«Dazzling! Fantastic!» -- these are typical reactions to performances by the Ossipov Balalaika Orchestra. One reviewer wrote: «A kind of musical tsunami swept over the hall, everything was immersed in the Russian melodies, deep and wide like an ocean. I simply cannot find the words! I was sobbing like a baby. It was wonderful!»
This recording features original large-scale works and arrangements for balalaika orchestra by Russian composers Rodion Shchedrin, Evgeny Svetlanov, Tikhon Khrennikov, Vera Gorodovskaya and Pavel Kulikov. The spirit and melodies of Russian folk music blends with the passion and power of symphonic expression in these compositions. The unique colors of the various folk instruments are not merely amplified but take on new shades and dimensions in the symphonic formation of the Ossipov Orchestra.
The Ossipov Balalaika Orchestra was founded in 1919. The ensemble's premiere performance took place in Moscow's Hermitage Gardens and the orchestra was soon known in even the most remote parts of the country. A new stage in the orchestra's history began when Nikolai Ossipov took over in 1940. The orchestra's repertoire was enlarged by arrangements of Russian classical music, and leading composers such as N. Budashkin, A. Novikov and A. Kholminov soon followed by writing works especially for the orchestra. The orchestra itself was enlarged to include other instruments, including kugilkas, bayans, zhaleikas, brijolkas, percussion instruments, etc.
The Ossipov Balalaika Orchestra represents a beautiful living document of a long history of traditional Russian folk instruments and their music.

As a child living in New York City, I can remember going to a concert in Central Park. At that concert there was THE RUSSIAN BALALAIKA ORCHESTRA performing. It was such beautiful music. Of course they had their families with them. I made a whole lot of Russian Friends. We still keep in contact. Now that was when Russia was The Soviet Union.

Love it. Russian folk music is mind blowing. Had the Mercry Osipov orchestra recording in the 60's. All good. Спасибо!

Since my youth I was interested in East European music. Predominantly Russian/Ukranian and Polish folk music (Mazowse). It is great music and this song I have on a Melodia (vinyl) EP record with Vitaly Gnutov. The Russian culture and music deserves more attention because it is really beautiful.

I had an EP record with these numbers. It must have been recorded in the 50s and Valery Gnutov was the conductor. The label on the record was in Russian. I bought it in a shop in Amsterdam in the early sixties and from that time I really like the orchestra and Russian folkmusic in general. Great orchestra, like this recording too.

I really enjoyed this. It was for me a true experience of the synthesis of Oriental and Occidental that is Russian culture.

Interesting. I have a CD with this piece as the third track. The translation of the title is "Under the Linden Tree" (as opposed to "The Ancient Linden Tree"). The CD is "Balaika Favorites", Mercury Living Presence label, Osipov State Russian Folk Orchestra, Vitaly Gnutov, conductor. The CD I have was recorded in 1960 with Valerie . Rudolph Beloved was the domra soloist on the Fantasy on Two Folk Songs by Budashkin.
