- The Cobra Manoeuvre, also known as Pugachev's Cobra or Pugachev Cobra is a very spectacular, dramatic and demanding aerobatics manoeuvre in which an aircraft flew at a moderate speed suddenly raises its nose to the vertical position - and beyond - before dropping the nose back to horizontal flight. The aircraft reaches 90-120° angle of attack during the Cobra.
The Cobra manoeuvre is named after the Soviet test pilot Viktor Pugachyov, who first performed the Cobra manoeuvre publicly in 1989 at the Paris Le Bourget air show, and shocked the Western spectators who couldn't believe it. The Soviet Union still existed at this time. However, the Cobra was first executed by Sukhoi test-pilot Igor Volk in a test flight. The classic Cobra was done using only standard aerodynamic controls. Today it is easier to be done with Vector Thrust.
The Cobra requires very potent engines to maintain approximately a constant altitude throughout the Cobra. It has some use in close range aerial combat or dogfight - so the hunted can become a hunter by getting behind the enemy aircraft. The Cobra can be useful when a fighter jet is being pursued closely by an opponent fighter jet. By executing the Cobra manoeuvre, a pursued fighter jet may suddenly slow down to the point where the enemy aircraft may overshoot it. The aircraft is now behind and pursuing and can theoretically fire its weapons. The disadvantage is that the aircraft doing the Cobra loses a lot of speed, which makes it vulnerable.
And it is a very impressive single demonstration flight aerobatics manoeuvre to show pilot's skills and the aircraft maneuvrability at airshows. If you have ever seen it for example at MAKS airshow in Zhukovsky near Moscow - and the reaction of the spectators - you know how popular it is. It is the perfect manoeuvre to show the pilot's skills and demonstrate an aircraft's high angle of attack (AOA) stability, the pitch control authority as well as engine-versus-inlet compatibility.
Nowadays the Cobra can be achieved more easily with the so-called "supermaneuverability" thanks to thrust vectoring in 4.5 and 5th-generation fighter jets.
What makes this more impressive is that pilot is also playing drums and guitar same time.

Saw a mig 29 do this during the Gorbachev years at an airshow in Ottawa canada A group of american pilots and groundcrew were completely silent for a full minute afterwards.
I doubt they were really that impressed. Anyone that knows anything about aviation know that dogfights occur at longer ranges. They are not doing some damn tight formation dogfight. Plus, the pilots would know that the missiles and possibly a fuel tank strapped to the bottom of the jet would screw up the aerodynamics, and make the aircraft heavier, rendering it useless when trying to preform this maneuver. This is an airshow stunt only.

Russian Air Force in Ukraine) which led several of us on the hunt to understand it. That led me to an article titled titled "How many Gs is a cobra maneuver?" by Haiden Heath on 8/16/20 which included this video. Just wild to see!

Pugachev's cobra originate from the cobra maneuver which originated in the Swedish Airforce in the 50s/60s with the draken superstall training performed in front of Warsaw pact pilots.

It is true that the Chinese version of the MiG-29 can perform this maneuver. It is widely known as "General Tso's Cobra". However, NATO leaders discourage pilots from performing this maneuver in the Chinese copycat MiG-29, as the jet is likely to fall apart, as it is made from cheap parts. Also, the warranty does not cover manufacturer defects.

I can’t imagine there is much likelihood with today’s super high tech jets that you are going to have many fighters that are going to be physically close enough to their opponent to make use of such a maneuver. Do not the vast majority of air to air combat situations presently take place with the pilots not even within sight of each other?
Flight training, yes. But would this ever occur in real combat against US fighters? If the planes were close to equal, our fighters would standoff at a distance, using long-range missiles to down the opponents. They would only close for near combat when the US jets have a definite advantage. In the Gulf of Sidra incident,, the F-14 had a clear advantage. After they were attacked, they used their close-range Sidewinder missiles to shoot down the Sukhoi Su-17, while they could have easily blasted them with the long-range and more expensive Phoenix missiles. All things being fair, maybe the Russian plane could use this maneuver, but you don't fight fair in a dog fight.
@@stevesheets8653 Against planes such as the F-22 or F-35 the likelihood of getting into a WVR merge is basically zero, but in a newer 4th gen plane the likelihood goes up do to the lack of an ability to control the engagement the same way stealth planes do. Also there is still a chance during QRA intercepts that the aircraft could engage in WVR combat. although with high off boresight missiles such as the AIM-9X or R-73 Archer the fight would likely be very short.

Question for you, in the case of a quick reaction, and closing to visual range, would the average US pilot know enough not to put themselves in the position when the opponent could pull off, what is basically an air brake maneuver, against them? There are just so many IFs involved, I doubt the importance of training for this maneuver in combat situation, other than to teach a pilot precision flying.

The SU 37 truly is an amazing aircraft. What's little known though is a man named Igor Volk. Couple the man who is regarded anywhere as one of the best test pilots ever, and the SU 37 and magical things happen.

I don't speak for a particular side and am no aircraft expert, I just find beauty in fighter aircraft but many Western planes fight BVR and that maneuver is useless in that case but the skill behind it and the beauty is just amazing!

I’ve always thought that this maneuver would be incredibly risky. As soon as you start to go vertical, you’d just expose literally the largest cross section that you could actually expose. It’d be like trying to shoot the edge of a piece of paper. It’d be damn near impossible. But if you shoot it from the front - it presents a much larger target.

When the pilot initiates this maneuver the plane climbs steeply and slows down before it stalls and the wings act as massive airbrakes. This alone puts it out of range of a missile as the missile cannot change direction so quickly. However if the pilot reacts to slowly he's a sitting duck for any gun.

There's a reason very few Jets can do this, because the engineering of the actual plane has been designed this way. Everything the a craft does is based upon the engineering and design of it... Several decades before Pugachev showed off his cobra, in the early 1960s, the maneuver was performed by Swedish pilots who flew Saab 35 fighter jets. It was invented during training on how to recover from super booths (also known as deep booths) that the dual delta-tailless design on the Saab 35 tends to. The first Swedish pilots to discover Cobra were the test pilots Bengt Olow [sv] and Ceylon Utterborn [sv], who developed or invented the technology around 1961-1963.

That is why I love the Sukhoi.
It was in 1985 that I saw a Sukhoi 27 at the Melbourne International Air Show climb vertically and stop. From the ground it looked like it stopped completely, pointing upwards and then it began to fall down, still vertical for a while and it began to tumble. The pilot seemed to have lost complete control of the aircraft. It fell towards the ground then suddenly roared off again and almost disappeared from view. Whether that sort of manoeuvre has any benefit in a combat situation I have no idea, but it was spectacular.
My understanding: In long range engagements (what NATO designs tend to focuss on) speed is king, throw your missiles farther, force the enemy's to chase farther. But in short range manuverability is king. First "Cobra Manoeuvre" I saw was an EE Lightning display back in the 60s at low level. Came across the field, stood it on its tail, set fire to the grass, then brought the nose down and resumed level flight

To stall an aircraft would have to have wings. The Lightning does not have wings, instead it has pylons to keep the nav lights apart.
