- HI ANGELS - HAPPY PROM SEASON! I'M MAKING MY OWN PROM DRESS!
...even though I'm old and not going to prom lol. (this is youtube, I can pretend to be in high school forever if I want lmao) ANWYAYS: I always do celebrity clothing DIY's and make instagram things for cheap, so thought it would be fun to try and film a how to make your own dress from scratch for the first time! Even though I don't know what I'm doing and not gonna lie it didn't turn out quite as I had hoped lol, but it's still a fun video! And that's what life's all about. :P

As someone who has made my own 'prom' dress (my country doesn't technically do prom, rather a ball every year of college/high school), I know that not having knowledge of sewing or pattern making would make what you're trying to do very difficult. I am, however pleasantly surprised with the outcome, you did very well for a newcomer who doesn't sew or have any idea what you are doing.
Although, I do have some ideas that I hope will help you in the future.
1. Pick some opaque fabric for the body of the dress and layer the sheer fabric over top for a similar effect to what you did, with less overall fabric.
2. Pick up some store-bought patterns that look similar to what you are trying to do. You don't have to follow the pattern, but it will help immensely.
3. I would recommend picking up a mannequin to either display or hold the dress while you make it. Bonus, if you get a fabric mannequin you can put pins in it too.
4. Give the dress layers and keep them separate. A petticoat is generally made to be worn under the dress, not as the dress. If you want volume, just make more layers and stack them on top of each other, or get a bigger petticoat.
5. Get some sewing pins. You can use them to see what the finished product can look like, while being able to move things around.
6. Don't forget to leave a seam allowance. If you are cutting out fabric according to a pattern, leave at least 2 cm seam allowance. If you don't, you might have to cut out a whole new piece.
You don't have to take my advice and I am no professional at dress making. I just had a similar idea on how to make a dress that I presume you do, and have now learned some tips that helped me with making my own dress.
And I hope you do more videos like this, this was interesting and fun to watch.
