Hi, Carl. I wanted to let you know that your video helped make the decision about which vacuum chuck setup to go with. I went through your friends at Chefware Kits and could be more thrilled with the performance thus far. The only thing I did different was I went with a vacuum pump that did not require a compressor. Thanks for helping me decide which direction to go. Really appreciated this video!

Hi Carl, I have the older model venturi from hold fast (V810R), but I was never able to get it to work that well. I think the problem may have been that I was using one of those little AC 2.5 CFM air compressor pumps. I am trying to decide whether to stick with the venturi I have or invest in a frugal vacuum pump. Here's my question - when you have it hooked up to your air compressor, how often does your air compressor turn on when you're using it, to keep the pressure up? Also relevant, what PSI do you keep your air compressor at and how big is yours. I have a 10 gallon compressor and I don't think I'd like it if it was turning on every five minutes that I used the vacuum chuck. Thanks for all your great videos!

Carl, apart from natural edge and small items, I find it easier to use a large home made platter style chuck (around 16"). You gain a great deal more surface area and pressure it required. the platter is covered in funky foam which helps compensate for any uneven edges.

I don't own a vacuum chuck yet, but one tip would be to use the largest vacuum chuck which fits the piece you're working on - the holding strength is based on the area you're holding (pounds per square inch for example) so you want the holding area to be as large as possible.

I watched your videos on the hold fast vacuum system. I then purchased the system. When I set it up, I can only get 6” Hg. My husky compressor has 3.7 CFM at 90 psi so that should not be the problem. I have tried a couple of different hoses to know avail. Do you have any suggestions for how to get up to the minimum 12” Hg? When I watched your video, you could tug pretty hard when the system was running. It’s not hard for me to pull a platter off at 6” Hg. Any insight would be appreciated. I thought I would reach out to you before returning the system.

Hi Mark, I'm not sure what's going on I have a regulator just before my Holdfast system and I turn it down to about 27lb of pressure. That should be plenty to hold just about anything on. The only thing I can think is if there's voids in the wood that will let the air leak.

H'mmm, so you don't just insert the Robust vacuum adapter into the hand wheel hole and then attach the Hold Fast vacuum chuck to the head-stock spindle? It looks like the Robust Vacuum adapter has O-rings to seal so why is the Hold Fast tube and cap needed on the end of the spindle? When you thread on the Hold Fast chuck would that not close the system and allow the vacuum pump to do the rest? Please advise what I might be overlooking. Thanks, Myles

If I'm not mistaken, you put the bowl in there with the shavings and it helps let the bowl dry without cracking. It slows out the dry time.

I overlay the seal with plastic to keep from leaving a mark on the finished inside of the bowl.

Carl. I noticed you use the same vacuum set up for stabilizing wood. Zac uses a electric pump. What is the difference in the two? I want to get into stabilization

I not sure what the difference is you might ask Zac. I've only used this one.

For anyone who orders this system and has the Laguna Revo 18/36, know you will need to purchase a longer length of lamp tube and cut to length. It works great on that lathe with that modification. It comes with a 18' tube and the Revo needs 19-20"

Hey Carl do you know if anyone has parts to this system, specifically the small tip with o-ring that threads on the other end of the head stock to seal the vacuum. Can't seem to find info anywhere, Thanks, Mike
