  5 років тому +1

Rigidity is just enough that you're able to put some science behind your feeds and speeds. It won't be fast, but you should be able to hit normal chiploads with the right depth of cut. Look up @ekramer3 on instagram. He showcased a stainless steel lanyard bead he made on the PNC, and has plans to try titanium, grade 2. 304 is tricky, 303 would be friendlier.

Does this have the torque required to carve hard rock? That means that the machine must be able to withstand constant water.

    • @WinstonMakes

The axes are not suitable for exposure to liquids, and abrasive dust would also damage the machine in the long run.

I see in the background that you've been using a Makita Trim Router on the Probably 3 axis CNC table. I just bought one myself however am yet to make the new mounting bracket. How has your experience with Makita been so far?? Earlier I was using one of those Chinese 400w quiet cut spindle which had quite a run out and burnt out fairly quickly the moment I started using 6mm end mills. When machining wood, whats the max diameter of tool you think the Makita can handle comfortably?? Can it run one of those 20 to 30 mm surfacing tools if take a 1 mm pass??

    • @WinstonMakes
      @WinstonMakes  6 років тому

I liked it enough that I bought a second, so both my Shapeoko's are running the Makita. I have used it with a 1" surfacing cutter comfortably.

I don't see a practical use for the pocket nc. The nema 34 stepper motor it uses as the drive for the spindle is barely capable of turning steel but with that much tool stick out and the weaker a and b/c axis motors, plus the small work holding and work volume of the table itself, I can't even begin to imagine what this thing would be useful for. This isn't to say it's not a very interesting machine; because it is, but faced with a choice to buy this or a cheap 3 axis cnc router or even a second 3 axis cnc router if I already owned one, I would always choose the 3 axis machine no matter how many of them I had. I suspect most people given that same choice would probably do the same. I did say *most*. XD
    Great vodeo nonetheless!

I am curious about the belt system on the rotational axes. It looked like a weird solution to me since they are usually done with worm gears for stiffnes. Can you wiggle the rotating tables at all by hand? Also - great vid, subscribed!

Can't feel any backlash by hand.

Oh it's there! I have dial two indicators, one to validate and the the other to confirm. It's there! Read my comment.

Luka, the Pocket NC version 1 used the belt drives. The Pocket NC v2 that Winston is showing here uses a worm gear drive on the rotary axes, along with several other improvements in the design of the machine. Overall, it is a more rigid, accurate and capable machine compared to the PNC v1.

So do you have the version 1 or version 2? I cant imagine a belt drive without backlash honestly, but Eddie said in a comment below that the new one uses worm gears, so if they are build in with a dialing in feature, its a pretty impressive machine i'd say.

@Eddie Kramer Thanks for the reply! :) Does the worm gear have a fixed bearing or ex center to allow for adjustment?

Thanks for the video! It looks like they downgraded the spindle from a sub-micron runout NSK Nakanishi to something else, possibly self-built. Could you investigate and possibly share some high-res pictures of the spindle assembly?

I'm copy-pasting from Ed Kramer (comment from yesterday): Here is the spec sheet on the BLDC spindle motor used in the PNC v2, including the all elusive max torque data. The spindle motor is
manufactured by Kinavo Servo Motors. www.kinavo.com/pdf/smh_ch/K60BL30-48V-144-211-3.pdf
I believe the PNC v1 used the K60BL30-48V-100-211 (based on the model
number found in publicly available Pocket NC import data found at www.importgenius.com/importers/pocket-nc-company).
The only difference seems to be max RPM (14400 rpm vs 10k rpm). The PNC
v2 is limited to 10k just like the v1 but I think the motor can go
faster. And I don't see the K60BL30-48V-100-211 model listed at Kinavo
so it may be out of production now.

Winston Moy I did not mean the motor. I meant the spindle.

Here is what I think they used to use: www.artcotools.com/nsk-nakanishi-nrr2651-lever-type-spindle.html

Why are they using a stepper motor for the spindle? Steppers are not good at high speed.

It's a 200W brushless DC spindle, it just happens to look like a stepper.

This is just for someone who likes to troubleshoot problems. I work in automation with Motoman and Yaskawa 7 axis robots ... You don't need to learn CAD .. You need to be able to program the robotics . totally different.
