You have taught me so much. My wife doesn't cook, I would've starved if it wasn't for you. I appreciate you so much.

Boricua here from a 100% PR family and my mom has never been very helpful in teaching me to cook. We made pasteles last year (which were amazing) but they took us 8 hours to cook because she kept walking away from me 🙄 You've taught me so much already, Ida! Thank you for all of your recipes and helping me cook like a real boricua 🇵🇷

Man we’re all family at the end of the day, I’m tearing up cus my grandma is way too old to even make these anymore and none of us kept up to tradition. She’d have the super sized pots all on the table laid out ready and I’d just watch this 5ft nothing super woman full of attitude make like a million of these lol at least that’s what it felt like. It’s Little things u learn to appreciate as u get older.

An African American, I was introduced to pasteles by my best friend's (and later comadre) mother. Both have passed since then, but my addiction to pasteles at holiday time remains. Thanks for the memories. I can smell them through the screen, LOL.

Your right about each family member having a specific task. 25 years later my chore is still cutting the string. 😏

Thank you for this recipe. I am from NY but been living in London for 11 years. I miss Puerto Rican food and I made this today and it came out awesome!

I teared at the end of your message.. I grew up learning and making pasteles with my mom.. and she past away .. you say pasteles reminds you of Christmas and it reminds me of my mom... I was touched with your message.. I think making pasteles is a intimate dish.. prepared with a individual true background meaning and most of all made with love.. thank you for making this video.

my Suegra made this one thanksgiving for me and my esposo, but she never showed me how she made it. Now I know how. Im probably going to make some for Easter Holiday.

  • @mariaelena2132

My aunt who passed away in 2021 taught us how to make these one Christmas. She made a joke one…it was vegetarian, no pork and my dad got it and complained 😂😂. I don’t have a big family it’s just me and the hubs but I work in a school in Hawaii so I’m thinking about making a big batch for the staff Christmas party. In Hawaii there are lots of variations on this recipe, for instance a local Salvadoran family make a version they call tamale but it’s nothing like a Mexican tamale the masa is definitely banana squash & taro. I try to explain this to people but they don’t understand. They just know it’s delicious. There is lots of PR influence in the cooking here because sugar plantation workers came here in 1900 and began raising families and never left. ❤

I made this for my family. My mom and step dad are from Puerto Rico. They were blown away and couldn't believe I made them. They said I've earned my boriqua card. I even made some vegan for my sister. Thank you so much for teaching me. I'm making them again this year and every year.

My MIL is Puerto Rican and she introduced me to so much authentic Puerto Rican cuisine. I remember the first time that I saw a pastele and I was like, “unh unh, I don’t think so.” But when I put this in my mouth a spectacular explosion occurred. I have been in love with these since the early 90’s when my daughter was born. There is nothing on the planet like these. I miss them and seeing this makes me want them even more. Thank you for sharing your recipe with us. I hope that the Island and the people are recovering since the hurricanes. Much love I have for the Puerto RIcan people many times over. Puerto Rico/Puerto Ricans will always have a special place in my heart forever!

Thank you so, SO much for making Spanish and English versions!! As a Puerto Rican who grew up on the mainland and is not fully fluent in Spanish, it is so helpful to be able to follow along confidently!

Thank you for proving that we don't have to skin our knuckles grinding the vianda with a grater or buy a fancy machine. Love it!
