Umm, what the heck, I tried this today, and it worked SO well! My hair dried super quick, and I liked that I could see my hair in the mirror when scrunching in the gel so I could add more where I needed it (usually I’m still in the shower when I apply it so I can’t tell if I missed a spot). I also got a gel cast for the first time ever! 10/10 totally doing this all the time!!
Whoa! Clapping out the crunch is a game changer for me! Scrunching out disturbs my waves and then it still looks stringy frequently so I end up gently brushing it. Clapping out disturbed my waves a lot less and it looks voluminous, but smooth and not stringy. Love it and thank you!
I've been damp styling now for about 6 months! I, too, found that water was weighing my curls down and I'm too busy to let it air dry so the water would just pull my hair straight! I think your hairs turned out beautifully and this is definitely my favorite of your wash days recently. Awesome video! 🙌🏼🥰 Loved the Popeye reference haha! Blessings Courtney!
I've been experimenting with a new method - mousse, plop and gel. So mousse clumps my hair and creates the waves and then applying the gel on damp hair for hold. I find that this method is great for my fine hair! Soaking wet hair + gel tends to weigh it down so mousse helps shape the curls and then the gel with LESS water gets that hold without it being weighed down!
@@stefaniemorgan8231 you're welcome! When I started doing this I felt like I blew my own mind 😂 I did this method this morning and my waves are looking great today!
@@sarabrooks4211 I'm still experimenting so I don't have a definite set of products, but I really love the cake mousse and uncle funky's daughter curly magic! I also like using the NYM curl talk gel. I find that I get enough with a mousse + light-medium hold gel, but you may want to experiment with a hard hold gel, I really like aussie instant freeze for that. The herbal essence totally twisted curl mousse is also a great one for me, I find that it gives more of a cast.
A few months ago I started using a technique like this. All the way damp styling didn't work for me and I was having trouble with all the way soaking wet styling. So I starting doing a mixture. I do my leave in and cream upside down with a lot of water, then I micro-plop and add my styler. It has been working well so far. Ya'll's results today were fabo. Courtney, your hair is some of the curliest I have ever seen it.
I love this format! Sisters with different types of hair doing the same styling, the same products shows outcomes for a large variety of hair types. Keep it coming. You both had great wash days! Damp styling all the way.
Just when you think you know all the different methods! Followed this today and loving the results! I have been putting gel on damp hair for a while, but this time I added more water back in, more gel than usual, and lots more scrunching, and it's really made a huge difference to the end result. Thank you for always bringing the goods
I LOVE damp styling on both of you! I love the definition and clumps I get with wet styling, but damp styling saves my hair from taking forever & a half to dry, and from super flat, unfluffable roots. I really enjoyed seeing the comparison between your two hair types as well, even though my hair type is very close to your's, Courtney. I think the comparison can be extremely valuable for coarser-textured viewers and those who are trying to get a larger knowledge base and deeper comprehension of hair types and the effects different products and styling techniques can have on them.
OMG, thank you!!! 👏👏Struggled with my long hair in the last few months and nothing seemed to help. Who knew that all I needed to change was from soaking wet hair to damp hair, so my hair doesn't get weighed down.🤷♀️ My washday today turned out great. Thanks again for this tip. 😊
Ooooh I'll have to try this styling method! I've also found my waves looking weighed down and I wasn't even sure where to start with experimenting in changing little bits of my wash day
I just recently started damp styling (it's technically "wet", but definitely not soaking or dripping and only leaves a bit of wet marks on my shirt) after my stylist did that on me. I was really struggling with over moisturization & over clumping, and my curls were starting about 4 inches from my roots, instead of having at least some texture coming from the root. I don't use heavy products & couldn't figure it out! Turned out the WATER was weighing me down. I finally have my normal, bouncy curls back!
I very much appreciate your comment at the end about people that tend to have stringy waves. I've been fighting this beach hair look for a year and a half, since starting CGM. No one ever talks about this type of hair. We see people like you and think we are doing something wrong. I've tried every frizz free suggestion and my hair dries (even air dries) broken apart into lots of wavy strings. Fortunately beach hair is popular so I gets lots of compliments. But it's a relief to know that this is just how my hair does it. My hair will never look like yours and that's OK. The one thing CGM has done for my hair is I have more hair than when I started! I'm 64 and had lost a lot of hair. I love feeling my healthy thicker hair. Thanks for all your videos and dedication to helping us wavies.
Love the damp styling technique other way is just too much water for me and my hair gets weighed down! Yes I love damp styling on you and your sisters hair more than sooking wet!
Love the results on you both. I've found damp styling works much better for me - my hair is low porosity, thick and coarse. And there's lots of it! I find the definition is better. And yay for the quicker dry time!
How does everyone know their hair type? I just know mine is thick lol I have wavy frizzy hair & just came across these videos today. I try to wear my hair natural but cant NOT comb it after a shower. I need to watch more & learn which products to use but I don’t know my hair type
@@Jezebel066 if it wakes your hair a while to get fully soaked when in the shower, it’s low porosity. If you hold a single strand and can feel it in your fingers, then it’s coarse (one strand of fine hair is barely noticeable). You just have to research and experiment to find out.
The both of you are beautiful! Your hair too!! 😍😍 I think my curl/wave pattern is a similar to your sister one. Please tell us whats her haircut if it's layers or something else.
I started experimenting with damp styling because my curls look busted up after I sleep on them. I was doing almost a damp reset to bring them back to life. Now I damp styling and my curls have more bounce. I love it!
If it squishes, it's still too wet for me. Aunt Jackie's Curl la la is my favorite cause it can actually be used on dry hair. My best hair is 2d day when I apply more on totally dry hair then wet my hands to scrunch sort of like smasters method.
Yessssss love this. I always damp style my 3b 3c course hair. It drys faster I use less product. Having too much water in my hair during styling actually weighs my curls down. Though when I started going curly I followed all your wavy tips. One of them being styling on soaking hair to get my curl clumps etc. It really worked and damp styling did not work at all. Now a year and a half later my hair knows it's curl pattern and is allot healthier. I have learned my hair now loves damp styling. So changing it up throughout your journey really is exciting. I love both your results and like the damp styling results on you both better.
I have fine but dense 3C curls. I've preferred the plopping first for years. I like my curls to be more defined. Also instead of using thick gels that I have to add water to, I use Aveda's Confixor gel. It's more like a thin liquid but gives great hold without making hair crunchy. Both of you gals hair turned out beautifully!!!!
I curl cream, micro pop, then gel. I do not have the patience for “regular” plopping. It works out well if I blow dry for around 15 minutes (also torture). Any less diffusing and it’s weighed down.
Since I started the wavy/curly hair journey, about 10 months ago & trying to figure out what works for me, I've been doing damp styling for the past few weeks & I've been finding out that that works best for me. I have high porosity, thick, course hair. I'm not sure if I understand the porosity thing. I just know that my hair dries fast & tends to be frizzy & I have to use a lot of water & gel. I don't mind the smaller clumps & they do tend to last longer. I style in sections. I do the same thing as you did, add water to my hair & hands. I'm still not getting it right, though, not putting enough gel. I still have to smather some sections. I thought the damp styling looked great on both of you. 👍
I love to see these comparisons. I just tried " plopping" my hair with a hair net for 15 minutes then diffusing. Got a lot I volume but the curls got a bit wonky . I am currently doing damp but will try wet one day since my son's going back to school .
I love damp styling too. I tend to do a wash now style later-- but I'm going to try the plop and then add gel next time. I feel like it takes a lot of time to spray my hair down the next day.

Hi nice to see your sister your hair both look good. I have never yet tried a soaking wet style mine is usually somewhat wet to damp but one day i will try. Sisters hair type looks a lot like mine but mine is shorter.
The Chi gel has easily become my HG during this Florida summer. Every 3-4 wash days I’ll use a different gel that I loved in the past ( I only have 6 different gels) to see how it holds up in 70+ humidity and dew points, and each time I’m disappointed that is doesn’t hold up as well as Chi. It’s also the only gel that gives me a great cast.
Courtney your hair definitely looks more curly this way, but I'm also getting visions of early 2000s scrunching because the clumps are smaller... I haven't tried damp styling because I just started following your tips and tricks. I'm excited to try!
Love both ways of styling on you ladies! I had just started my wavy journey a few months ago after finding your channel, and was experimenting with wet and damp styling though my hair was still in a bit of a transition phase. I got an urge to chop it all off again, which I did 🙈 but I’m so excited to play around with these techniques as it grows back out!
Lovely, precious sisters! 😍✝️😍 So bummed that the Chi Infra Gel (Biosilk Rock Hard Gelee replacement) has the itchy M's which I am unable to tolerate. 😭
Hi Courtney, I love your channel. Do you think you'd be able to review the Hask curl care collection? All the reviews I've found are for curly hair. I want to know how it works on wavy hair
Hi, I loved your method of applying products n got good results too. Thankyou so much ❤️ Kindly suggest n solve my query that I have too much frizzy hair as well as baby hair on my top of head thats become weird on 2nd day after wash that’s why keeping curly hair is very difficult for me. Otherwise curls look awesome on my length of hair so what should I do?
Frizz can be such a struggle! Check out these two videos here. I hope this helps! ua-cam.com/video/9bi2wKzenT8/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/T7x3GKcH8Fc/v-deo.html
Every time I’ve used gel that has protein my hair looks dryer and duller so I’m a little skeptical about the Chi gel. But you two look great. Is it thick and sticky like Harry’s or more runny and slippery?
The chi is basically the same as the biolsilk rock hard gelee. I didn’t like that, it almost over defined my hair, made it stringy. I like Harry’s better for hard hold.
This is almost exactly how I style my hair, except I do half my styling like you usually would using a little curl cream/curl enhancer/custard/mousse on soaking wet hair before plopping, and I don't do the extra microplop after I add gel.
I have never tired damp styling but I really want to try it but really scared because the less water the straighter my hair is but we will see maybe I can send you pics and see what you think?
I think I need to give damp styling another go. my hair is longer now (I need to get my butt to see my stylist and chop some off) so wet styling hasn't been working as well lately.
Your sister has a lot of hair like myself. My hair has gotten very heavy feeling. So heavy sometimes that it gives me headaches. And I don't want to cut it. Can you ask her how does she wears her hair to sleep and how does she wear it up without it weighing a lot? Also when she puts her hair in a loose pineapple, mine flops from side to side being very annoying. Any tips from your sister would be appreciated. Thanks.
Not her sister, but my hair is even longer. It reaches halfway to the small of my back and it's thick and abundant. To avoid headaches when I do hairstyle, I try to avoid putting anything in my hair (no pins, no elastic) with the exception of ribbons for braids. If your hair is long enough, you can wear it in a bun that is held up by your own hair and nothing else. There are tutorial to learn how to do this. Avoiding the extra weight of Bobby pins, hair sticks, and the tight pull of an elastic really helps, plus it saves you some damage to your tresses and it means you can style or loosen your hair anytime.
Plopping is when you wrap your hair up in a towel, like the ones they used in the video. You don't want to use regular towels because that leads to frizz.
Good question! Here are a couple video's where I demonstrate what "plopping" is. 😀 ua-cam.com/video/XZrXP5HlG0I/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/snGMnkdviTI/v-deo.html

I think both damp and wet are beautiful! I usually damp style and air dry cause i am lazy, but the few times i wet style i have more defined curls.
I recently did a slightly more damp styling than normal and I has soooo much volume! I really want to experiment with it more.
Ohh I’m excited to try this!!!
Go for it! Have fun with it!
Hi Courtney, I love your channel. Do you think you'd be able to review the Hask curl care collection? All the reviews I've found are for curly hair. I want to know how it works on wavy hair
I love the results. Your curls looks amazing
Thank you! 🥰

Thankyou for reply Courtney 😍
I stay in India so can’t get these products 😦
Love the sister bond💕
Thank you! We are so blessed to have the relationship we have!
I do a combo of soaking wet styling and damp styling, in case microplopping removes sonne product.
Might have to try damp styling now.
My hair gets frizzy after scrunched out the crunch. What do you think I'm missing?
Your day 2-3 hair looks better than my 1st day hair 😫. Beautiful sisters.
Love damp styling! On me as well as on you girls 💕
Courtney any suggestions for a mousse that is fragrance free or that has very little fragrance.
I prefer damp styling, plus don't really plop much, but I have very curly hair, so follow these tips to help my curls look more defined and less frizz
This is almost exactly how I style my hair, except I do half my styling like you usually would using a little curl cream/curl enhancer/custard/mousse on soaking wet hair before plopping, and I don't do the extra microplop after I add gel.
Nice!! Makes sense! 😀😀
Can you try damp styling with products that you didn't think worked well on soaking wet hair?
You both have gorgeous hair.
Definitely, give it a try! Less water may help it to not weigh down.
Gonna try this method on my wavy hair, normally I style on soaking wet hair
Let us know how it turns out! 😀
Does this cause frizz? I always gets frizz after plopping.

Ok. Thanks. I will try that.
Your hair looks amazing wet style.
Thank you so much!
Damp styling is the way to go if you have coarse, heavy, low porosity hair like mine. :)
Gorgeous!
Thank you Leysa! So sweet! 😀
Damp styling works best for me.
It is amazing when you find what works best for you! 🥰
The way you have litterly 0 frizz!!! 😭😭😭 HOW!?
What is plopping?
Plopping is when you wrap your hair up in a towel, like the ones they used in the video. You don't want to use regular towels because that leads to frizz.
Good question! Here are a couple video's where I demonstrate what "plopping" is. 😀
